The 32 minutes was more than enough time for the passengers to realize that they were going to crash. Many chose to write their last messages on paper/air sickness bags. Once written they'd either put it in their pockets or in the seat in front. Some notes were found in good condition while some were covered in blood stains. Here's what one of the messages said: Mariko, Tsuyoshi, Chiyoko, Be good to each other and work hard. Help your mother. It’s sad, but I’m sure I won’t make it. I don’t know the cause. It’s been five minutes now. I don’t want to take any more planes. Please kami-sama help me. To think that our dinner last night was the last time. There was some sort of explosion in the cabin There was smoke and we started to descend Where are we going, what will happen? Tsuyoshi , I’m counting on you Darling, it’s too bad that this has happened. Goodbye Please take good care of the children It’s 6:30 now. The plane is turning around and descending rapidly. I am grateful for the truly happy life I have enjoyed until now.

Fun fact:in simulators replicating the crash,no one else could keep it up as long as the actual pilots could,even to the best of their ability. The pilots that kept this for 32 MINUTES were amazing at their job.

Imagine this, people visiting relatives, going or returning from vacation, not expecting this to happen. It must be heartbreaking for the families, even though they compensate it with money. Nothing can fix the sadness of losing a loved one. Hats off to the pilots for keeping this plane in the air for as long as they could, trying their hardest to save the passengers. Rip everyone on board, except for the lucky few who survived. Must’ve been such a traumatic experience, knowing they were the only survivors.

But the plane had lost its Hydraulic Fluids, which makes the plane stabilized, they tried to apply the maximum power of the 747SR-46, but they set the Landing Gear Down to land... which affects the speed they need, the plane crashed in Mount. Takamagahara. 520 Passengers, 15 Crews and 3 Officers in the Cockpit, died, but 4 Survivors survived the crash, 2 Kids and 2 Adults. It's still the worst "Single Aircraft Accident involving the BOEING 747SR-46"*

The more survivors there are, the less serious the impact there is. This was a Boeing 747 that lost its vertical stabilizer and lost its hydraulics while in flight. Over mountains. The fact that there were 4 survivors is testament to how good of pilots they were.

Would a rear facing camera alert the crew to necessary actions to find a safer place to ditch? I know in 1985 CCTV would have been bulky and expensive to operate. Could moderating thrust help them stay in the air longer?

It wouldn't have helped. The airframe experienced a tail strike on a previous flight. The repair on the aft pressure bulkhead failed, and the resulting explosive decompression severed the aircraft hydraulics. Without flight controls and most of the vertical stabilizer, the aircraft entered into a phugoid cycle. That is the up and down flight path shown in the video. Trying to overcome these oscillations demanded 100% of the pilots' attention and never gave them the stability needed to try and steer with differential thrust. It was only a matter of time until mountainous terrain met up with the descent portion of the phugoid.

Even amid the chaos and knowledge that they were probably going to crash, the main concern of the flight attendants remained with the safety of the passengers as evidenced by the blackbox recordings and by a photo a passenger took during the last minutes before the crash.
