This one is a group performance using a variety of sized Taiko. At 4:45 there is a quiet flute section, behind which the taiko are played very quietly. The song being played on flute is "Amazing Grace" - accompanied by Japanese Taiko. Quite a bizarre combination.

Watch closely the drummer back right. His stick in his right hand splits and he loses the end of it. They have a number of reserve sticks placed below the drum in a shelf, for such eventualities. At 1:45 you can see him change sticks.

I think this group is Za Ondekoza ("demon drummers"), established in 1969 and one of the first internationally touring Japanese kumidaiko (ensemble drumming) groups. They are a notable group in the history of this art form, in case you wanted to credit them or anyone was interested in looking them up. Thank you for sharing this performance!

凄いんだよ! Thanks for posting this video of a beautiful part of Japanese culture, peaceful and yet vibrant! It's an pleasure and makes you admire and respect the obvious _endless_ *HOURS* of practice, physical exercise and teamwork-the latter, at least, comes naturally to most Japanese, whose culture tends to place a greater emphasis on _"WE"_ rather than _"I"_ in nearly all social interactions and structures. Still, one can't help but stand mesmerized by the trance-inducing, calming rhythm of the taiko, and the fue complements it superbly.

So beautiful. It is amazing, and only by grace, that our two cultures have come together after such a devastating war. May we forever live in peace with or neighbor Japan, and defend our shared love for one another. Amazing grace that we will together soon share with North Korea, and all nations.

I love these songs so much I have them on my uber long playlist of music throughout the ages. One thing I have to say, though, on a funny note for fans of pirates vs. ninjas debates is that both the settings which they come from, being Colonial Americas and Feudal Japan, are well known for a bit of that genre that consists heavily of flute and drums, often reminding us of the particular styles of violence that they are associated with. In the case of Feudal Japan, there is this video. In the case of Colonial Americas, there is this marching type music featuring "Drum and Fife." Apparently, Scottish also are known for something like that.

Yea I noticed The front right drummer broke his left stick in the beginning of his solo and gracefully replaced that stick with haste. Until I actually watched the video I thought the moment he was grabbing the spare was just part of the solo good save. Awesome performance

The flute in itself is normal. All taiko performances I’ve seen there was a flute. But a higher one. Playing grace is weird. But the nice thing about it is that it’s often played by Scottish bag and drum bands. Nice to hear the difference.

While I'm used to hearing it on bagpipes, Amazing Grace still makes me tear up when played on what looks like a shakuhachi. Thundering odaiko in the background is definitely a little odd though, even played quietly. Odaiko are for war, and Amazing Grace is for making people cry at a funeral. You would play one, then the other, not both at the same time.
