Japan Culture and Tradition
Japan is famous for having one of the richest and most interesting cultures in the world.
Many of the country’s ancient practices and traditions are still intact today, helping to shape Japan’s unique lifestyle and global perception. While most Westerners conjure thoughts of sushi, samurai and sumo wrestlers when they think about Japanese culture (and they wouldn’t be wrong), these notions barely scratch the surface of the Japanese people and their multi-faceted culture.

Enjoy Festivities in Japan :
With a temperate climate, Japan has four lovely and distinct seasons. These seasons together with regional differences across the archipelago have given birth to various local cultures, customs, as well as “matsuri,” or festivals, in Japan. Deriving from the country’s unique Shinto religion, these festivals are closely related to Japanese people’s religious beliefs as well as customs developed in Japan’s agrarian past.
Summer Festivals / Fireworks :
Summer Festivals are another fun and exciting Japanese tradition that kids can enjoy too.Japanese fireworks are some of the most elaborate and colorful in the world. They develop new types of fireworks every year and the fireworks festivals are a summer tradition from long ago. This is an event where you can enjoy wearing a “yukata” too. There are fireworks held almost every weekend from the end of July to the end of August and thousands of people gather at these festivals. It’s very difficult to navigate these crowds or know the best place to see the fireworks from, so I really recommend requesting a tour and having a local guide take you there and back to your hotel.
Learn the History and Culture :
History plays an important part in Japanese culture. Many castles and streets are still preserved the way they were built. Having a polytheistic culture, there are also a lot of shrines and temples all around Japan. Influences from Buddhism and the traditional Shinto religion can be seen in these traditional architectures. Some of these castles and temples are listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Visit these fascinating historical sites and various museums across the country to have a first-hand experience of the history and the culture of Japan.
Temples and Shrines :
The histories of temples and shrines can go back hundreds to even thousands of years.
Take a trip to these temples and shrines and learn about how culture and aesthetics are deeply rooted in the daily life of every Japanese people. Used to be imperial capitals of Japan in different historical periods, Kyoto and Nara are both ancient cities with rich history and culture.
With many temples and shrines with historical meaning well-preserved, Kyoto and Nara are both listed as Historic Monuments in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Japan's Castles :
Most of Japan's castles were originally conceived as fortress for military defense.
They were often placed in strategic locations, but as towns and cities developed, some were built as centers of governance. As Japan used to consist of many states, there were at one point five thousand castles scattered throughout the country. Today, there are more than one hundred castles still extant in Japan. Some of the most famous castles include the Himeji Castle in Himeji city, the Kumamoto Castle in Kumamoto, and the Matsumoto Castle in Nagano.
Generally well-preserved, most of the Japanese castles are open to the public for tours and exploration.
Cherry Blossom Viewing:
As you know, spring is all about seeing the cherry blossoms in Japan. They bloom from around the last days of March to the first week of April. Nowadays there are many tours to take you to see the beautiful cherry blossoms. One thing you’ll probably see a lot when going on these tours are people having picnics under the flowering trees. This is a custom called “ohanami” or literally cherry blossom viewing. People enjoy talking, eating, drinking alcohol, and overall having a good time under the cherry blossoms.

What is truly impressive with the Japanese people, is that even after the World war 2, Japan still managed to rise up by embracing their culture and doing all means of innovation in terms of technology, for a better life, for the Japanese people.

Unfortunately there's a push for mass migration, Combined with the low birth-rate that means Japan may no longer by a Japanese country by the end of the century, Just as with many European countries. So if you want to experience Japanese culture before its gone you should go visit now.

As a matter of course, I just wanted to point out certain specifics. When an emperor passes away, he us no longer called by his personal name, rather, he is called by the name he gave to his reign. Showa, meaning "enlightenment and harmony", was the name chosen by Hirohito for his reign. He is now referred to as Emperor Showa. Those of you who visit Japan, if you use his personal name, people will correct you on that , so, just be mindful of that. Akihito, who abdicated the throne to his son, upon his passing, he will be called Emperor Heisei, the name chosen for his reign. Heisei means "achieving peace." Naruhito, his son, chose Reiwa as the name for his reign. Reiwa means "beautiful harmony." Upon his demise, he will be called Emperor Reiwa. Present Japanese history dates to almost 2,700 years ago to the year 660 B.C. when Emperor Jimmu became the first emperor. Naruhito is the 126th emperor. Nihon is the preferred pronunciation for Japan by the Japanese. It stems from the two Chinese words which mean "source of the sun." Wakoku comes from the Chinese words meaning "country of harmony." Yamato koku, as pointed out previously in another comment, means "country of the people of nature and peace." The name of Yamato was given by a group of Malaysians who migrated to Japan at some point right before the foundation of the country.

The history of Japan is very old, about 2,000 years since the Emperor's reign, but humans began to live in villages and communities in this island nation about 14,000 years ago, during “the JOMON pottery” culture. (That's 30,000 years ago, if you count the Neolithic period.) The word "NIPPON(Japan)" means the land under the sun, but another name is "WA"koku or "YAMATO koku," meaning “Harmony among People and Nature”. Japan name means “the Land under the Sun”and” the Land of "Great Harmony of People and Nature,” Surrounded by the sea on all four sides, geographically isolated from Eurasia continent in the Pacific Ocean this island nation has a warm and humid climate and is blessed with abundant clear water resources, a variety of plants, and fishery resources. Since ancient times, people have lived peacefully with nature. They have respected harmony, lived peacefully in groups, and overcome many severe natural disasters such as volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, and typhoons, with each other in groups based on their wisdom and have enjoyed the blessings of nature by cooperating. The name of the ancient Japanese nation of "YAMATO" or "WA" reflects the wishes and realities of the people to live and to survive in this natural environment of the island nation that differs from that of the Eurasia continent. And in the names of the ancient countries, the essence and secrets of Japan are hidden. “A peaceful environment can only be built through mutual give and take, each other.” One for all, all for one, the sprits of OTAGAI-SAMA, TASUKEAI (help each other, everyone)". ”In times of trouble, we are here ,help for each other.”(Komatta Toki ha Otagaisama) In public places where everyone gathers, everyone should act in a way that “Do not disturb others.“ If all participants can act in a way perfectly that “you do not cause trouble to others," that is, at the same time, it will create an environment in which “No one cause trouble to you” The same is true if we substitute the phrase "everyone always help others in need.” If everyone does this completely, at the same time, it will create a social situation in which "When you are in trouble, someone will help you.” ( could help each other, everyone) This is a very rational group wisdom to live in peace with each other. This is not for the sake of any particular person, but in order “to live equally comfortably” with each other, the obligation to act for the peace of mind of "all participants with each other" also arises. This is because Japanese have been taught through their childhood “shitsuke- education” that this is an ancient teaching, a tradition, and “a natural duty of adults.” It is a teaching and a rule of life that has been handed down in this island nation since ancient times. They have lived collectively in their island nation's environment for more than 14,000 years, and this has given them the wisdom of life to survive in that specific environment, which is condensed in the traditional Japanese teachings. Why do Japanese people insist on maintaining a clean environment to an unusual degree? Why do they place the highest priority on "not bothering others" in public places? The Japanese have learned that they must survive at the mercy of nature, which has two faces, light and dark. People who have lived in a humid island natural environment, which is completely different from the dry and stable continental natural environment, have had to survive in this environment. That is why they have accepted both the light and dark aspects of this environment without denying it, and have recognized themselves as part of the natural environment, and have used their wisdom and ingenuity to structure their society and survive. The uniqueness that distinguishes Japan from other countries and the ingenuity of its past that can be seen in every part of the country have been cultivated on this land long before modernization and passed down to the present day. The warm and humid climate is a breeding paradise not only for humans but also for many other organisms, microorganisms and bacteria. So it is also an environment where toxic bacteria can easily multiply if not kept clean with constant attention to cleanliness and freshness. Outbreaks of infectious diseases can be the cause of a community's downfall. And when a Large-scale natural disaster strikes, the first priority is to recover from the disaster by suppressing individual desires and selfishness and working together in unison to achieve a quick recovery and rebuilding of lives for each other. These have been regarded since ancient times as rational and efficient practical thoughts for coexistence. (Japan's rapid postwar economic recovery may have been due in affect to this ancient teaching was ingrained in its traditions.) This is neither so-called Western individualism nor totalitarianism, nor is it an Asian way of thinking. It is a way of life that is rational and adapted to the natural environment. It can be called hybridism, in which social cooperation and individual freedom coexist at same time, which is unique to Japan. It is an evolution and inheritance of the wisdom of ancient people who, without science, technology, or knowledge, prioritized mutual cooperation to ensure the survival of all members of a community for as long as possible. If we cannot recognize this essence, we will never understand why only Japanese culture is unique in Asia and around the world.
