"What does the message on the display mean?" It means wait until it displays in English, because it will :) Alternatively, just match up the departure times with whatever you found on Google Maps, Hyperdia, or your seat reservation ticket. You don't need to be able to read Japanese, you only need to be able to read a digital clock. The bottom bit, btw, is hardly relevant. It's just a warning that a train is coming and doesn't stop, but it has nothing to do with finding the correct train, which is far more important to a novice foreign visitor!

Mistake on the ticket: The top of the ticket says "shinkansen tokkyuuken" but the route is Tokyo -> Osaka. Either it's not supposed to be a shinkansen ticket, or there's a new shinkansen track built at Osaka station, because last time I checked, the shinkansen for Osaka stops at Shin-Oasaka. And maybe the ticket isn't quite that large.

"Which exit for the taxis?" Follow the taxi symbol. If you are at Osaka (as the ticket said) it will definitely say in English as well. Apart from that, what foreigner uses a taxi anyway? We don't, if we don't have to. We're not Japanese, with all due respect. Should probably ask which exit is for the busses, but then again, the same logic applies: follow the bus symbol or look for English ;)

Why wouldn’t a foreigner use a taxi? They’re useful in many circumstances. Especially circumstances where you don’t know your way around and you’re in a country with a completely byzantine address system.

I imagine most foreigners stay in hotels, and most hotels are easy to find from a train station, either by just walking or by bus. It's not neccesary to get a taxi if it's a few blocks to walk. Okay, perhaps in certain (American) western cultures this is normal, but the vast majority of western cultures do not oftenly use a taxi - only as an absolute last resort. Safe to say, foreign visitors to Japan are (and can be) completely oblivious to the address system. They just simply don't need to be concerned with it.

kun reading. The on reading is "tou" as in Tokyo「東京」.

Ehhhr, absolute beginners wouldn't even be able to read hiragana, let alone know magically that tokkyuu is the limited express. Also, foreign visitors are likely to be JRP holders, so buying a ticket is seldom neccesary anyway. Ticket buying for foreign visitors should focus on non-JR ticket counters, and making JR seat reservations. Non-JR ticket machines usually display an array of ¥ amounts to choose from, so you can't go wrong even if the machine can't display English (which does happen). As for the ticket. Come on, that's just obvious by elimination. 9-5 is the date you specified yourself, the other numbers are obviously times. So the rest must then be car number & seat. Now, it can't be that the ticket says "seat number - car number - seat letter" and since seat is always a number+letter, the first of those numbers must then be car number. The other two must therefor be seat number + letter. Anyone with a brain can figure this out without ever having seen any Japanese. The ticket could be Arabic and you'd still be able to figure it out. This has nothing to do with Japanese.

You go to Japanese learning videos and argue that you don't need Japanese in a train station. That may be true but most of us aren't here because we were lost in a train station in Japan, we're here to learn Japanese.

Mr Difsh, you are right of course. You're here to learn Japanese. But wouldn't you rather learn stuff that's useful? These are the kind of things you *will not need*. There are lots of Japanese signs and announcements that you might find useful to understand, and that aren't being translated. Put it this way: if what you learn isn't useful and you'll never use it, you're bound to forget it.

Of course this is useful. You can't shouldn't choose and pick what parts of a language you want to learn, you should learn as much as you can. Train station vocabulary might not be useful in an actual train station but what about someone who want to read manga/watch anime without the help of English translation?
