I've been a Progressive Rock/Metal fan for decades. These guys are unbelievable. I've watched everything from King Crimson, Genesis, Yes, Rush, and many others. Dream Theater is the most fun and impressive to watch and listen to. Just look at Myong mirror Pettruci chord by chord and the speed of both of them. Flawless playing through the entire concert. They are truly the greatest ever.
@jskypercussion3 жыл бұрын
Technically impressive, but after a while it gets boring run after run and eventually becomes uninspiring to the point where there is no distinction or creativity of musicality. I have seen Dream Theater many times and always the same boredom kicks in after a while, I love technicality, but I love musicality as well. Yes, ELP and King Crimson posess both, Dream Theater never mastered the musicality department like the others have. And to me I gig them harshly on that and why to me they were never a complete perfect band. Now in terms of their technical playing, they are a perfect band, but going back to what I was saying about that fine level balance, DT is not the perfect complete Progressive band.
@mustafakp86943 жыл бұрын
Add to your list Porcupine tree : ) The most underrated band
@AngryCalvin2 жыл бұрын
@mustafa kp. I really like Porcupine Tree especially when they are live. Actually they are the only band I have collected live albums from. I like their studio material but... Their acoustics and atmospheric display are far superior on their live shows.
@hectora65162 жыл бұрын
Have you heard Babymetal Tales of the Destinies? I know is not for everyone but if you like progressive give it a chance.
@jrgilbert2 жыл бұрын
@@jskypercussion I couldn't disagree more. They do go off on musical tangents and for the cynical they label it self indulgence, but they have plenty of compositions that are just 'songs' if you will. I have never considered them boring. Boring to me it's today's metal where nearly every band sounds like the flavor of the day. All those progressive bands you mention...have their signature sound and style. Dream Theater managed to find their signature sound and style. I think they have a perfect mix of the technical virtuosity and the heart and soul of songs where they leave the shredding and riffing on the shelf. Some just refuse to acknowledge it. They only hear the notes open your heart along with your mind.

I don't know if I'm the only drummer to notice it, but Mangini on the guitar and keyboard solo is doing 16th note singles on the cymbals while keeping the time in the snare and bass drum consistenly. That is such a nice addition to this song played live. I freaking love it.

Of course it's hard to play but when you know how to play it properly and you repeat it over and over again, it doesn't seem that hard. For example, i personally think this whole song is easier (as a drummer) than the intro of the count of Tuscany. Only because i played it more than a hundred times and for the CoT i'm still like "whaaaat".

I saw and met these men in Detroit on Friday at the Royal Oak Music Theater, what an amazing display of talent and human ingenuity. It is strange to separate the real person from the idea of who a person is in your mind when you admire them from afar. I can not say enough about how nice all of them were and how they put themselves out there to meet people after playing some of the most complicated music ever written for 2 1/2 hours straight. These people are such a blessing to have on this God forsaken chunk of rock.

Hey, just some stupid stuff to cheer with everyone. I'm a drummer, and I basically learned all my basics listening to Portnoy, he basically was my god in my teens. Now, here's what I really want to say. I just LOVE that Mike Mangini has such a "musical" respect for Portnoy that he plays HIS EXACT PART. Like, note for note. He knows fans WANT to hear specifically this, and obviously he could have made this tune his own, he's got more than enough skill to do something new and amazing with this tune. But I think he thouroughly thought about it, and ended up like "Ok, it's one of DT's signature tunes, Portnoy's hand is all over it and you know what ? I'm gonna play EXACTLY what he plays on the record". Just for that, you gotta love that dude. That's all for me, I hope you are all having the best time of your life

I'm not a DT fan; just dropped in to enjoy the video and noticed some comments about the drumming, so I checked out another video of DT playing this piece live with Mike Portnoy on drums. As an impartial listener, I have to give Mangini the benefit of the doubt here because he didn't compose it, and it's being presented with an orchestra which changes things. While Mike Portnoy could play drums on this tune with swagger while adjusting his glasses and mugging for the camera, I suspect that even he might reel it in a little for this kind of gig. Either way, without the original drummer the piece is going to change, and Mangini plays drums with incredibly good skill. I'm sure that a DT song with the drumming composed by Mangini would communicate more of his own style.
