How would you like to take a vacation that lasted 3 to 12 months? I think we can all agree that taking an extended period of time off work sounds like a dream life. But there's one problem- you're not super-rich with millions of dollars in the bank. Luckily having millions of dollars in the bank doesn't matter to make this happen.
In this video, I'm going to cover something called a mini-retirement. This is another subset of the Financial Independence Early Retirement community that doesn't get talked about as much as it should.
I know that quitting your job and taking an extended period of time off work sounds insane and scary so in this video, I'm going to help break down all of the details for you. I'll walk you through everything you need to know to be able to take a mini-retirement within the next couple of years.
Some people also refer to this as a sabbatical, but I prefer mini-retirement. Either way, you can call it whatever you want. They're both the same thing with different names.

Disclaimer: This video is for entertainment purposes only. Everyone's situation is different so do your own research before making any decisions with your money. If you need help then contact a Certified Financial Fiduciary before trying anything that is mentioned in this video. I prefer a Fiduciary financial advisor that charges an hourly fee as opposed to an ongoing fee based on a % of your portfolio. Always remember that incentives determine the type of advice they give you so one that charges an hourly fee is less likely to be problematic.

That’s crazy taking a year break every other year. I wonder how their interview processes go- im sure that’s a red flag for potential employers seeing a person’s resume who doesn’t stay at a company for longer than a year. Unless you’re just contracting everywhere. I find it hard to believe hiring managers would want to take someone on knowing they don’t plan on staying long term
@JarradMorrow

Definitely a different way to approach the whole work life thing. From what I gathered in the book these people would take on contracting work, seasonal work, and odd jobs. Others would just leave gaps in their resume. Like you said, I'd imagine you can only do this for so long until it started to negatively impact your money making abilities.

You make a great point. I would agree that many professions won't see this favorably. Mine would not, certainly, and as someone involved in hiring, I wouldn't hire that person either. No ROI on that person. True professions require you to remain relevant in industry developments and connections (especially healthcare research and academics where I work). Once you leave, be prepared to remain out. You will not get back in. It is what it is.

From your perspective on the hiring side- What are your thoughts on someone just doing this for 1 year though? I can't imagine hopping out of the work force for 12 months, one time, would be detrimental to a career.

Just take a year off every 7 years. Then you can say it's a Sabbath year. It's really works you get rested and become more productive on the next 6 years.

Right after high school, I moved to Norway and lived in a dairy farm on a fjord from 2000-2001. I created a travel website so my family could follow my life before the term blog was founded. I was a good student and college bound for sure, so thankfully my parents supported the decision to delay college a year. Living in Europe changed my life and view of the world, and I made great lifelong friends. The government actually provided me a private language tutor and allowed to attend classes at the local high school where students study until 19 years of age, so I aligned socially with the local students. Norway also had a custom for students to attend a folk high school before university where they live in a dorm setting similar to a summer camp where they live Norway music, folk songs and hike the mountains. I miss the life experience pretty much every day, where people live first and work second. Later in engineering school, I applied for a co-op to work in Prague, where I traveled, made friends and visited my second family in Norway. I was couch surfing around Europe before couch surfing was coined and way before the practice was capitalized. I had many people question my alternative approach and delay to starting college but I would not trade it for the world. I checked off some major life experiences early in life.

My husband retired from the military at age 49. He went to law school while retired, so we got 3 years of experience with what life looks like with his retirement pay. Found out we are really much closer to having what we need to retire than we thought. Crazy what we didn’t know. He’s now a lawyer and we can retire with even better income in 6 years.

Jarrad I used your car savings method and bought my first car 6 months ago. 2013 Chrysler 300S. Starting to save for the next one as well now. Also, I'm into AMC stock now, not sure what your thoughts are on that, but I'm holding, but still maximizing car fund and retirement accounts! Thanks for what you do. Take care bro!

Great video! (welcome back :)). For me, I'm still employed at Google making very good money BUT i moved to 60% time back in April after 9 months of simulating the situation using vacation days. I'm of course losing 40% of my comp but i get so much life back that it was a no brainer decision and I'm super happy with the arrangement so far.

@@JarradMorrow There was a 3 month trial period (ended last week) then evaluation from manager and HR to allow me to continue with no explicit duration. I'm quite happy they allowed me to do that indeed. It's been a life changer. Similar to what you mentioned: my job is not my main priority but i still enjoy it and don't want to stop fully.

Great Videos Jarrad. I have been checking several times a day to see if you uploaded anything. It's good to see you back. I'm considering the idea of doing something like that after I managed to buy a house in cash or after I paid it off that I want to save for along with solar panels Gthermal system and batteries so I don't have utilities and after I have a lot invested as well. And maybe get a elteric car as a daily driver I plan on test driving a Tesla just for the fun of it sense there is a Tesla show room not far from where I live. I probably wouldn't want one as a daily driver though but after I test one I would know if I do but I don't think I would sense I like my mustang a lot I just got but you never know. Are you just starting your mini retirement or did you already start it a little bit ago? I hope this mini retirement goes great for you Jarrad. And I hope you find a job you like after this as well.

Have you looked into Cobra when having dependents? My wife passed away last spring suddenly. I have 2 daughters to care for and and a very demanding corp job - at the time. Cobra was $2,000 per month which i had to do to have time to plan a funeral, care for my daughters and all the months of apptmts, paperwork, financial account changes, etc. Yes, i said months. Not to discourage people, but Cobra extension of a good non high deductible policy + copays and deductibles turned out to be about $30k alone. Add your living expenses on top of that. It was eye opening for me and i am back working after that forced mini-retirement. Yes, i did learn from it. Now i know i will need about $70k minimum per year to support myself and daughters if i were to retire early. My moral of story is healthcare system is immoral in this country.
