Japan Erects Wall Blocking Mount Fuji View to Ward off Tourists | Vantage with Palki Sharma
Mount Fuji is Japan’s highest mountain. But soon, its view will be blocked. Japan is erecting an 8-foot wall to ward off tourists. Because tourists misbehave and overcrowd a popular photo spot near Mount Fuji. Japan is witnessing "overtourism" amid a travel boom. 33 million people are expected to visit Japan this year. In a first, Japan saw more than three million tourists in march. But this nation is hardly the only one. Tourism will break records globally in 2024. It will add $11.1 trillion to the global economy. But at the same time, overtourism will create an array of problems including overcrowding, infrastructure problems, and soaring housing costs. So many countries are battling overtourism with over-the-top solutions. Palki Sharma tells you how.

It was just in March that Japan banned tourists from certain streets in Kyoto - the ones with teahouses where geishas work. Too many ill-behaved tourists. They also are limiting the number of people who can climb Mt. Fuji each day (4,000 people) and are now charging a fee.

You are right. But tourism has it's own problems as well. Mostly local people of the tourists area face problems like too much garbage people throw randomly, expensive markets, noise, too much unexpected traffic and much more. In india, authorities should be concerned about these problems as well with solutions only then they should promote more tourism.

Countries must come up with multiple solution for over-tourism. But tourists needs to keep their manners and show respects to local residents and all pubic and private areas. Some tourists stealing hotels’ belongings (pillow, tv, electronics and valuables). Packing multiple meals from breakfast buffet or pretending they paid for their meals… Tourists grabbing people’s arm with rare outfits whose on their way to work, just so the tourists can take multiple photos. Eyes being flashed, outfits ruined and showing up late to work is not pleasing at all. Cheery blossom trees take years to recover or they can easily get sick from an injury. It’s really heart-breaking to hear some tourists would shake and break branches for photos of good memories in Japan.

All countries should ban the people who take pictures and disturb others in public places. We go to see the place but people with cameras(be it phone cameras or DSLRs) block the way and feel like they own that place. They disturb others from walking freely. Nowadays these people are disturbing in the gyms also.

Like imported car, India should impose 70 to 100% tax on foreign pleasure tour and utilize that to develop Indian tourist spots to attract foreign tourist.

no one comes in India except healthcare, spirituality and to get 1M views on KZbin. India, Pakistan and Bangladesh are black listed countries for foreigners. Reason is overcrowding, unclean toilet and garbage. India is losing foreign tourists. Also india counts indian immigrant and nri tourists as foreigners. The number showed by govn is fake cuz indian immigrants, NRI are not foreigners.

Good for them. I was there a few months ago and the tourists are annoying and have no consideration for the local residents.

Xenophobia degraded Japanese economy for past 3 decades. Wirh this move, not just fuji region but nearby places will have ripples too. - Could be a beneficial step with respect to more peace and less pollution, but Japan's nain problem is not Tourist rather its exploitation of old age people by not providing regular interest incomes. - People till 80s are busy managing funds bcoz they can't keep too much reserves and need to keep searching for high laying dividends in stock markets.

I don't think so. Blame the tourists that disrespect the culture and the Japanese people just simply for having something to post on social media. Climbing on residential roofs just to get a photo? That is THE shame.

Imagine your house’s front yard and entrance stairs being used to dine, to take photos, to trash by crowds of people. You need to collect all trashes multiple times everyday. How about tour buses and multiple cars using your’s and neighbors’ parking lots for free? Multiple car accidents and injured or dead people for a best view at your house. This view of Mt Fuji and Lawson store was posted on social media and got too much popular even though it’s a private property which is clearly not for touring. Building a wall may not be a best solution, but demands from the residents are being ignored daily by tourists.

Let us thank the tourists that disrespect not only the Japanese culture but the Japanese people as well. Authorities in Kyoto had to ban tourists from taking photos of geishas after instances where geishas were chased and touched for photos. This type of people think that just because they're a tourist, they have the privilege to behave however they want. It's only the travel fare that you paid, people! You're still an outsider!

I don't understand how so many people have money for all this travel when so many of us are struggling just to survive... Plus, tourism house rentals have made long-term rentals for locals almost disappear. It's leading to a big housing crisis... We need to do something to address this...
@realracing3specter295
@realracing3specter295 9 күн бұрын
but they have travel channels, they are travel influencers, who are "paid" in advance for their entire trips already... there is a huge rise in those people who travel for someone else, or for their "audience"... not for themselves... there are less people who actually want to travel to feel good and have good experience, and could actually afford it in the first place. but now they are all replaced by trashy influencers, whose only job is to travel for their sponsored companies... and THAT has made travelling abroad overrated and ridiculous, all housing goes to travellers, while locals struggle for rent.
