Meta Knight is a surprisingly powerful anti-meta character, if you think about it. His offstage edgeguarding is second to none, and that’s really strong against many of the high/top tiers with poor or straightforward recoveries. With consistent bridge combos, a good Meta Knight could easily make waves in not only the tournaments, but the tier lists, too.

I feel like a LOT of characters are tournament viable but it takes a really dedicated and skilled player to prove it. Some of the top tiers still haven't found major wins or at least got top 8 placements in majors/supermajors.

I legit got bodied by a Meta Knight on Elite Smash the night before this video was posted lol. He had over 11.9 million GSP and was styling on me the whole game. I was certain Meta Knight is tournament viable with the crazy combos and edge-guarding game he has, and Abadango proved it. Meta Knight may actually be high tier. I'm so glad he's popping off, now. But if this guy is popping off, what about Sora? Oh gosh...

Honestly the issue now is that MK requires actual effort. It's the same with the Miis they're all underrated because people don't wanna learn. They don't wanna do matchups and customisation based matchups so they write them off. MK low key at least mid tier

The problem with MK is that if your combos starting at 0-10% doesn't kill, you only did 40% and now you have to play neutral until the oponent is at 120% to kill him That's why a lot of characters are more viable

In case anyone doesn't know, the Japanese voice actor for Meta Knight in smash brawl, 4, and ultimate is the same voice actor for the Japanese version of Meta Knight in the anime. (Dedede does not get this treatment.)

yes, the edgeguarding and combos are crazy. but what I've always found to be the thing that gives metaknight the boost he needs is how insane he can play neutral. The movement, fast hitboxes, multiple jumps, dimensional cape, all mean he controls the pace of the game - which is perfect against the current meta shifting into steve, min-min, etc. I picked up mk 3 months ago for those reasons, and now it's paying off

I think the biggest thing with a lot of the high tiers is the lack of edge guarding keeping them from coming back. Meta knights edgeguarding potential is insane

For someone with close to 3k hours of playtime with MK, but who hasn't had the chance to attend tourneys, this was incredibly validating to see. It's almost absurd how many negative comments I've received when sharing MK combo clips... "Not a true combo", "Bad DI" etc. Between Bonk! and Abadango, there's now plenty of evidence that MK can contend with the best in Ultimate, he just requires very hard work, and nerves of steel to maintain that level of precision in high level play. I have to salute Sakurai.. He made the skill floor on the character MUCH higher, but still ensured that with enough dedication and courage, Meta Knight Da Bess.

I've put way more time than 3k into playing and performing music, recorded and live. I've got a full time job + massage therapy license for backup. The miniature in my profile pic was hand painted by myself. I've traveled to 12 countries, and have a network of friends and family across the globe. Most top tiers have good recoveries (even if simple) and good ledge trapping or landing punish. Meta might be lacking else where but his off stage game and options to land are so much miles better than I'm pretty sure literally the entire cast actually. Since the top tiers are have strong recoveries it makes it means they demand even better off stage guarding to actually be punished which meta knight actually elivers

My brother and main sparring partner mains meta knight, I been saying he’s a sleeper high tier :p ever since his upthrow became a kill throw again he’s damn good. He has some matchup checks and his ladders don’t work on the whole cast but even without them his biggest weakness is that he has low damage output sheik style. Very good at winning neutral and very threatening if he gets you off stage but eventually he can kill throw you or kill you with stray bair/nair/dsmash

not to be that guy but this game’s meta would be so good right now without steve and kayuza lol, so many characters that were considered low or mid have been popping off and i feel like that wave really came into form with the better performances from people like elegant, skyjay, bassmage etc. i feel like that port priority this year was the sign of good things to come before the huge meta shift when steve’s and kazuya’s got a lot better. i don’t know though, maybe we just need to figure out the m/us better, time will tell

I’ve seen MKLeo use Meta Knight very rarely against other top players. I believe only in squad strike. I never seen his meta knight lose a stock. It is a huge threat that he doesn’t use for some reason.
