Painting Distant Mountains with acrylics using alla prima techniques

I think I could watch you paint landscapes forever! This is a beautiful impressionistic painting with many hills,valleys, and mountains. There is no limit to your imagination so you can work in whatever you envision on your painting journey. I like the way you add the sky holes and then open up the tree as you go along adding color contrasts. It looked like a small pathway in back of the tree winding around the corner. The mountains painted into the clouds add alot to your interesting painting!

I like the sew out on your jacket. That is a smart idea of having your company logo stitched on instead of going the cheaper route. It would hold up more and last longer with repeated washing! I love those distant mountains, especially how you mix several different colors that achieve grey. I used too think it was only made up by mixing black and white!

Dave, I watched the whole thing , and you kept me intensely following you in my mind. Painting is not what I've ever done, but you showed us so much I feel like I could.. Some of the alla prima can. It depends on the technique I use. I like to use a lot of "pure" acrylic techniques where I let the layers dry. This one however I used alla prima so you can do it with oils.

I change the techniques I use slightly when painting on canvas because of the weave. I don't use paper unless I am painting watercolor.

Question: you switch between extender and open medium. Do they both do same thing? Why the switch and what makes that determination?

They have different "feel" and power in the painting. I use Extender to slow down and thin the paint to reduce the power of the color mark. Open medium is sticky and thicker so it gives the color more power being thicker. Thicker paint has more power. So power equals open medium and thin touches of color equals extender.
