I like how he just casually drops this daunting subject and just says to not worry about it afterwards lol

As he said, learning any language less like a "sprint" and more like a "marathon". You gotta keep learning until you can make use of the language, and then keep using said language so that you won't forget how to use it.

In case you weren't already confused, 本(ほん) on its own means book but the counter for book is 冊(さつ)😵‍💫

Counter for small animals is constantly used for big animals. Even in your example.

I've been learning a bit of this on duolingo. This is very helpful. I need to find other ways to study, though, as duolingo doesn't teach why things are the way they are or when to use certain things. Very frustrating.

Cure Dolly's "Japanese from Scratch" playlist (on YT) is what got me to N4 from "scratch" (now N2) and is still something I refer back to for refreshers.

One thing that always confuses me is the counter for one day / first day of the month. Like is it tsuitachi or ichinichi and when ?

We also use counters: a flock of birds, a dozen eggs, a handful of nuts... Japanese people are not so crazy after all :]

Not sure those count - I think they’re called collective nouns - but we do have uncountable nouns which require a counter, like ‘a piece/sheet of paper’ and ‘a pair of glasses’

If something like counting makes u give up, you'll never be able to learn japanese. I literally spent 11 years learning chinese, and everything was way more complicated than japanese,(there are also counters in chinese) I am now fluent in chinese and that's because I didn't give up! If counters make you give up on counting in japanese, don't even think about ever being fluent in japanese.

@@Rachel-en2xw Can't believe its been six months. Still practicing vocabulary every day. Still struggling, but i guess you'll be happy to know I haven't given up. Learn about 7 new words a day. 俺はまだ下手でうよ、、I'd be happy if it only took me 10 years to become fluent haha. That being said i HATE counters and will learn them eventually,
