One of the highlights of my lifelong love affair with the cinema was speaking with D.A. at the 2016 Virginia Film Festival. The man was warmth & cool, defined. I cherish (and own physical media of) all his available films. Montery Pop is as fresh, urgent and potent today as the three days over which it was filmed 56 years ago.

Ive been watching the Monterey pop movie for years and years and could never figure out what that opening song was but knew it was Janis and Big Brother. As the internet got bigger and better finally I found it but not this version which is in the beginning of the movie. Just yesterday I finally found this and it means so much to me. Such a fans of all the Pennebaker films. Amazing!
I saw them do this live at State University of New York at Stony Brook - and it was awesome. An astonishing line up - John Hammond Trio, Taj Mahal, Richie Havens and JJ/Big Brother & the Holding Company. For five bucks. I was in the third row and the smell of Southern Comfort was unavoidable. Janis was amazing, but heading for disaster.

A cool, little mind-blower for me is that descending falsetto vocal Janis does at the cadence of the song, and note perfect. I think it's JS Bach, but not positive. That just throws a wonderful monkey wrench into the raw, ragged rock!

@@starwarscollectioncarbajal8071 Janis had issues with drugs prior to fame. 2-3 years prior to this, she was on a downward spiral in San Fransisco, doing drugs, drinking heavily and even got arrested for shoplifting. She moved back home and got clean but then started using hard drugs again when fame kicked in.

Mont Pop was sort of the beginning of mainstream hippie era while Woodstock was the peak and end of the era. Woodstock was also famous for the fact that many thought it would just be another music festival a second rate Mont Pop when in fact it blew everyone's expectations and drew crowds of almost half a million people, something that organizers nor acts ever predicted.

BB&HC came back on Sunday to perform (and film) two songs, after the huge success of their previous day performance that went uncovered due to financial reasons. "Combination of the two" and "Ball and chain" were the two songs performed and filmed on Sunday June 18. In their place i would pick two songs with Janis on lead vocals, no offense Sam but this was her moment in history. Glad "ball and chain" performance still amazes the world

Went into Hartford and bought the tickets, then lost them on the way home. My friend and I were just scrawny little 8th grade boys, but thankfully we had remembered the seat numbers. My father dropped us off for the concert, and the very "classical looking" usher listened to our story. He took us to where our seats were and we waited until everybody had come in. When he realized that the seats we had told him about had stayed empty, he just nicely let us have them. Score one for the bridging the generation gap that night. Janis was predictably amazing .... absolutely amazing, but the entire BB&HC band was also extremely polished and wonderful. Much more polished than this performance. A very good, tightly rehearsed group! I was sorry that she went out on her own. There is really nothing that seems to touch that "Cheap Thrills" album, (even though my mother almost made me throw it out when she saw that R.Crumb cover. LOL!

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, and a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers... and also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of Budweiser, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls. Not that we needed all that for the trip, but once you get locked into a serious drug collection, the tendency is to push it as far as you can.
