Correction- Japanese Maples have a Fibrous Root system. Which means it’s hard for the roots to damage a house foundation.

That was sort of his point. The roots are not Japanese maple roots on his tree because it was grafted. They might be roots from a a sugar or Norway maple.

@@NMranchhand acer palmatum (Japanese green maple) is the root stock for any Japanese maple graft otherwise the grate wouldn’t take. The green mountain Japanese maple is a vigorous tree that can handle most zones 5-9.

@@ryanodell417yeah I’ve actually seen branches come from the root stock in big box stores and it was always green Japanese maple. I thought about taking them as cuttings since they’re unwanted/unused otherwise.

How are you buying two trees exactly? Can you divide your maple into two and make it two trees? Obviously not. Everyone knows for the vigorous growth lot of trees, ornamental shrubs and plants are grafted on different root stalk. IT DOES NOT MEAN you’re buying two trees. It simply means your plant has better chance of survival and faster growth.

That was a pretty good grounding in understanding the drafting of trees for the homeowner. You might think about adding a few more of the specific advantages like cold-hardiness, disease resistance (a big one for JM in U. S. ), size changing, better survival in dryer climates, etc. to give your viewer the picture that the nurseryman is trying to deliver him a value-added product.

Japanese Maples actually have non-invasive roots. They won't penetrate pipes or foundations.

I have recently started growing JM's from cuttings and have 12 new plants. These may be slower as they've rooted on their own. My Dad gave me a Sycamore Maple sapling back in 2000 which we potted up and it has grown well with a strong root system. By 2016 it was about 12 feet tall. This May, I pruned it down to 2 feet leaving a side branch and it has responded very well with 5 new branches and many leaves and is 4 feet tall now in a large pot. I even have it appear in some of my YT videos as it's been around for so long :)

I think the tree in my yard is a Japanese maple. But last summer it produced fruit . Is that normal ? Home built in 2002 I bought it in 2019. So the tree is as old as the home

Hi, I would give it enough space as if it was a mature tree. This specific tree can reach 25ft or more in spread. So I would recommend at least 25ft from a foundation or water lines. More the better. Just from my own experience, I'm not a professional gardener. Thanks for watching!

You might call the company that produced it, and ask what root stock they use. They always cheerfully tell me because most nurseries use the same few roots for the root piece, and it’s not a secret. Then ask them your questions about the ways that particular root stock is meant to improve the finished tree, and what considerations that root stock might have on how far from the house to plant it (don’t forget pathways, driveways, and, sidewalks). Even if you bought it from Lowe’s, the nursery puts their own name on it and they consider you their own customer.
