Even now, before the Olympics and no matter what happens there, she is one of the GOATs not only in climbing, but in sports altogether. She is the Michael Jordan, Wayne Gretzky, Tiger Woods, Simone Biles of climbing. Once she has retired, we will most likely never see a similarly dominant climber in the competitive scene. She is a generational talent. She needs more recognition outside of the climbing community.

What really impresses me about Janja is not just her climbing ability. She is so strong mentally. Her mental focus is phenomenal. Her English language skills are also awesome. I think she's maybe the most impressive sportsperson I've seen.

In my experience, when you look past football, basketball, tennis, etc. you find a lot of wonderful people. Yes, they also exist in mainstream commercial sports, but other sports are better at supporting wonderful people, because they are less of a business.

@@nilsp9426 I don't like pushing down other sports to push another one up, but there is something about sports like climbing, snowboarding, mountainbiking and other individual/ extreme sports where the competitors seem actually happy when their opponents do well.
@DeinSponsor2 ай бұрын
@@nilsp9426 it's because in fully commercialised and industrialised sports athletes don't do anything else from a very young age already. In football you don't do anything else than just playing/training football at teen age, and you already get well paid. In Olympic sports it's different, usually athletes still have a regular life. If you watch interviews of footballers and olympic athletes you can see and hear the difference.

Janja never ceases to make me tear up. The only thing more exceptional than her sporting ability is her humility. I've tried to listen to all her post-victory interviews over the years - no stock responses, just straight from the heart and you need only see how emotionally she celebrates EVERY victory to know how true her words are. We'd all be so lucky to have that depth of enthusiasm for something. ❤

nah, its more that a lot of people are nationalistic, or genderistic or workeristic... i am a man or a woman or i work there or my nationality is this... every french athlete that qualified to the olympics feels a lot of pressure to perform for their country because every french is nationalistic... that's what she's saying... that she is a human being, that were all, first, before gender or borders, humans. We all have rights, we all have hopes, we all have weaknesses. Some, a lot of people ... don't understand that. Especially those that never traveled... what it means to be a human being.

Great interview with such an amazing athlete and person. The body image thing for young females is terrible but so ingrained into our society (just check out the proportions and shape of a barbie doll). As a father of 2 daughters who were pretty sporty growing up, both girls had times where they had to deal with some nasty comments regarding muscles and body shape. It's so important that people like Janja speak up and what a role model! With the comment around snakes and spiders I'm guessing we won't see Janja climbing here in Aus any time soon...

I found IFSC WCs 2-3 years before Janja exploded onto the scene - Coxley, Akiyo & a young Miho seemed the 3 to beat every comp - but almost immediately young Garnbret joined them as favorites to podium, then soon thereafter simply the most likely to win top spot. Now, she's become a great champion while still maintaining her feminine (there I said it) appeal - calm confidence on the wall and yet, exuburant relief & smiling waves to the crowd after each winning top. Janja truly is one of the greatest female athletes - not just sport climbers - I've ever seen, many years enjoying many different sports. Tho certainly a strong Olympic group of women, I expect her to repeat Olympic Gold and then become ambassador of the sport - and successful too, in any other endeavors she finds interesting & challenging. Bravo Janja! and T/Y this YT.
