Jarlath's voice reminds me sometimes of Paul Brady.... Great musician who dares to walk beside traditional paths! Keep up the good work!

I caught this on the Radio 2 playlist, and wow! Blew my head away. I do like a little bit of folk, as it tends to plough the darker furrows of life, and today's pop is just too me-me-me and happy-happy at the moment. For someone who gravitates towards instrumental electronic dance, this flicks so many switches, production-wise. If this is where folk is heading, consider me on the train. Amazing piece of musicianship by all, and LOVE the production. Depeche Mode could have been assisting!

Holy crap, I love this! First heard the song sung by Kate Rusby, and it's lovely, but this is phenomenal.

Fantastic singer and piper. Very reminiscent of Paul Brady when he was turning out his best work :) Incidentally, it was nice to see that the person who uploaded this is called Somhairle MacDonald, as my brother is named Sorley McDonnell, which is essentially the same name.

If this can be encouraging in any sort of way, know that I discovered your music in a cd that I randomly won called "Deisel... Ready..." And I loved it. And this song is very nice. I love how it gets more and more powerful by the minute :)

I think most people only know Nic Jones's iconic version of this song but I enjoyed this version very much. Jarlath has a great voice.
@conanmcdonnell73907 жыл бұрын
I believe anyone familiar with the work of Andy Irvine would also be familiar with his version of the song. It's found in the Sam Henry collection as Farewell Ballymoney but the origins are probably much older as it relates to songs from around the 17th century. Of course, most songs Nic Jones turns his hand (and voice) to are iconic ;)

Guess Andy Irvine's version is also nice. On the album Rainy sundays ...windy dreams. ....early Andy

it's actually "by a metal of high degree", this is about a man who realises his lover has been abducted by aliens and replaced with a robot. he tricks her into drinking human wine, which can't be converted into energy by her internal engine, and she dies. that's why he says "farewell metal molly" towards the end, before he leaves for the US to battle the robot aliens at Roswell New Mexico. true story.

i don't understand a single thing he's saying but it is truly amazing!
@4Mr.Crowley22 жыл бұрын
Really? “for a faint-hearted soldier never gained a battlefield…” He is singing about his girl, Molly, who betrayed him for a lad of “higher degree” (more money etc). He leaves for America at the end of the song since he is heartbroken and is seeking a new life. Is it that difficult to comprehend? Compared to the hideously auto-tuned and digitally manipulated singers of today’s pop music this sounds extremely clear and the lyrics are pronounced with precise diction. If you really “don’t understand a single thing he’s saying” (he is singing in English and his accent isn’t even thick) look up the lyrics as they are essential to the meaning of the song.

Hello, what is this musical instrument's name, the one that looks like a flute ?
@sarahfaber33268 жыл бұрын
He plays a low whistle - it's a bass tin whistle (and sounds lovely) that comes in specific keys (I think this one is in D). You can also get Irish flutes, which are played to the side like a Classical flute, and they're usually make of wood.
@saranommusic6 жыл бұрын
Sarah Faber it's a low d probably a chieftains and flutes are usually made out of wood or plastic I forget which type

Weird and ugly? It sounds like a clock, which is beautiful given the theme of the song and its driving pace
