The unfortunate thing about having these vending machines here in the UK is that there is more chance of them being vandalised here, there isn't a week goes by where someone tries to steal a cash machine, in Japan they have a lot more respect and trust

Returoto in English is retort packaged which generally refers to food in a sealed pouch which has heated to a high enough temperature to sterilized the content making it shelf stable, very much like canning.

Mark, I think my workplace used to have a sandwich machine as well as soda and snack machines. Sad thing was, not enough bought into it and there wasn't enough regular choice to get the business. Which stinks because when COVID hit, we could have used it to keep from calling out for food when places like Jimmy John's closed before your overnight shift starts.

Hi Shizzy, growing up in Brooklyn in the 60's as a kid we would occasionally go into Manhattan, mostly to the Museum of Natural History or the Christmas show at Radio City Music Hall. You would think for a 8year old child that would be exciting and it was but the biggest thrill was going to the Automat. This was on 42nd Street near Grand Central Station and it was a restaurant with no staff, ALL vending machines. Slightly different from what you were at but to a child it was fascinating. Sandwiches wrapped up in plastic wrap on plates soups and other various items all purchased with coins, no bills because nothing was over one dollar 💵. So shiny and clean. It was also a big tourist attraction. So Thank You for bringing back such fond memories.

Very interesting selection you had in what seemed to be a tire store (though if they had to work on your car as well, that WOULD take the hour most people would have for lunch, so no surprise they had hot food sold as well as drinks, because that way you can have it all in one stop: fix your tires, then fix YOU up with lunch). Unique choices, but some of it catered to the Japanese tastebuds too.

The Pouch that the curry comes in is called a retort pouch. It's the same pouches that MRE ration, Space food, Capri Sun/Kool-aid, and some Camping foods come in. It's pretty much a plastic + metal pouch instead of canned food.
