Duolingo is a language-learning app that is "The world's best way to learn a language"...
Let's put that to the test by doing some Japanese lessons with this app. I got a few comments asking about some good apps for language learning. I am a Japanese speaker who got to a high level of Japanese without using apps, and I'm going to test this method to see if it's an effective way to learn to speak Japanese.
Thanks for watching!

Actually I’ve been using Duolingo for a while now as a beginner, and they do teach you how to say “jin”. It’s just that over time when you have been accustomed to using it already, they expect you to know it’s not “hito” but “jin”.

P.s. I have been learning mainly Mandarin since June 2021 but also began to learn Japanese, so the languages are partly united by Hànzì/Kanji chatacters (with almost no differences between Traditional characters in both languages, but at the same time with serious differences between Simplified characters) and some words, but at the same time the languages are grammatically different.

Duolingo is mainly vocab and grammar XD They give weird sentences to help with grammar and vocab.
@user-ry5xq3ev8l
@user-ry5xq3ev8l 3 жыл бұрын
And It's okay for those sentences to be weird because the vast majority of sentences that we use daily, including your sentence and the sentence that I'm making right now, would sound weird if they showed up in Duolingo. We don't learn a language by evaluating the practicalness of sentences in the language and memorizing only the sentences that we find worth memorizing. We learn a language by knowing small components of the language such as words, grammar rules, and pronunciation and how to combine them to say what we want to say.

To play devil's advocate here, I think the point of nonsensical sentences like that isn't to just teach you common phrases to regurgitate, but to actually make sure you know how to string together individual grammatical elements to form any kind of sentence. Plus, dumb stuff like that sticks in your memory because you don't expect it at first.

I’ve actually been using Duolingo for Japanese and it really helped me learn in my opinion. For the pronunciation of “hito”, they typically use “Jin” when you type in a larger word where it is pronounced like that. Ive also heard that the more bizarre, unusual sentences are more for teaching you grammar rule and sentence structure, so you can make your own sentences using what you learned.

Well, as a Japanese I have to tell you, Duolingo doesn't teach you correct, natural Japanese. Most of the sentences are very unnatural and if you speak to a Japanese person using "Duolingo Japanese" , they might understand you, but it will sound weird. Also, Duolingo's pronunciation is horrible and sometimes give a completely different meaning to certain words or even sentences. Oh and sometimes it uses sentence structures that aren't correct or doesn't even exist. You're also kinda wrong about the usage of hito and jin but that is more complicated to explain and I don't have my patience to type it ^^"

@@tatsumisouma Learning a second language is seriously difficult. How many years have you spent learning English? Are you fluent in English? You believe you can write a news article in English? I just finished level 3 of Duolingo Japanese in just 2.5 months. I will be able to finish level 6 in three more months. I believe I can pass JLPT N5 right now. I have tried the sample test on the official JLPT website. Of course, I am also reading Japanese grammar books and using wictionary to understand some japanese words and terms. I will never treat Duolingo as the bible for learning Japanese. It is just an entry point for someone like me with no prior knowledge in that language at all.

@@whiteroseamericana7161 that's good and congratulations for your improvement in Japanese. Also, thank you for choosing our language, I'm really honored and moved when I see people from all around the world want to learn our language. I thin you're in the right track on how to learn Japanese in general with the tools you use and how you approach it Well, it's a weird thing as I've learnt Hungarian at first because I'm a musician and I was learning it because I was an exchange student in Hungary. That's a really hard language to learn and I'm still not sure if I'm any good at it. ^^ I've learnt English for about 4 years. Now I'm pretty confident, however there is still room for improvement. If I could write a news article in English, I would say yes. Ofc until I don't try it I wouldn't know, especially because I'm pretty lazy with my writings in foreign languages . About learning Japanese, when you're learning it, you have to keep in mind, that JLPT is a test and tests not always prepare you how to speak a language properly but how to pass the test and how to speak a language sort of "academically" if that make sense to you. So i also would recommend you to listen to movies (not anime) and songs from Japan as well as tv shows/news so even if you don't understand what's going on you could hear out the pronunciation of words and structure of sentences

I guess it was read hito since it was in a separate block by itself. I encountered a similar issue when I had to translate 'vegetable': there was one block in which was written 野菜 and there were two blocks, one which had 野 and the other had 菜. When I chose the block containing 野菜, the voice read 'yasai' as it should be. But when I chose the seperate blocks, the voices read 'no' and 'na' for 野 and 菜 respectively. My favourite sentence so far from the Japanese course: すみません、私はりんごです。

If you want to self-study Japanese, I'd say to do some research on textbooks and pick one to help you learn. If you don't want to spend money, you can pair vocabulary memorizing apps like Memrise with free websites like imabi.net or guidetojapanese.org . You can also try to find other websites if those don't suit your learning style; however, I would be aware of the fact that those websites or textbooks won't always be 100% accurate or natural. The best way to really learn Japanese is from a native speaking Japanese teacher.

Short answer Duolingo is ok. Long answer As for someone who has been learning for 4 months so I’m not a pro. It tells you stuff but I recommend to any one that wanna learn Japanese on Duolingo do not just learn off doulingo search sum stuff up. I went a whole month learning Japanese not knowing what hiragana, katakana, and kanji was. I thought hiragana meant Japanese 😂. Please search up about the Japanese language and learn the verb conjugations. Doulingo isn’t the best so I recommend you to use other apps/ videos to help as extra. Doulingo doesn’t teach you how to write the letters so your gonna need a app for that. I suggest you to use a notebook and write down notes. They don’t teach how to write kanji either which I really hate so your gonna have the search that up to. I wish they would make a voice box for the Japanese doulingo half of the time Idk if I’m saying it right. One big problem with duolingo is that it shows grammar rules in action, but doesn’t explain them. For example, take the French verb “avoir” which means “to have”. There is a different form of the word for each subject. “We have” is “nous avons” while “they have” is “ils ont” Duolingo will show you sentences that contain the phrases for I, she, we, you, and they have, but the app never shows you a chart laying out the conjugations, you’re expected to pick it up purely through repetition.

I think the problem is that they created lesson plans for an early version of the course and then later revised the material several times without updating the documentation. As it is, the course materials explain about one of five constructs introduced in a given course.

If I'm not wrong, Duolingo was intended as an external aid to your studies but not as teaching you as such. I'm currently trying to learn Russian and even though it has something called "alphabet 1", they never teach you the russian alphabet or pronunciation of the letters as such, just basic sentences.

I'd say it's more important to learn grammar and vocabulary than actual Kanji (unless you're just gonna be reading all the time). I have to learn Kanji on the side bc for example I knew beforehand "dog", I knew the phonetic "inu", but the Kanji for it 犬 I just had throw my hands in the air and go "Alright fine" and that's an easy one.

Duolingo isn't exactly an app that will help you dominate a language. It works better as an app for beginers or as a way of reinforcing your grammar. It also doesn't work for everyone, everyone has a different way of learning, so it's important to remember that. The app by itself won't help you dominate a language, but it can help you learn the basics and reinforce your grammar and spelling skills.

I once tried using My Japanese coach for learning the language. It's probably "better" than duolingo (it is paid, afterall), but it still had some significant mistakes that I can't in good conscience recommend it as a learning source. They teach you how to write the kana, but the stroke orders are incorrect, for example. There are probably other errors within the game, but I haven't touched it in ages.

@@_Astrogirl_ Someone who already speaks Japanese fluently isn't in a good position to judge how good an app for beginners is. I don't think sentences like 'would you like to buy my old socks' and the other 'unnatural' ones that you encounter when studying a foreign language are necessarily bad, because the goal is to teach grammar, and knowing the word order in these types of sentence will help you to form different sentences in the future. plus, if they sound funny then you will definitely remember the translation.
