Part of the reason for the difference in cost is that Japan has national health insurance, so the dentist isn't charging only $50 to fix a cavity. That is the part that the patient pays. Their insurance pays the rest. The National Health Insurance tax, from what I've seen, is fairly complicated, but they do pay a monthly premium in the form of a tax. If an American has insurance that covers dental, they would pay a fraction of the total bill, as well.

i recently got my cavity treated and it only cost like 1900 yen, it’s actually cheaper than the typical annual cleaning thing in japan, majority of the citizens ( mainly adults) only pay 30%. but it can be cheaper, depends on the household or income? but those vary by where in japan u live in like children (usually until u graduate middle school but mine was free until i graduated highschool because my mom is single) get free healthcare, my mom gets free healthcare because she’s a singe mom and still has my brother who’s still qualified for free healthcare, i think the elderly pay something different too idk tho oh and apparently hospital food is pretty good here according to my mom lol

The one thing is though, they do the same work that in America is a one visit kind of thing, and split it into several visits where the do the work piecemeal.
