Also the fact that the Japanese version of Prime's Darkest Hour was altered so that the Autobot Base was never actually destroyed. That's still one of the most confusing decisions they ever made

Back when I made my Top Ten Transformers Intros list, I did research on these shows due to the fact that the openings were really catchy or action packed, and I was feeling like I wanted more transformers in my life. Something I noticed with the Transformers anime's is that unlike the American Transformer series which depending on the era they were produced in could vary in tone. All of the anime, even Go! to an extent had a specific structure built into it. While for example Rescue bots is little more than ATM machine that will go on as long as it sells. The anime's have a two part system a setup in the first half. And a payoff in the second half. All of the anime had this system in place.

This is why when I watch them, if they have subtitles, I do subtitles. Was stoked to finally be able to see all 3 Japanese series when Shout Factory got the rights to bring them to the US. Have seen a few episode of Beast Wars Second and Beast Wars Neo on KZbin. I hope someone can get the rights and release them in the US. I have all the sets of G1 and Beast Wars/Machines. Also was lucky to find a dvd with Scramble City and Zone on it. It would be great if I could add the Japanese series of Beast Wars to them.

Headmasters doesn't really ignore the movie. I'm pretty sure there was a magazine in Japan that explained the movie plot to explain what happened between seasons 2 and 3. Headmasters kinda just abridges it down to "Optimus and Megatron died now Rodimus and Galavtron are the leaders, okay guys?" In fairness, the movie's release was delayed in Japan, so it was probably expected while the 1st Headmasters episode was being written that audiences would've seen the movie before Headmasters aired. Takara were also smart enough to explain away any inconsistencies between the Japanese shows and the movie through later media (mostly Binaltech). Oh, and Karyuudo Fansubs are subbing BW Neo and are aiming to release it before the end of the year.

I remember watching Masterforce. On a Spanish speaking channel. On Portuguese cable. Back in those days, Portuguese cable had interesting channels. I remember another Japanese cartoon with a character called Phoenix (with long black silky, girly hair) who was stuck in a way between angels and demons. It was spoken in Spanish too. Oh boy. I've been reviewing Japanese Transformers shows on my channel for its anniversary video for the past seven years. I've touched on the Takara Trilogy, Zone, the Original Robots in Disguise, The Unicron Trilogy, and recently concluded with Beast Wars II, maybe I'll do Neo if it ever gets subtitled. And it wow was it a mixed bag. Here's how I rank them. Headmasters: Garbage. Fortress Maximus is probably the worst Autobot leader in the history of the franchise. Chromodome is what Hot Shot would have been like if the later never had any character development I.E. being a jackass to everyone around him in every episode. Also blowing up Cybertron means that Optimus and by extension every casualty of the Great War, died in vain. Also also, Daniel and Wheelie have a prominent role in every fucking episode. Need I say more? Masterforce: Where to start? Filled with plotholes, switching out Metalhawk, a decent leader, with Ginrai, a Mary Sue if I've ever seen one, and Devil Z being a rejected Sentai villain. And putting humans on a pedestal over the Transformers, attempting to make it look like they are more special. In an Transformers show. I am not amused. And yet I still enjoyed it more than Headmasters. Victory: An improvement, the format is definitely more like the episodic original series. Nobody was annoying, on the contrary I loved the camaraderie between all the Decepticons. Shame the Autobots were mostly just bland. Also good on this show for killing off Ginrai. Zone: Cramming dozens of characters into a single episode did not help characterization but at least it had decent animation. It's all just flash though. Also, who the heck can lava kill Devastator when you remember in the Constructicons first appearance, they fell into lava but were alive and well in the next season no worse for wear. What the hell? Robots In Disguise: I Enjoyed Sky-Byte and Scourge, but over all was kind of average. Don't have much else to add to that really. Armada: Here we go. Bad animation, inconsistent voice quality, and being very slow. However I have a great appreciation for Hot Shot because of his character arc through out the series. Same with Starscream and the show's unique take on the character. Energon: Fuck Energon. You already know what's wrong with it. (Though to be fair, I felt Scorponok was it's one saving grace) Cybertron: Like Victory, it was an improvement over what came before. Better animation, the kids were useful, and the dub actually fixed a few elements from the original Japanese dub. Though it still had a bunch of continuity errors and stock footage that went on for too long. Also it turned my favorite Armada character, Sideways, into a joke, while regressing Hot Shot's character development from Armada, the thing that made him my favorite character for the overall Unicron Trilogy. Beast Wars II: The most recent review and I can sum that up by saying its an amalgamation of all the negative qualities of most of the above shows, but also a lot of plot elements from good Transformers shows are similar to some of the things that happen in this show. Doing this one last ended up being a great way to book end my look at the Japanese Transformers shows.

I’m in shock and awe that for a while I knew about Beast Wars II and Neo cause the IDW’s take on them but I never looked into the show. Resulting in me overlooking these amazing OP’s. Yes, dub is usually terrible compared to sub. But there are rare cases of where the dub is just as good as sub, some examples I can give are Bleach, Cowboy Bebop, DBZ, Tri-gun, Panty & Stocking, Kill la Kill, Gurren Lagann, and My Hero academy, but those are just the few. But the even rarer cases where the dub is even better than the sub and where I think the show needs to be watched it in are anime like DBZ, Cowboy Bebop, Tri-Gun, And Panty & Stocking. Those anime where I think they NEED to be watched in dub, especially Cowboy Be-Bop and Panty Stocking, those shows are best watched in English, it feels right.
