Did you know that there are very few compact SUVs sold in North America that are still built in Japan? Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross is one of them - being built at Mitsubishi's Okazaki factory where David has visited a number of times. And because of that origin, this compact SUV/Crossover feels quite different from other competitors' models - delivering a bit of "old fashioned Japanese" feel. Its main competitive models such as the Toyota Corolla Cross, Mazda CX-50, Nissan Rogue, and Honda CR-V are all built in North America. Anyhow, does the origin of manufacturing makes this vehicle a stand out model? Watch David's full review to find out...

I wish Honda went back to producing full size sedans assembled back in Japan. I just returned from a 25 day trip to Asia Pacific. My final transit through Tokyo the morning I was due to return back to LAX, I sat in JAL Lounge in Haneda and was the first person in for the day. I sat astonished, watching one of the attendance cleaning all the tables with diligence, I have not seen in a long time in America. This lady cleaned every horizontal surface in the entire lounge with everything she had and I was very impressed. If I had 10 of her back in the US, I would dominate my market. I complemented her on her work ethic and she looked at me curiously. She humbly said back to me,”It is my duty.”

1. Please don’t romanticize foreign countries. I have lived all over East Asia for many years. That’s one thing residents can’t stand foreigners doing 2. You should remove the part where you say “if I had ten of her” .. that’s essentially slavery. They don’t want to be yours. 3. I think you meant to write “attendants”

Very encouraging report. I now need to rethink the CX50, CX5, and add the Mitsubishi Eclipse to my wish list. It will take a lot of doing before I replace my 2015 Camry or my 2018 Avalon, however.. I really enjoy having CD player in my car and I have that with my Toyotas.

I’m a big Mitsubishi fan. Four of them in my family since 2012. Over 250k flawless miles with zero factory defects. Averaged 26 mpg city and 32 mpg hwy. resale value not so hot so I advise long term ownership to justify buying. Also, the 4wd system is awesome in the snow.

I was at a Mitsubishi dealership recently: Even in person I could barely tell their models apart. Every thing they make looks nearly identical. I didn't know which was their top tier SUV and which was their entry level one. They all look alike.

I’ve owned 2 Mitsubishis over the years. Both had zero problems, except they both used oil. And I’m meticulous about oil changes. None of my other vehicles ever used oil except a Saturn & a 3.6 Outback. Wonder if the newer Mitsubishis have better gas rings?

Thank you, David. And I couldn't agree more about Mitsubishi and quality because once I knew someone with a Plymouth Arrow pickup (also called Dodge D50 or its real name, Mitsubishi Mighty Max) and despite a minor head gasket leak, ran for so many miles without any other issues. True, that was the 1980s, but if they got it right back then, I'm pretty certain they're mastering the art of quality and dependability now. I really love that "mid-sized" (sister to the Nissan Rogue Compact) Outlander the most myself! 🐇

Hi David. Here in Puerto Rico nearly all trims of Rav4’s are built in Japan. I hadn’t considered a Mitsubishi SUV, but your video has convinced me to take a look. (I do prefer a naturally aspirated engineand automatic transition though.)

It looks like it uses the same instrument cluster as Toyota. The only Mitsubishi ive ever owned is a 2004 montero. That car had the best traction control system I’ve ever felt. Even better than my 21 rav4. It was awesome for some light off-roading.

Great review Dave! I am interested a 2024 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross SEL Touring or a 2024 Toyota RAV4 XLE Premium; as a customer who maintains and keeps a vehicle at least 10 years, which is the better choice in terms of vehicle long term reliablity, in your opinion?

G'day from Australia. Mitsubishi has been a major brand in Australia, and the fact the Eclipse Cross is built in Japan was probably the main reason for choosing our Exceed S-AWC in red. Being in our early 60's, the simplicity and reliability of the Eclipse Cross was also a consideration, not interested in a pocket rocket, has ample power and freeway speeds it only needs 2100 rpm. Tech is also welcomed, with adaptive cruise a treat. Warranty is awesome and on delivery a $1000 fuel card is also included ( 2023 plate sold in 2024 promotion. For seniors who have no more child intervention, this vehicle is perfect for two and is very comfortable. Recommended to all. Cheers.

Hi from another Aussie, your sentiments are virtually the same as mine. Have recently purchased an Eclipse Cross for my wife and couldn't be happier. A perfect little feature packed commuter. A lot of car reviewers here bag the infotainment screen but it is more than adequate and easy to navigate.

As I saw you have top line trim but it still some blank button missing from the steering wheel. my complain: common It's 2024, if Mitsubishi can put at least 8"-10" touch screen on the dash on all trim. it will attract many other brand buyer. Younger those day only look 2 thing (music and big radio screen).

The only Japan built compact SUV I want is a Mazda Sprit Racing CX-30 that's Made in Hiroshima...and if Mazda won't do it (idk why, the CX-30 is their best or second best selling car), I would like Subaru to make a Crosstrek WRX in Japan. That would definitely help the dwindling WRX sales (it's just too ugly in the rear)

I'd be okay with Mitsubishi, but I think the problem is how you can tell the wheelbase is so short and narrow and the body almost looks too big for the stance. New Outlander seems to have solved this, but Eclipse Cross is just too awkward looking. Drivetrain is brutal also... Good enough for rental, but just barely.
