@MrJobocan3 жыл бұрын
One thing I'll note about the sounds, this might come up in later episodes if you do these again. Basically the Famicom has access to sound options that the NES doesn't. If you look at cartridges for NES games, you'll notice there's no pins in the middle of the connector, while Famicom cartridges do. These pins, in the Famicom, would link to a chip that allows for more sound layers if the game itself had a special chip for extra sound channels. The Famicom Disk System has some extra sound channels built-in, so Zelda 2 takes advantage of it (as did several others like Castlvania 2, Zelda 1 and some more). Castlevania 3 had a special chip which allowed for 3 more sound channels, and Megami Tensei II (amongst others) had a chip that allowed 4 to 8 more sound channels.
@TemmiePlays3 жыл бұрын
zelda 1 and 2 on famicom used the famicom disk drive, that's why they have superior sound, llol.

Also there's more expansion chips for the Famicom, like Sunsoft's 5B for Gimmick!, Konami's VRC7 which added 6 FM channels for Lagrange Point, that makes the Famicom sound like a Sega Genesis(MegaDrive), and Nintendo's MMC5 which added 2 pulse channels. Saddly, the American and European NES didn't have support for these kinds of expansions, like the FDS.

I'm glad the overseas version got the changes it did, there's little the Japanese version has over it. The animated water/lava is nice, and the Japanese battle theme is kinda cool (still prefer the overseas one), but everything else was just refined in the overseas release, which makes sense considering it released a year or two later. It's not like today when games often release around the same time internationally. The differences in sound effects mentioned ("goopy" noises, chat sounds, barrier being dispelled, etc.) are because the Famicom Disk System had some extra sound channels that the regular NES did not. That's why they don't cut parts of the music like overseas release.

"Television has traditionally been the most common source of seizures in PSE. For people with PSE, it is especially hazardous to view television in a dark room, at close range, or when the television is out of adjustment and is showing a rapidly flickering image (as when the horizontal hold is incorrectly adjusted on analog television sets). *Modern digital* television sets that cannot be maladjusted in this way and which *refresh the image on the screen at very high speed present less of a risk* than older, analog television sets." - Wikipedia "Around 1 in 100 people has epilepsy and of these people, around 3% have photosensitive epilepsy." *"What is unlikely to be a photosensitive trigger?"* "Digital TV and plasma screens. Adjusting the brightness down on some screens can be helpful if you have photosensitive epilepsy." "Modern computer or TV screens do not flicker, or have a very high flicker frequency. Flatscreen monitors, such as laptops, have a liquid crystal display ( LCD) that does not flicker, so are even less likely to trigger seizures." epilepsysociety.org.uk/photosensitive-epilepsy

@@theonlybilge i wouldn't say that just because its "not likely" doesn't mean the same as "Can't happen at all" most seizers themselves aren't fatal but in rare cases they are and its better to have as few as possible and flashing can affect other things as well so might as well be safe and not sorry. You're right but i don't think throwing facts like this out helps people who have had seizures watching youtube before. (approx 2,338,439 worldwide have photosensitivity if i did things right. rare doesn't exactly mean the number of people that has something is "small")

5:48 and 13:04 Epilepsy (flashing lights) warning. ...This is why I'll never be able to play this game, as I've suffered from epileptic seizures before. While most KZbin channels tend to slow down footage of flashing lights or warn people that said unedited footage is approaching, a lot of them seem to consistently forget to do either one of those things for Zelda II. ...I'm sure some people would make a "Zelda II is forgettable" joke, but that's kinda missing the point. The video was still interesting, and I like the idea that this new series is going for, but a warning of some sort, as other users have pointed out, would have been nice.

When the truth is that you're spending $20 a year to play video games online and not these old NES games these titles are more like a bonus. That's how I see it at least. Actually, the sound differences are so vast because the disk system had an additional sound chip with lots of different custom waveforms, in addition to the classic pulse wave + triangle wave + noise + shitty sample from the NES, which is also why Zelda 1 sounds so different in many places. But in Zelda 1 the power of the Disk System audio shines quite nicely, including the original version of that one song Kondo made in a single night right before release. You can tell that in Zelda 2 they probably ran out of time or resources and took advantage of regional versions to polish up many things That boss facing the camera, maybe they did that because they didn't have time to program it to face the player properly. Also Volvagia in the original follows a simple to program parabolic trajectory, while in the other it stays afloat probably with a timer. BUT they couldn't properly fix the lava and water. Great video! Keep them region breaks coming, it's an interesting concept, and very professional in presentation!

I think some of these changes might be due to the hardware limitations on the NES. The animated water and battle music seem that way to me. The famicom could support more sound channels, and had more RAM iirc. So it could animate water and have music with more instruments.
@ShadowDragoon0042 жыл бұрын
I figured most of the music/sound effect changes were due to the missing sound channels on the NES. It's pretty well documented that the FDS had two extra sound channels, and in some games it made a HUGE difference in the audio quality.

Very nice episode. Nice to know that the US version was more of a Deluxe edition than a stripped down version. I do like some of the original SFX, Dark King's tomb, and mouthless link, but it does feel like the overseas version is the definitive version, and better matches a perfect ethereal Form of Zelda 2. Though I wish there was a romhack that'd let us mix and match the differences. But I'm glad the first episode didn't make me depressed. I'm so use to regional changes being insulting and disgustful and completely disregard video games as an art that I forget that sometimes these changes do perfect a game.
