I blindly booked a tour with Alejandro and although I ended up going out with another member of Alejandro's team, Satoshi, I briefly met Alejandro at the 3rd izakaya in the video. He was super nice and stopped by to say hello and seemed like a great guy. My actual tour guide, Satoshi, was also great and we stayed out after the end of the tour and hit up a few extra bars that weren't on the tour. I had an amazing time, felt super comfortable even though it was just me and the guide and got back to my hotel as late as I might after drinking with friends back home. Afterwards, he followed up with great recommendations for the second leg of my trip in Osaka. Highly recommend.

Alejandro is absolutely right with one thing. Japan is a relatively safe country but the most dangerous thing for a foreigner visiting the nightlife scene is mixing a welcoming Izakaya, equally welcoming bar-mates, and an ample amount of SHOCHU. That stuff will sneak up on you hard! ...oh and by dangerous, I mean memorable (even if hazy) amounts of fun! Some of my fav times in Japan.

Looks like so much fun. The bar scene in Japan, espeically Tokyo looks so happy, unlike the bar scenes in some North American cities, where people are sitting in separate groups and not really interacting. The drinks and the quality and variety of food is great. The beer in kettle reminds me of a Toronto Chinatown thing after the bars and alcohol service time closes... some Chinese restaurants offer "cold tea" ...aka beer in teapot.

According to The Miyagi Cohort Study "Among men, the risk for all-cause mortality was significantly higher in past drinkers than never-drinkers. There was a dose-response association between alcohol consumption and the risk of all-cause mortality among current drinking men. Similar association was observed among women"

I live in the state of California and everything, including the air and water, is carcinogenic here so I've just stopped breathing and drinking water, I'm feeling fantastic! You're also talking about the country with one of the highest life expectancy in the world with a huge drinking culture so either the studies is only one tiny factor or the Japanese are all-powerful death defying demi gods.
