I lived in Toyama for 8 years and I can say with certainty it is one of the most (if not the most) beautiful prefecture(s) in Japan. Explored Kurobe Gorge and also visited Shirakawa Go with almost the same traditional houses with Ainokura during the autumn before I headed to Takayama for a day hike to Chubu Sangaku National Park. Main cities have lots of things to offer but it was the best decision I made during my trip to Japan to explore this part. These places are all so beautiful in person. Will definitely go back and add Tateyama Kurobe Alpine route to my itinerary.

Then you have to cry again, in around mid october to the end of november, the slope behind the Kurobe dam turned red, yellow and green. And if you want to see what a 9 meter tall snow wall looks like, you have to come back in April.

Nice part of Japan. I spent a lot of time there on a project , way back in 2001 and 2002 . The snow road is amazing. They open the road at end of April or May. The snow is up to 20 meters deep.

I preferred SHIRA KAWA Go village, rather than AinoKura ...In fact, I never saw AinoKura, but, I have seen some nice photos of ShiraKawaGo in the winter and have visited it with all the snow.. Just Google it. ShiraKawaGo is the biggest town.
