Kris Kristofferson was a Rhodes Scholar who studied at Oxford University. That was his poetry. He's no lightweight intellectually.

He also wrote "Help Me Make It Through The Night" which was originally recorded by Country singer Sammi Smith, however, Gladys Knight's cover will blow your socks off. It sounds nothing like a country ballad when Gladys sings it with a little soul.

JANIS JOPLIN WITHOUT DEPTH?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! That's the goofiest thing I ever heard! You aren't listening to the right song! The Queen of Rock N Roll!!! You can't stop with Me & Bobby McGee! Janis Joplin without depth .... my goodness

Great reaction, albeit from a perspective of not understanding the context. No offense implied. It's the same idea you spoke about in the Saxon reaction - basically, if you'd been able to experience it when it happened you'd appreciate it more. Kris Kristofferson is one of the greatest songwriters. Janis did this cover at a time when Bob Dylan had just made people realize that music didn't require perfect musicians or singers. Kris K didn't write it for Janis. A bunch of artists had already recorded the song by the time Janis did it, including Kris himself. When he heard Janis' recording, Kris said it was his favorite and that this was what he had imagined the song to sound like. Janis was in the wave of artists benefiting from Dylan making music more about meaning and feeling. So at the time, this recording was almost revolutionary. Janis was never about her vocal ability, but about her energy, rawness, and emotion. This recording was the voice of a generation for reasons that transcend musical ability. It was the combination of songwriting and sheer emotion that spoke for a whole lot of people who wanted to be heard, even if for no other reason than to simply be heard.
@joeandbennyadventures94886 жыл бұрын
Very well said AreaMan920. Hit it right on the nail. There was a interview with Ken Kesey at the end of a documentary about the dedicate fans of the Grateful Dead. Ken put it best starting at: 3:49 in the below video, when he talks about the fans would listen to 5 hours of mediocre music just to experience that 1 moment. That crack. kzbin.info/www/bejne/ep2cmHyQar6lq7s

@robinaddis-vaughn72716 жыл бұрын
And, she really stripped it down to what music is supposed to do, touch your soul. She became "possessed" when she performed. She wasn't into stage theatrics. Sadly, if she came along today, she'd never make it because she didn't "look" the part. She's not a Christina Aguilera, Qwen Stefani, etc. She could hang with the guys and partied (too much, sadly) the movie "The Rose" is supposedly based loosely on Joplin's life. Whether it is or isn't, watch it. Bette Midler is phenomenal in that role. Thanks guys. Much love and PEACE OUT ✌. I'm 53, so just a wannabe hippy!

Wait a minute. The voice of Janis Joplin doesn't have *depth* on this song?! I'm sorry, I love this channel so much, but I have to seriously disagree with y'all on that one point! Some of the greatest, most soulful singers' voices "crack" during performances that are absolutely incredible! That is actually part of the *soul* in those performances-- the singers are so into it, feeling what they are singing so deeply, that their voices can crack, and they don't care about it, and not only does it not negatively affect the performances, it actually *enhances* them. One of the best examples of this is Merry Clayton's searing vocal attack in the Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter."

That fusion of Country and Soul was really nice and the way the tempo transitioned into a bit faster one later into the song reminded me of Tina Turner Proud Mary and how that song started slow and then proceeded to build up and up and up. The writing was well done and for Janis to really project that feeling on the track was executed to the T. Helluva nice reaction to this country joint Lost In Vegas.

imma NEVER watch these two again . Janis Joplin " doesn't have a lot of depth" !!!!!! ????? are you freakin kidding me !!??? NINA SIMONE from the stage said Janis was the ONLY ONE who "gets it" the way she ( nina ) does. Areatha loved her, i mean I'm not even gonna dignify this bulls*** with a comment. man you two need to get your ears checked. and while your at it see if you have ANY heart/soul in there too.

This song doesnt do Janis any justice...and it's my least favorite of her songs...I've always felt as though it was just "filler" for the album... Please, review "Cry Baby."

She was pretty heavy into her drug use at the time too. Listen to Pink's cover. She's the only one that can truly do justice to Janis Joplin but she has the depth and range in her voice that y'all were talking about. As far as Kris Kristofferson goes, there's nothing he hasn't done. He tried to get noticed by Johnny Cash and couldn't so one day he landed on Johnny & June's property up beside their cabin and he gave Johnny a cassette tape of songs. He and Willie are the only 2 Highway Men left, I think. There's a great clip of him and Barbara Striesand from the movie "A Star is Born". There are a lot of clips, but this one is just her playing piano and he's singing her song.

Melissa Etheridge also did a great cover piece of my heart. The only two singers that do Janis Justice.

Robin Addis-Vaughn couldn’t agree more!! Pink’s version is awesome!!
@troyhagen98436 жыл бұрын
I agree about Pink's version being great. Brandi Carlile also does a fantastic cover of it. Kris Kristofferson actually starred in one of Brandi's videos for her song "That Wasn't Me", sang "Turpentine" on her tribute album and stated that he really hasn't gotten into someone else's music like he has Brandi's since Janis and that he thinks Brandi may be an even better singer. She's also known for her voice cracking like it does on "The Story".

Margo Price's version she does at her live shows is the only one who even coming close to touching Janis' rendition IMO. I was blown away when she closed with it last summer.

@@troyhagen9843 Brandi can emote ! Turpentine and The Story always make me cry. She is good friends with fellow musicians The Avett Brothers (who are amazing and wonderful human beings as well as musicians and songwriters). She even commissioned Scott Avett to paint her portrait for her most recent album. The co- founder of, and elder brother in, The Avett Brothers, he is also an accomplished visual fine artist. For depth, I suggest No Hard Feelings (which LiV reacted to and that is how I found them !) and Through My Prayers. Their songwriting is lovely and I have called them Modern Day Renaissance Men since becoming a fan about 10 years ago ...

I think "harpoon" is meant to get the word "harp" to fit the line. "harp" was another word for harmonica, which the character plays softly while Bobby sings. Don't think you can play a heroin needle softly.

Ryan and George great reaction! Yeah Janis is a acquired taste, but nonetheless she has soul. Sometimes people get caught up in the technical skills of a singer and miss out on the true talent of their voice. Which comes to mind some other female singers that you might want to indulge into. Ann Wilson (Heart), Bonnie Riatt, Amy Lee ( Evanescence), Door Pesch, Sandy Saraya (Saraya) just to name a few. Well with that being said I would like to put in my request as always for your help to Ultraphonix Ultraphonix Ultraphonix Ultraphonix Ultraphonix Ultraphonix a collaboration between George Lynch guitar (Dokken) and Corey Glover vocal (Living Colour) the songs "Crawl Walk Run" or "Counture Culture" featuring Dug Pinnick from Kings X. Corey Glover's solo release Hymns the songs "April Rain" or "One" Living Colour's "Open Letter to a Landlord" or maybe Kings X "Over My Head" and on the country side Dwight Yoakam's "Thousand miles from nowhere", "Guitars and Cadillacs" or "Fast as you" would be cool as hell! Thinking of Janis another fellow Texan artist and song writer you should check out is Ian Moore particularly the song "Satisfied" off his self titled album, by the way in my humble opinion that whole album rocks. Keep on rockin' peace ☮️ ✌️!!
