One or two years ago, I watched a documentary about the Japanese Yakuza. Much to my surprise, a former police inspector commented that the Yakuza wasn't the worst criminal organization in Japan. As the Yakuza grew weaker, due to in fighting and especially tougher restrictions and police actions, the former police inspector said that nothing was done to combat the foreign mafias, like the Chinese triads. According to the former police inspector, the Japanese government and police treated the Yakuza like they were Chinese triads while turning a blind eye to the actual Chinese triads themselves. If that is true, Japan hasn't become any safe from the demise of the Yakuza. Quite the contrary, since the Yakuza operated mostly under the law (building companies, gambling business) apart from its criminal activities.

As someone who has a tabletop roleplaying character who is a kitsune that rose to power within the Yakuza after fighting in WW2, this was an incredibly helpful overview of some of the things he would have experienced, and has definitely pointed me towards more things to read up on. Thank you for this video. I already had some knowledge of WW2, and of the Sengoku period (important with my character's name and ancestry), but the rest I was somewhat fuzzy on.

The Yakuza is very important for keeping the peace in Japan. They are very good at keeping other gangs out and preventing terrorists from doing harm. The police won’t admit it but they work with the yakuza because they do things that the cops can’t.
