Food is one of the best reasons to take a Japanese train trip!

When we were visiting Tokyo, my wife and I decided to take a short trip for a night to Hakone, a well known mountainous area, home to hot springs and Japanese traditional inns. We took the train from Shinjuku in Tokyo straight to Hakone-Yumoto Station within the town.
When you take a train in Japan, you are encouraged to eat, and so we stocked up on a few essentials before boarding.
Train trip rice - 2,050 JPY ($17.96) per person
Fish bento - 880 JPY ($7.71)
Beef bento - 1,150 JPY ($10.08)
Kansai sushi - 950 JPY ($8.32)
Katsu rice burger - 223 JPY ($1.95)
Don't forget to eat some awesome Japanese food when you take a train in Japan.

Yup yup! I was actually feeling for Ying as she has to be the one to care for Micah and we all know it's not easy caring for a baby, much less overseas! But! I'm sure Mark is a good and gentlemanly husband who'll carry more of the luggage so that Ying can focus more on looking after Micah. What a lovely husband and wife team!

Traveling overseas with a baby takes a good amount of skill and patience. Vlogging the trip with the baby takes it to another level. Good Job.

Aloha Mark. I was raised in Hawai'i but born in Japan and lived there for 7 years. My Japanese mom took me everywhere via train which I LOVED riding on. One of my favorite things back then was the bento box lunches sold at the train stations except back then in the early to mid 1960s the boxes were still made of wood, and the old bento vendors would push their carts around loaded with bento boxes walking along the track calling "O bento, o bento!" My mom would let me select my lunch and she would pay the man and receive our box lunches right through the open window of the train car. I wouldn't recognize the place now.

Ying (& now Micah) always appear so relaxed. They take Mark's work/expeditions in their stride. In fact I think they very much add to the videos. A video by Mark isn't complete with at least one shot of Ying coming into view with a big beaming smile.

That Kansai sushi is called Oshizushi or pressed sushi. They pack the rice and fish in a box mold. Also you bought kurobuta which is pork not beef. Kurobuta are also known as Berkshire pigs and they were a gift from the English. Gyu or 牛 is beef. Buta or 豚 is pork.

I always have admiration for the Japanese way if doing things...such care taken with aesthetics and comfort. Facinating about Japan. Thanks Mark and Ying for giving us a glimpse of Japan

Was it really worthy paying 10$ for that cold and soggy looking beef and rice meal box?

ramarjun mahabharatham it's Ekiben, most ekiben stores sell already prepped bento boxes. And unless you got an oven stowed in your pocket while your sitting on a speeding train, you can't always have everything fresh and hot.

I have just recently discovered your videos and I must say being land-locked in Oklahoma, USA I actually feel like I'm on a mini vacation to areas of the world I will probably never see in person. Keep up the good work and thank you and your family.
