Interesting observation. I never had any preconceptions about what ethnicity I wanted to date... But (and I'm a white gringo gaijin waygook) my most serious relationship ever was with a Latina. Then I spent a decade in Korea. I hooked up with plenty of Korean women, but never found myself in a serious relationship. Probably my fault. Now I'm...ok, fine, I'll say it: in love with another Latina. It's always been hard for me to say the L-word, but I think telling her I want to wake up next to her every day gets the point across. Don't know how much you can generalize about...not even a race in this case, but a linguistic group... One looked vaguely East Asian, the other is a natural brunette with brown eyes, but otherwise looks about as white as they come... But they both LOOOOVE being held and kissed all the time, which is perfect for me, because I am also abnormally, compulsively affectionate.

Depends on the people. Personally, I don't feel the need to compete and get my voice heard, so I'm usually the quiet one groups just listening. Group dates aren't a good way for people like me to shine, which is why I avoid them early on until someone has a chance to get to know me.

An more introverted people will probably try to be more subtle about it to so as to not cause any sort of confrontation. Of course there’s exceptions to this, but I wouldn’t just say a western woman would ‘probably’ be more forward. Maybe half the population would? The more extroverted and confident ones? The other half of the population is probably going to just back away or do a little dodge and awkward laugh or something.

It is a bit off topic but the food aspect of the video made me wonder about Japanese cuisine. I am a Korean American and grew up in the United States of America. Without much direct exposure to Japanese culture, I have only been able to think of Japanese cuisine as consisting of udon, sushi, ramen, and other foods that one might find in for example a Japanese anime. There was one time where I visited South Korea and wanted to see if there was a place where authentic Japanese cuisine was served but I imagine that in South Korea, the cuisine would be somewhat adapted to match Korean tastes more than a Japanese one. Hopefully once travel is normalized and the Coronavirus no longer poses the same problem as it does today, I will be able to visit Japan and get a better sense of the Japanese culture, mindset, and social customs.

From hearing fellow travelers my bet is, it isn't very similar same way French and UK or German food aren't the same. There's something about sharing borders and origins for millenia but being quite distinct cultures. Mexico and Canada might not be great comparisons next to the US though for being comparatively too culturally similar or too disjoined in time and culture like in Mexico.

If things develop further you can always ask her to give you a tour. You should always have something planned so that she knows how to dress. Bwahahaha... The "I love you" thing is such a misunderstanding! In some western cultures or America, saying "I love you" in that way to someone you're in a relationship with can be big deal, and just saying "thank you" back can be one of the worst things to say because we take it to imply that you don't feel the same way. While we say " love" more freely, what we mean and how important that word is depends on our intonation and context, etc. I really like how both sides of the situation are shown so potentially people from Japan and other countries can understand both sides. Neither one did anything wrong. It's just a difference in culture that leads to some very hilarious moments, lol.

I believe the channel that made the original video is based in Canada, so it's possible that this is different there, but in the United States, it would definitely be considered quite rude for him to wait until she shows up in her nice clothes to suggest going on a hike. It would be much more normal for them to have discussed going on a hike ahead of time so that both of them would know what to wear (and also so that he would know that she would enjoy it).

I've seen a interesting video of a kpop group called izone. They have a few Japanese members, but most are korean. Koreans don't seem to have a problem saying I love you to their family members. When they had the Japanese members call their family to say I love you, the reaction was confusion, followed with, are you okay? Setting with awkwardness.

That was exaggeration to express a point, but its true. If it was not planned a month in advance and its any kind of surprise or spontaneous action it makes Japanese feel bad. Even if he offered her to have dinner in different restaurant then they have planned or something similar it would make her feel uncomfortable. Source married to Japanese woman.

I think the point was that the Japanese never use the phrase "I love you" even to romantic partners. I've met Europeans who are the same way, with a literal translation of this English phrase but it never gets used by anyone ever.

Again, culture clash. In my country (Brazil), if you go to the right places (like night houses, clubs, bars/pubs and etc.), you may get a woman or a man in the first night. Holding the hand of the other person is soooo common and banal (if they are in the stage of "ficar" here, which may start in the first night they meet). I saw your eyes "flashing" when you saw both holding hands with each other. LOL... in my country it's strange if a couple don't KISS in the same night they started to be together, just some kind of chemistry between them is enough to kiss. We have 3 stages of dating: 1) Ficar = it's just sex, it's a "colorful" friendship only. Like a special friendship between two people and/or it can be a way to see if we want our partner, if we like the same things and etc. It can also be seen like a test drive, but it's also a bed test drive if you know what i mean. There's nothing worse than a person who is not so good with the XXX matters.

9:02 I know about these words and what they mean, they're the cause of so many annoying and unnecessary misunderstandings in Anime (and that's the main way I learn Japanese: Anime with subs), seriously, the problems that the politeness of not directly saying what they mean causes, I would argue can be seen as impolite itself (I mean what's polite about making everyone involveds lives harder?)

lol watching this is a trip in 2021 because Japanese women would have REALLLLLY liked 1950's era American guys. Post women's liberation newer generations of American males were taught to take a woman's opinion into account in decision making. Prior to this everything you described was considered the mans job and the women just followed along as that is just how things were at the time. This is an extremely interesting video. Japanese women raised in America are way way way way different from what you just described as they were not raised in the culture of Japan with these expectations. Even in the workplace when guys try to act like that it does not go well at all but I know in Japanese workplaces I have heard they are respected.
