We used to have cans that open with a tool like that in the United States a long time ago. I feel so nostalgic, because my grandmother used to get some of those! Here we have canned corned beef hash with tiny diced potatoes in it. It’s probably not as good as the fresh stuff, but the canned is pretty tasty. I like to add diced onion to mine when I heat it up, and sprinkle it with Parmesan cheese. I may add some to my grocery delivery now for nostalgia’s sake!

What a wonderful episode!!! Here in India too there is an entire sub-culture around trains that has its own literature, social norms, foods and artefacts. Riding unreserved 1200 kms from university to home...on a sudden decision in the hostel...staying awake all night huddled around the vestibule and doors...eating hot snacks at all the stations...those are abiding memories. 🙂

@TabiEats I just watched Ai's video. I would love to see you two try cooking with dagashi treats. Maybe Satoshi should try cooking with Umaibo...would they work as a crust on cooked fish or vegetables, for instance? I bet you two can come up with some clever ideas. Shinichi needs to find a way to come up with a dessert recipe. There are so many options with such a variety of dagashi! I wish I could magically come to Japan and visit many places, and that bar is one of them. It would be fun to try all those dagashi treats!!!

Funny to see how corned beef is so different around the world. Here in the Netherlands corned beef is usually a luncheon meat you are supposed to put on a slice of bread. One day you really need to come to the Netherlands, because in the city of Utrecht there is a museum dedicated to trains....just to quench Satoshi's thirst for trains...LOL Happy to see Ai in your videos back again and I know I am going to enjoy the series you are doing with this very funny lady....the way she reacts always puts a smile on my face. I have a lot of memories about trains, growing up in Minnesota. My dad helped to run a volunteer tourist railroad in Duluth, so every weekend I was helping to sell souvenirs or playing with the other kids in the caboose. My dad taught me to jump on and off of the train when it was moving, because their train went really slow.

A snappy vienna sausage?1? Wow. In America, our vienna sausages are mushy and tasteless without hot sauce or some other sauce. Every morning we rode together and continued to converse for many years even after I turned him down.
