These planned ships are not Destroyers, but rather Aegis ships. Both are sometimes recognized as having the same meaning, but in Japan, the two are distinct concepts. Land-based Aegis was planned, but the plan was canceled due to opposition from the residents of the planned construction site. This is the alternative, and in order to carry the equipment that was supposed to be on land, the ship inevitably became huge.

Yes, these two destroyers are not exactly like the Atago and Maya class destroyers. And in no way a replacement for them. More accurately a dedicated ballistic missile defense BMD ship fitted with Aegis SPY-7 radar and SM-3 interceptors. US is also planning to use a San Antonio class design for pure BMD role if I'm not wrong.
@TigerPantsRocks
@TigerPantsRocks 2 жыл бұрын
This ship will be a compromise between what the politicians, navy and citizens desire. The Japanese political system restricts the nation to defense but also wants the ability to intercept ballistics missiles. The Navy wants more Aegis class warships capable of engaging Chinese fleets and performing multirole disaster relief. The Japanese citizens don't want any missiles or defense bases near their homes and cities. The result of all these factors have pushed the Japanese Navy to develop a dedicated anti-ballistic missile platform with the SPY-7 radar which requires a very large chassis. I do believe that the quality of these ships will be world class and it will provide Japan with anti-ballistic capabilities that even the USA lacks.

Masahisa Sato, currently Secretary General of the LDP Parliamentary Defense Committee, has tweeted that the Aegis system-equipped ship is superior to the "Maya class." It will be equipped with SPY-7 and BL9, downsized to run with the fleet at over 30kt, anti-submarine and air defense capabilities (SM6 and ESSM also added), standoff 12SSM, CEC, and EOR capabilities, VLS will be over 200 cells. Most of the counterattack capabilities, such as the Tomahawks that Japan will purchase 500 of, are expected to be equipped on these vessels as well. I believe this is the latest news about this ship

Well its a balancing act and the politicians know they need to play but also dont want to. The JP military industrial complex is hamstrung in funds to be able to pursue new ventures/projects and want to pursue foreign markets yet no one want to buy their products really bc they're both too expensive compared to the competition and are out preformed by their competition. So the politicians are hesitant to buy a expensive shiny new toy for the military when there are offerings from allies, namely S. Korea and US, that offer better performance and price. Due to the starved budget, operational costs are higher as they're constrained for staff; while another issue is that the facilities available to make the latest weapons platforms aren't cheap by nay means, and the companies have skimped out on bigger factories in order to save costs, which will inevitably hamper them in the long term as they get orders, which lead to delays. Another issue its a brain shortage or stifling of. With how JP is, there aren't many people that go into the military industrial complex as they have either a pacifist mindset or dont want to partake in the manufacturing of weapons of war. And when they do, new ideas arent often times considered due to a strict seniority based leadership, ie you dont speak up to offer good ideas unless you prompted to or if you have a good idea, pls submit it for review. This has often led to stolen ideas or stolen credit by senior designers and researcher in Asia as a whole as those in senior positions will take credit for their juniors.

Why … just why would Japan do that? Small ships offer no other advantage than cost, meanwhile lacking all the things big ships can offer: higher stability in high seas, longer cruise range (hence can accompany carrier groups), higher weapons capacity, longer range weapons, more powerful radars (hence better detection range), more helicopters (hence better anti submarine capabilities), etc. And… Japan is not poor and is more than capable to build big ships. What you suggest makes zero sense.

The fact that the land-based Aegis interceptor system, which was originally planned to be operated by the Army, is now under the control of the Navy. Sloppy investigations and explanations by the Ministry of Defense have led to a lack of trust in the land-based deployment by the local community, and this has become a political issue. And, as mentioned in the video, the lack of intercept capability against new weapons. Although there is a budget problem, the operation of this system is efficient only because it is deployed on land, and if it were to be deployed on a naval vessel at sea, the operational cost and manpower would be too great. Moreover, the initial goal was to specialize in ballistic missile interceptors so that the activities of naval vessels equipped with the Aegis system, which are operated by the Navy, would not be restricted. However, if they were to be operated as naval vessels, they would naturally be exposed to the threat of submarines and other vessels. As a result, a naval vessel is needed to protect the fleet from submarines, but a huge naval vessel with low mobility would limit the fleet's activities. On the other hand, if they are equipped with anti-submarine combat capability, they will require more personnel and cost more, so they will have no choice but to reduce their size. As the U.S. Navy has scrapped its plan to build a ship equipped only with missiles, this is a very difficult problem to solve. Surface vessels are also high-value targets that can be easily supplemented and attacked, although they are difficult to replenish or repair once they are worn out. Just as the U.S. Navy uses submarines to operate nuclear missiles, surface vessels must be considered at risk of attrition. Although large, heavily equipped vessels may seem powerful and attractive, they are also equipment that the Navy would prefer not to have, since it must consider the possibility of losing them.

The best defense is a good office. This is the design philosophy of a samurai sword. if you strike it on its edge, it is invincible. However, if you strike it on the flat side, it breaks fairly easily. instead of loading the vertical launch tubes with anti-aircraft, and anti-missile defenses, you could load them with Tomahawks, which have a range of 1000 miles. Or about 1600 km. should be enough to strike Beijing, and most major Chinese population centers. Japan does not officially have nuclear weapons program, but because they have been using nuclear power plants for generations, they have the technology. Because of the constant nuclear threats from North Korea, and China’s protection of North Korea, the Japanese public has become increasingly paranoid. this is resulted in broad political support for rearmament. Chinese wolf warrior diplomacy doesn’t help. I never thought that I would see the day when Japan would be discussing defense policy with India, Australia, UK, and the US. But here we are…

First of all 20 thousands tons seems too much. At this weight they should be classified as cruisers. The doctrine of the quantity is against a few big ships rather than more smaller ones. In this case 4 destroyers of 2 billion each would be much more valuable than 2 cruiser at 4 billion each approx. The antiballistic role requires big destroyers of about 10 thousand tons but not necessarly of 20 thousand tons. In a 10 thousand tons ship can fit almost the same armament than a 20 thousand tons ship, especially when the high cost of the armament is a limiting factor. At the end 1 hypersonic missile destroy a 20 thousand ton ships as much as a 10 thousand tons ship. Quantity has a quality all of its own (Stalin).

Its the radar thats dictating the size of these ships. And those radars r far larger than watever is currently available on the current line of Burke or Burke-like destroyers. Same reason why the Ford is not much different in size than the last gen Nimitz: its design has been optimized to carry that amount of equipment effectively. They didnt design the ship and then thought about what to fit on it afterwards. They were told that ship needs to carry a certain sized equipment, and the ship’s design followed suit.

Note here that "war" is not the steamroller ways of the US and Russia, war for China is subtle and covert as they know democracy's greatest weakness is that it cannot act without public support. Japan, South Korea, the Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia are planning to defend themselves from a coming war. Look at a map of Asia 20 years in the future. What do you see if countries and the world don't act against China's bullish behaviour?

I'm no expert but this idea just seems not very efficient. Japan's military planners definitely need to look at onions. 2 such large warships is less useful than 4 warships of 50% size (e.g., Japan's current Aegis ships). The only good thing about such large warships is their ability to carry large & powerful sensor complex. Having 160 missiles capable of defense against ballistic & hypersonic threats is good as long as those threats come from only a few directions & all converge to 1 point (which is very unlikely). Having 20 such missiles at the right position of each potential direction of threat origin to deal with a fraction of those threats each is much more effective.

Dutch Zeven-provinciën class frigates (which are frigates in name only) have by far the most powerful radar of any navy ship on earth, yet still fit on a normal sized frigate. So there's no need for a 20.000 tonne ship, they could have a 80.000-10.000 tonne ship with more superior radar than the one portrayed in this video if they opt for radars from Thales Netherlands. Of course packing 160 or so missiles does mean it would need to be a hefty ship, but considering the Zeven Provinciën-class frigates weigh 6.000 tonne with 40 VLS cells (so 160 missiles if quadpacked) and has a 2.000 km range very high resolution search radar, it's completely feasible.
@thantzweaung9080
@thantzweaung9080 2 жыл бұрын
@@pieterveenders9793 The Zeven-Provinciën class frigates are good but not that good. The radar complex is above average but overall sensor complex is just average, weapon complex is not even good enough to be considered mediocre (despite SM family & ESSM family). Russia's project 22350 (& later 22350M) or Spain's & Australia's F100 has similar (or even better) radar complex & better overall sensor complex, & much better weapon complex. & most current (& near future) air-defense missiles capable of engaging ballistic threats can't be quad-packed unless the launcher cell is massive.

Its that radar they wanna mount… its practically twice as large as those mounted on the arleigh burke class destroyers. And something that powerful and important, theyd want to be on patrol as long as possible before the next patrol cycle, so thats endurance (fuel and supply), and since the ship is already that big,, might as well slap on 200 VLS cells atleast.

@@thantzweaung9080 Zeven provinciën-class frigates literally have the best naval radar complex on earth, the Extended Range upgrade of SMART-L which the Zeven provinciën-class has gives it a 2.000 km detection range, literally 4-5x more than that of any other nation. Not only does the SMART-L ER provide the Zeven provinciën-class frigates (and any other ship to be equipped with it) a 2.000 km detection range of ballistic missiles and all kinds of other objects and (potential) threats, but it's even that good that it can be used for a fire solution at such extreme ranges as wel, as was proven during several joint naval exercises where a Zeven provinciën-class frigate detected a ballistic missile at well over a 1.000 km distance, but it then passed the radar track on to another ship of an allied navy which shot down the ballistic missile with SMART-L's radar data.
@thantzweaung9080
@thantzweaung9080 2 жыл бұрын
@@pieterveenders9793 Still, no. No L band radar can actually provide usable data for proper engagement. That's why L band radars are used together with S band & X band & even K band & Ku band radars. SMART-L is very good but APAR is average, making radar complex of the Zeven-Provinciën class frigates barely above average. Those ships have average overall sensor complex & combat management system, & rather weak weapon complex. (as mentioned before)
