@@emilymulcahy depends on the thrift store. I live in japan as well (up north and I just went thrift shopping in tokyo) and I haven't seen any with this much furniture. It's usually clothes and small appliances. The one me and my husband like cause of their price and quantity is chaotic. They're organized but the sheer volume of items make it look crazy. I had to buy a stroller (8$) for japan since it's hard to go around w an American size stroller or wagon.

So....a way to fix the stick of old drawers is...wax. not even kidding. Grab an old candle or chunks off an old burned out one and rub it on the contact friction points (top edge, bottom edge) where it sticks the most. Some people even used bar soap. Wax is the most effective from my experience. We have glider drawers now (the ones with wheels in the brackets) because easy wax/soap fixes just aren't in the front of anyone's brain anymore so it's kinda getting lost as to how to do easy fixes. Try it. See how you like it. It doesn't work quite as well on small jewelry boxes with drawers, but the chests of drawers, yes.

Actually the first thing to do is change up the sequence of the drawers to see if they fit, often they get mixed up if you pull them out for transport- nice old chests of drawers have numbers or carpenter signs in the back. And then clean the edges before waxing. A gentle tap with a rubber mallet at the joints is another thing you can do, just like measuring if the corners are 90°. Also I hate the little wheels on gliders drawers, I have broken quite a few of these buggers.

That chest of drawers was an incredible deal at $60 😥 the drawer joints (dovetails) look machine made, so it's not super old, but because it's solid wood it's really easy to resize the drawers so they fit well in the chest again. A carpenter could do it in half an hour!

Easier fix? Wax. The drawers fit fine but most of the size issue looks to be from expansion and contraction on the wood from temp changes. Waxing the drawers with basic candle wax will ease the friction points where the size shift is most noticeable.

@@bandashee Wax would do it most of the time. I think this one swelled a little so a couple passes with a finger plane would fix it right up. So about 30 minutes of work. (I'd do all the drawers) I built furniture in a factory for about 9 years. Before that it was my Master cabinet maker master carpenter Uncle telling me secrets he picked up since 1935 to 1987.

You probably don't really need to resize. if you take bar soap and rub it on the runners (bottom two corners going about a foot into the drawer) they will stay easy to slide out for years. Old trick from my Ohio carpenter grandpa.

Hey Rachel, if you want to preserve the color as it is, I highly recommend you wax it regularly if the vase will be outside. Like iron and high-carbon steel, bronze and copper alloys in general tend to oxidize, giving a blue-green color to the metal. Honestly, if it gets a little bit of a patina (the name of the blue-green coloration of the metal), it can act as a protective layer. Do some research and figure out if you want to keep it as is or let nature take a crack at making it prettier!

Lol the strawberry towels were so expensive cause they're wedge wood. Wedgewood is a brand of nice higher end tableware/teasets. All my aunts and my mom have a set, always pull them out for fancy things (easter, christmas, etc.)

They aren't the expensive wedgwood, these pieces are cheaper, the expensive wedgwood is matte cameo style with a solid color and a filigree picture in white, these are glazed, you can find a whole set of them for less than $100 on Facebook marketplace, I saw 6 pieces of it last month for $22, it's expensive because it's imported from the US I think, sort of like Japanese stuff is expensive here

@@emilymulcahy Wedgwood invented Jasperware and the process of making it is VERY involved, so yeah, that stuff is going to be pricey. Their other unglazed china is also rather pricey because it's some special super-hard and non-absorptive stuff that they developed like, a hundred years ago. If it's marked England then it's some of the stuff still made in England, if it is NOT marked England then it was made in their new factory in Indonesia. But all Wedgwood stuff, even the basic glazed stuff, is going to be higher priced than normal. It's a prestige brand that has been 'Potter to the Queen of England/the UK' for over 200 years. A large portion of their price is down to the name, and they make you pay for every letter.

Normally the cheapest thing on their website is the 7.4 inch Jasper Conran White Bone China Tea Saucer for $17 USD, but they've got about the 5.5 inch Vera Infinity Tea Saucer on a half-off sale for $9.50 USD (normally $19) at the moment. Their cheapest offering in the 'Dinnerware Sets' is the Flopsy, Mopsy and Cottontail 2 Piece Set, wherein you get a 5.5 inch plate and a 3 inch wide mug for $40, but if you actually want a normal full place setting you have to get the Blanc Sur Blanc 4-Piece Place Setting, with a dinner plate, salad plate, a bowl, and a mug, currently on sale for $93.75 (normally $125). And these are all specifically the CHEAPEST options in their category. Their classic Wild Strawberry pattern is most definitely NOT their cheapest option. But Wedgwood can't stop stupid people from dumping their wares on Facebook for far less than they paid in-store. Oh, and then there's the knock-offs.

The wooden chest of drawers was amazing for the price. Rubbing the bottom of the drawers with beeswax can really help the way a drawer glides in a piece like that.

Once again- Japanese thrift stores are so smart. They present goods so well and are targeted to welcome anyone. Thrift stores like this should exist in every country. I know so many people in Germany who have great products. Especially older people have their house filled to the brim and often even have new kitchen appliances. When they pass away, the products often end up in landfill because all relatives also already have their homes full of stuff and they keep buying new products because such thrift stores are hard to come by. E-bay exists of course, but sometimes it would be much easier to go to a second hand store to see the product directly. Second hand stores in Germany often either have expensive brand clothes or are targeted at very poor people, so if you go there it feels like stealing from the poor (plus smaller cities don’t have thrift stores at all because there are no chains like second street, book off, home off ect.)

I live in Poland and my Sunday fun is to go thrift shop on a flea market full of products from Germany. I am pretty sure the families just pay someone to take everything from the house after an elderly pass away and the things end up here. It is the młyn market in Wrocław, in case anyone is interested. We also have flea markets, but those also come with stigma and sorting through everything until you find something takes a lot of patience and time. I truly miss Japanese second hand stores because they appeared so well managed, clean, well taken care of and everything was put away neatly. There also are changing cabins and it almost feels like a regular store.

A newer thrift store opened 2 years (in Germany) near my old home that is targetting all incomes. It's so amazing in there, we got half of our funiture from there. But they get so many donations, they don't have the space. They started to decline old-fashioned very sturdy furniture because they had trouble selling it while newer-ish furniture has a higher turnover even if it sucks. Also, they don't take electronics since they don't have an electrician on staff to safe check and in that case they aren't allowed to sell them. They are cluttered with 90s/early 2000s dishes though and those are just the worst looking. In my opinion.

HMS Victory was Admiral Lord Nelson's flagship at the battle of Trafalgar. It did indeed have a lot of cannon, sadly not quite enough sniper cover. The real article still exists and can be visited. Glad you got the vase!

The vase is awesome. Just to let people know a bit, the Kanji of it, which is equal to Chinese "周凤壶", can be interpreted as Zhou (周, an ancient dynasty in China) phoenix (凤, a bird brings luck, fortune, and prosperity in ancient Chinese mythology) vase (壶). The same design would have been used in high class royal in the ancient time, kings or queen for instance.

Oh wow! I grew up near where HMS Victory (the ship that the model at 10:50 is based off of) is now kept. Its amazing how a model of it is in Japan! I also can confirm that yes, that is the amount of cannons it did and mostly still has to this day

I have such a soft spot for Poki, he reminds me of my black and white cat that I unfortunately had to say goodbye to earlier this month. I had her for 24 years and she was so easy going, very food motivated, and extremely vocal.Give Poki some extra pets for me. 😊💙

The joinery on that locking chest of drawers you saw is a sign of good craftsmanship. Pieces like that are hereditary furniture. They last for ever. Its a gorgeous piece

For a house you have to also think of what you would use for having friends over! I think you should have gotten those dessert set plated with the other stuff! You could have it for when friends are over! That’s what it’s for!!! Get it!! You need serving dishes to have dinner parties or parties and having sets are super helpful when having a really nice dinner. It makes it so you don’t have to think about the other things. Imagine just sitting at your dinner table you and Jun and 2 friends sharing a cake you got from a local bakery and that’s all you need to bring out. Put some cute candles and decor to compliment it and it would be so cute!! Also on display in a dining room cabinet would be nice. So it has a home and you can bring it easily right from the cabinet beside your table so you don’t have to go back to the kitchen. They are usually glass so you can display them.

My mom had a whole table sewing machine she inherited that was broken the entire time I was growing up so we used it as a normal table (it folded around to stow the sewing part), but my sister got really interested in fixing it, did, and now makes amazing quilts. She's moved on to a machine that can handle higher production sewing with thicker materials but she would've never gotten into quilting if she hadn't fixed that initial machine. :) Also I love loved this video because I love thrift stores, and it's something my mom and I love to do together. I love seeing wacky items especially and asking whoever I'm with if they need x item. Best weird thing I couldn't leave without is a small ceramic sheep where the head is a mushroom and the body is a cauliflower lol.

No matter what the design is on a plate, you’re tasting the food, the plate doesn’t change the flavor of food. I have several sets of dishes each set was either bought or given to me and they have their own pattern (so glad I have a lot of cabinet space)… A couple of plate sets are just plain and the others are beautiful patterns, the food tastes just as good on any plate. If you see just one pretty plate you like, just use it to put fruit on it, use it to eat a donut (or two), or put your jewelry on it. Btw, I really like the vase you picked out, cool designs on it, it’s so unique and I can see it in a garden with or without flowers in it, turn it into a mini fountain! 💖😁

13:22 if you use some furniture wax you can make wooden drawers in old wooden furniture move more smoothly. Some say to rub a candle on the runners the drawer is supported on, but I find that it flakes off over time, the beeswax furniture polish works much better.

That vase is rad. If I ever get to Japan, I'm hitting up a thrift store! Interestingly enough, Hoshu sounds like they're doing what the English did in the 19th century. Because of the high demand of goods from China, factories in London sprung up that made knock-off Chinese vases and other pottery. The way you can tell is that the quality of the porcelain is different from the actual Chinese porcelain, where we get the word 'China' from when talking about pottery. The Chinese porcelain was much finer and thinner. So it sounds like Honshu was making Chinese pottery in Japan to fill a demand for imported goods too, just about a century later.

1953! That's when they began using the mold manufacturing process, which is how our vase was made. So our vase has to have been made some time after that!

They started using the mold process then, and since thats how the vase was made, it had to be made AFTER it was implemented, meaning it COULD have been made in 1953, or... any year since. Meaning it could be 50 years old, it could be 20, it could be 10, even the company doesn't seem to know.

When actually wooden items are made you can often hear creaks and groans, the reason for this is the wood is still considered alive it's breathing. The temperature of anywhere effects those wooden items, the reason for the drawer not going in most likely is it was out of the main unit and the temperature changed and it's swelling up and that is what causes the drawer not to slide easily. A gd tip is (like someone else has mentioned) to use wax but if there is a lot of hot water humidity weather about like a monsoon season where the rain is actually warm plus there's sun which is not helping with making it hitter then any actual wooden items will expand but if there is the opposite i.e. cold weather then the wood will almost shrink/contract. The central heating in homes in the winter really cause wooden items problems as it's drying the air and that is causing the issue of drying the wood out. When items like you showed after they are made with, beautiful dive tail joints shown like that chest of drawers unit, they often once put together and is suspended in a massive water tank to let the wood swell up and that makes the joints fit better. I was brought up taking pride in handmade trades, and only have in the home actual wooden items not the cheep fake style wood like MDF, chipboard etc it has also be sustainable. But there is so much that has been made years ago we should be reusing that and even repurposing those items. You look after wood, it will serve you and following generations to come. Btw that chest of drawers unit was a lovely piece of furniture. I would love to have brought it. Xx

The pretty sakura plate could go well with refreshing or spring focused dishes. Salads, fruits, wraps and sandwiches would look nice. The greens complementing the pinks would feel svery bright and spring themed
