Meet Raw, a standout Japanese student at Tokyo's famous Bunka Fashion College. After playing sports in high school, Raw had a life-changing experience while experimenting with fashion.
"Our Streets, My Style" is our original show taking you up close and personal with Japanese street style personalities. Meet the amazing people featured in the daily street snaps Tokyo Fashion has been publishing for over a decade.
Raw on Instagram & Twitter
/ lifecoming1
/ coming1101
We first met Raw (Kota) on the streets of Harajuku back in 2017. We got to know him while he attended his first year at the most famous fashion school in Asia, Japan's Bunka Fashion College. Often wearing his own handmade (or at least hand modified) creations, he immediately struck us as someone who was more serious about fashion than the average Harajuku kid.
During the summer of 2017, Raw scored an internship at the world famous Dog Harajuku boutique (known for their relationship with Lady Gaga as well as numerous other international celebrities and stylists) - establishing himself as one of the new faces worth watching in the Japanese street fashion scene.
Now a second year student at Bunka Fashion College, Raw continues to focus on making his own outfits as well as expanding his skills in fashion styling and fashion promotion. He also spends time thinking about how modern social media impacts what fashion people wear, and how people present themselves on social media.
Enjoy Raw's interview, and please leave comments if you have any thoughts or questions on what he has to say, on Bunka Fashion College, or on Harajuku.

I get emotional when i see this type of videos because i really relate to when they say people look at you weirdly just because you dress differently. For me, by just wearing a short skirt to go out my dad would look at me like im crazy. I've been to harajuku once, and I really believe the place is magical in a way that it gives people confidence and acceptance. I'm from malaysia and the fashion style of society here is mostly uninteresting, or repetitive. It's hard to express my style without people judging me for not following the norm. Raw is only 19, the same age as me, but he's already figured out so much and has such mature thoughts about his fashion and style. I hope to be like that some day.

Natasha CES I can completely understand how you feel.... I live in Switzerland and our cities aren't that big so you will get noticed very quickly if you don't dress like what's viewed appropriate or normal here... I mean there are teenagers that can dress a bit differently but I'm 20 now and people don't accept that anymore... They say things like "Take responsibility for yourself and dress your age"... This makes me sad, why can't everyone just wear what they like? I hope that one day I as well can find the confidence to just wear whatever I like and I wish the same for you :) Sorry for spamming your comment with my bad english... Hope you have a nice day

His words were honestly so inspirational, to be 19 and manage to overcome that fear of what people think about what you wear is amazing, especially as we're all brought up being told to conform to society. I'm 16 now, but i really want to take this on board. I've started to care less about what people think about what I wear, I've worn things I wouldn't have dreamed of a year ago, and now I want to fully let it go so I can stand out and not care about it👏

That's awesome. I started to dress differently when I was 8 or 9. I wore nothing but men's clothing for about a year or two, then I really embraced my sense of style around age 10. It's been twenty years now and I love being artistic with my appearance and expressing myself. Keep it going and have fun with it.

Super insightful! It's really nice to hear a bit more about how things are changing for the environment that Japanese street fashion appeared in. It's also interesting to learn about Bunka, and the philosophy that you can put in your clothes.

Wow such an inspiration! To be able to not care what other people think at 19 that's impressive. I'm just starting to not care what others think but part of me still wants to wear the fashion that's considered "normal" by society's standers to fit in and not stand out. This gives me a little more courage with wearing crazy fashions and I can't wait to go to Japan next year and shop for some crazy things! 🌈🌟🙏

I just want to thank you so much for the pure way you showcase these artists. Simple photographs of their style contrasted with only their speaking is a refreshing change from the usual overused instrumental music and awkwardly posed film segments. I got emotional listening to Raw speak about individuality, as I certainly feel that I've been fighting to find myself in a world of clones for many years now. Thank you, thank you, for sharing some rays of light and hope with the world.

I love watching these videos because it gives me even more confidence to keep wearing whatever I want and see I'm not the only one that doesn't want to follow the crowd. I get a lot shit in school for what I wear because it's different but they all dress boringly and they follow the crowd. I don't want to be like them, everyone in my school wears almost the same outfits and there's like three people including myself that actually wear different stuff. I feel like dutch students are so judging towards people that stand out, well at least the kids in my school. Next summer I'm going to Japan and Harajuku and I honestly can't wait to wear my most unique outfits and score some special clothes in the street fashion holy place x

He's so young but everything he says is really mature and inspiring! I think it's so great that he wants Japanese people and the Japanese fashion scene to move forward too. He's so pure in the sense that he truly uses fashion as a way to express himself and his emotions. I hope he does a lot of great work in future!

In Indonesia, there is a fashion designer called Diana Rikasari. I think she is more like Harajuku style. And first people think her fashion waspada weird. But now, she success and has her clothing line. Not only one but two. And write book too. So whatever kind of your fashion. Don't afraid with people's eyes. Just be your self

Every outfit slayed me, You are inspiring Raw! I go out to clubs a lot where everyone wears the same things. I try to break that mold and be myself. It feels so good not to put yourself in a box. I feel like I can truly be myself even if people laugh at me. They laugh because they are scared of being themselves. It's too bad.

We miss being 16 and those amazing teenage years! The carefree of those years to being able to pursue passions if one of the most invaluable times of our lives! It is also what that drives us to create our own custom made Randoseru backpack! In Japan we carry a Randoseru backpack through the first 6 years of school, it's such a functional and classic Japanese aesthetic but it's only available to children. We hence made it for adults of all genders and professions! If you are looking for a classic style Tokyo backpack do check us out!

Fashion is self expression, this is what he says. This is all you need to know. Fashion designers should be like artists, who create only one work of art, that can be hung in only one gallery. Prints of this work of art are worthless. Fashion is a way of life that changes with each day. Fashion only exists at the moment it is conceived and worn. It is only useful for the inspiration it gives to creative individuals at the felting moment it is seen. It has no use at all once repeated. A fashion designer is a seller of outdated ideas.
