JS Kumano (FFM-2)「くまの」 Mogami-class Frigate of the JMSDF

Naval News takes you aboard JS Kumano (FFM-2), one of the latest and most modern surface combatant in the Japan Maritime Self Defense Force (JMSDF)'s fleet.
We interview exclusively the commanding officer, CMDR Atushi Sakurai, on the FFM class of frigates. The missions, weapons and systems aboard (including the very advanced circular CIC). CMDR Sakurai also discusses the current deployment of the ship: IPD23.
Kumano (くまの) named after the Kumano river in the Kii Peninsula of central Japan, located in Nara, Wakayama and Mie Prefectures) was launched by local shipbuilder Mitsui E & S Shipbuilding Co., Ltd in Okayama in November 2020. The ship was commissioned with the JMSDF on 22 March 2022.
The FFM multi-mission frigates have a full load displacement of about 5,500 tons, with a length of 132.5 meters and a beam of 16.3 meters. They have a maximum speed in excess of 30 knots. The crew complement is be quite low, at about 90 sailors, indicating a high level of automation on board.

Some updates after reading an article from Naval News after IMDEX 2023 the JMSDF decided to reduced its order for the Mogami-class frigate from 22 to 12 with 10 New FFM to be acquired as a seperate new class which will be an improvement from the 30 FFM which maybe an oppurtnity to increased the number of VLS from 16 to 32 cells and a full RAM launcher with 21 missiles CIWS instead of just a SeaRAM with 10. While maintaning the same number of crew 90 and RCS with less dependent on being a mother ship for USV/UUV for MCM.

The "Mogami" class was developed with a dedicated cell to mount the domestically produced Type 12 Surface-to-Ship Guided Missile Enhanced Type, and like the "Mogami", the Type 03 Surface-to-Air Guided Missile was developed. Mount. For this reason, it is built with the purpose of extending the hull and improving the ground attack power (counterattack power). "改「もがみ」クラス”は国産の１２式地対艦誘導弾能力向上型”を搭載するために専用セルと開発し、「もがみ」と同様に０３式地対空誘導弾改を搭載する。この為に船体を延長して対地攻撃力（反撃力）を向上させる目的で建造する。

Without a doubt the Mogami class is one of the best ASW frigates on the waves, yeh it only has 16 VLS but quad pack ESSMs and you got 4x16 missiles for self defence. Their CIC is 360* and is pretty compact and advanced better than most navies Flagship command vessels.

If mothership concept picks up, many will most likely order Mogami. Including the 10,000t version AAW frigate mothership design UK is to field 5,500t GP frigate motherships (likely Poland & Indonesia too if they won't shift to usual frigate loadout), & 8000t ASW frigate motherships. Aussie 10,000t frigate motherships Germany already fielded 7000+t megacorvette motherships. Then Singapore plans to follow but a heavier one The mothership trend. This might justify heavy ships even in a cramped guerilla-oriented sea

I read on news that Indonesia and Japan has signed the agreement to export 4 Mogami Class to Indonesia, and will build another 4 in Indonesia.

It was just an offer from Japan and won't be happened. Indonesia done sign agreement for buying FREMMs but not effective yet because they can't pay on time, also there's no progress on Arrowhead because the local shipbuilder can't pay license fee to Babcock International. Indonesia is not trustworthy, for while, I think.

@@valiant8730 You know nothing and just talk BS. Arrowhead project already began in December 2022 and we call it Fregate Merah Putih Project (name of our flag). We build locally in our shipyard PT PAL because Babcock shared ToT. Why FREMM not yet effective because Italy not serious enough to promote their product. And Italy dont want to share Transfer of Technology ToT FREMM with Indonesia. They never bring FREMM to Indonesia. France promote their Rafale couple of times in Indonesia before we seal the deal 42 Rafale (6+18 efective). Demonstrate the Rafale to our Air Force. Hey dude we got the money, we got the power to decide. And now JMSDF promote their Mogami class to Indonesia. They show casing the product to Indonesia and willingly to share ToT build 8 Mogami Class in total (4 in Japan + 4 in PT PAL). You know nothing about trustworth. Its business, show us your product and then if we like it we show our money.

There is not yet agreement, we still have to decide the benefit of the project that Japan offer to us. So far they offer Transfer of Technology and cheaper cost compared to the FREMM. If Italy not active enough promoted their product, we could be choose Mogami Class. So far FREMM never visit Indonesia. We got the money, we got the power to decide.

Japan is much more stronger than its actual figure , JMSDF is just preparing for two 20,000 + grt super destroyer , but haven’t named yet , should be bigger than both US Zumwalt Class and JMSDF present biggest Izumo Class aircraft carriers. Another strong fleet is Japan Coast Guard, currently 500+ vessels, most of them are 2000 + grt and can easily be transformed into any modernized warships like frigates or corvettes or whatever within 48 hrs .

You may not know this, but UUV and SM-3 blockIIB is one of the weapon systems jointly developed by the US and Japan. The economic aid to Ukraine is also intended to indirectly subsidize NATO's military aid budget. Japan's arms exports will not affect the military balance enough to cause World War III. @@christianjunhoffman9142 I live in Japan too, and have been to almost every prefecture, there are the very few that hold racist views towards all people that are not Japanese sure… but they are very few and eventually will die off. I have met many people in the defence forces, as well as US service men and women that work with the local population and they get on great for the most part. Don’t let a few bad apples ruin a good thing. The vast majority of Japanese people don’t regret loosing the Second World War, Japan is in a better place today then ever.

Seems to lack firepower in comparison with PLA's equivalent frigate class Type 054A which has double the VLS cells. However, the AESA radar is better. Would be competent enough for territorial defence but perhaps not in an offensive role.

Mogami has 16 cell but can be equipped ESSM Block 2 active homing medium SAM quadpacked per cell, can be engage multiple targets. While 054 HQ-16 is semi active, can engage two targets only. FFM 16VLS: ESSM 4×8=32, 07VLA 8 054A 32VLS HQ-16 24, Yu-8 8 Conclusion: FFM wins🤣🤣🤣
