Perfect video !! I went to the Japanese store near my city, and just stood in front of the sake section for a good minute hoping no one will ask me of I need help since I has no idea what to ask for and did not want to waste their time !!! Glad you made this video !! Thank you !!

Wading into the world of sake can be intimidating given the variety and the potential language barrier. That's why a website like Tippsy is helpful to learn about sake even if you don't buy from them (although I recommend you do). Another useful website to learn about sake is Urban Sake. The creator of that website also does a podcast called Sake Revolution.

@@deanzaZZR thank you!! I went today to the Japanese market and they did not have the specific ones they had in this video, but got 3 different types close enough to the ones mentioned. So, will checkout your recommendation. Thank you 😊

You are correct IMO Smooth more mild cheeses pair well with Sake. Sharper-aged cheeses pair well with red wine.

This was absolutely fascinating. Informative and as always, fun! I have three different sakes which one day I tried together - like a wine tasting. I could taste differences but I didn't think to have them with food! Now I am going to have such fun retrying them out with all the different foods. I can't wait to try the french toast with maple syrup combination! And cheese and onion crisps??? Wow! (And now I realise I should have tried different temperatures as well.) I wonder if this will change which sake I like best! p.s. I hardly ever drink so I have a low tolerance for alcohol. I hope I don't finish up under the table! 🥴 I've never had a hangover in my life. Is this going to be the day??? 😃

Most of our early experiences with sake are with the super cheap stuff often brewed in the USA (for us Americans). Tippsy only sells premium grade sake. As in many things in Japan, if you pay more you receive higher quality.

@restaurantman

Awamori is more similar to Sōchū, since it is distilled instead of being brewed like Sake. Awamori is also higher in alcohol (typically contains 30-43% ABV), while most Sake is 9-14% ABV.

I like Sake but the only liquor store we have in Ontario, Canada only really carries the cheap stuff at retail. I'll enjoy that stuff warm in the wintertime. Occasionally they will have the little bottles of nigori. While I prefer drier, it's not bad, even though it looks a bit like, uh... They have other varieties available online, but only in extremely limited stock. I guess because there's not a big Japanese population here, and nobody knows what it is. Shame, because like mead, it's grossly underappreciated.

@@deanzaZZR That's a good one too. When I was living in Tokyo we used to go out a lot on business meetings (nomicommunication) and dinners. We drank a lot of Sake but loved Dassai 23. 39 was good too. It got to the point where I was buying the ishobin size bottles to drink with friends and family. In Japan it was around 10,000 yen at the time but in the US it's upwards of $250 USD+. Other than that Hakkaisan Tokubetsu Honjozo was a good daily drinker. Absolutely loved living in Tokyo.
