Just my opinion: I feel most older teams, especially pre-80s, would struggle to win a series against the modern teams. It's not about the skillset, it's about the newer playbooks, player conditioning and the evolution of the game itself. Also, the fitness of modern players is on a completely different level. To clarify, I am not referring to speed, power or strength. It's the difference in endurance, flexibility, dexterity, etc. While some earlier generations have even played 6-day tests, they didn't have such hectic calendars. Now, players compete in a grueling schedule of diverse cricketing formats that demand a complete lifestyle change and adjustment to the modern world.

2004 Australia Tour of India, Aus won because of the following: 1. Sachin Tendulkar didn't play the first 2 tests and came back into the 3rd post a long break from his infamous Tennis Elbow injury(Yeah, Ricky Ponting didn't play too, but I would rate Sachin's impact in India much much higher than that of Ponting's). 2. 2nd Test Match at Chennai 5th day got washed out. India would have most certainly chased it down(200 odd on the last day). 3. Terrible umpiring which went against India. First over of the tour, Justin Langer was not given LBW. It was plumb out. Many such instances. 4. Parthiv Patel's terrible wicket keeping skills. He dropped way too many catches which even pissed off Rahul Dravid in the slips. 5. Ganguly and Harbhajan choosing not to play the 3rd test at Nagpur since the wicket had a green top 🙄 Australia were undoubtedly brilliant, but the above points went terribly against India.

It’s unfortunate that in India, where the cricket team is currently so Invincible and the sport enjoys immense popularity, only a few people truly understand the game. While I have around 60-70 friends and known ones who watch cricket, only about 2 of them have a deep understanding of how the game is played. Most watch cricket simply because it’s popular, with many only tuning in for T20 matches due to its fast pace. There are only few people in our country who understands how cricket is being played rest of them are just fighting about how their favourite player is the best player of all time.

If I just do a simple math at your example, 2 out of 60 friends having deep knowledge then that’s 3.33% of the sample population and if you extrapolate that to the entire population of India or even 50% that would give you 2.33 crore people with deep cricketing knowledge. That’s a lot of people for cricket as a sport anyways, some countries don’t even have a population of that size. If you want that population to be 20% then that would be such a waste of resources on just one sport.

In 2012 India lost mostly because of an ageing team. The team was in transition with Tendulkar, Gambhir, Sehwag, Yuvraj etc all past their prime and new talent like Virat and Pujara didn't have experience. Combined with England's spin duo of Swann and Panesar cost India that series. One such time may come in next year when Virat, Rohit, Ashwin, Jadeja will be done and if some good side comes India may lose at home.

The most legit team has to be Aus 2004. They have all the ingredients to win against this prime Indian side. In order to win in India, you need a batsman who frustrate bowlers by not giving wicket for longer spells and are great players of spin e.g. D Martin, Younis Khan, Cook, Khwaja. You need individual match winners like Gillespie, McGrath, Warne. I still remember how Gillespie and McGrath troubled Dravid in that series and by which we couldn’t draw the matches. Eng 2012 was a solid team but legendary Indian side was already old and jaded. Also feel this Indian team can beat 1999 Pak team fairly easily in India.

I have been thinking about this for a while now that no team can beat India at home in tests at home and maybe even away. India is so balanced that they can recover themselves from the most difficult situations in test cricket as in tests you don't need to win just once, like in T20is or ODIs, you need to win session after session or win so dominately in one session that the game is over and you just can't do that to the indian team. The same begali team that was playing wow cricket against Pakistan beating them by nearly an innings, were completely helpless against India. I think Pakistan currently should be happy rather than disappointed that India dont play billatareals against them because this Indian team would humiliate them at home, away, or neutral venues. In conclusion, the Indian team currently is the best test team.

A series victory in 2000, a good fight in 2004, and brilliant displays in 2008 & 2010 showcase their resilience. Remember Amla's 2010 series, where he scored huge hundreds in each of his innings, including a remarkable double ton !! Also, there were notable centuries from Amla, ABD and McKenzie in 2008. It is a shame that WTC final is just 1 test match. This is unfair. WTC final should always be best of 3 test match. England is a rainy country. Imagine on the WTC final there is rain and couple of sessions being washed out. Also overcast conditions can favour the side bowling. India lost first WTC final to NZ because there was rain during that final and NZ bowlers used the best the precipitation because they were bowling then. Rain had played a highly significant role for India loss at the first WTC final. This is not a lame excuse. This is 100 percent truth and fact. But I totally agree the second WTC final between aussies and India, Australia outplayed India for sure. There is no rain this time for the whole 5 days. So it fair. I believe WTC final should always be best of 3 test match instead of just 1 test match deciding the fate of a team which for which it took 2 years to reach the WTC final. @@lj4daniel70 If you're trying to find the best team in every tournament then the world cup should also be a best of 5 or best of 3. The point of a final is that whoever plays better on the day wins. Including Ben stokes who is walking wicket in India. Put Blundell at 6 or in honesty better spin player Rizwaan as keeper at 6 and open with Khwaja also Southeee is far better test bowler in India than Rabada. Keshav Maharaj is debatable I would add a SL/ Bangladesh spinner may be Prabath Jaysurya or Shakib who can bat a bit, may be get in Steve Smith over Mitchell. Also Head in India for test doesn't give danger as opener like in shorter format plus never tested. Travis Head/Dimuth Karunaratne Usman Khwaja Kane Root Smith Rizwan (wk) plays spin better than lot of batters Shakib/Rashid/ keshav Maharaj (bowlers who can bat) Prabhath Jaysurya (current form) Pat Cummins (can bat a bit plus Captain?) Tim Southee (fantastic tailender who can hit sixes)/ Trent Boult (just for left arm option) Starc has shit numbers, Shaheen doesn't tand a chance, Rabada also shit numbers. Ben stokes useless in India specially against Ashwin and Bumrah Blundell left hander Ashwin can eat, Hazelwood is good case but Southee can bat a bit. Mehedi Hasan Miraj is someone to throw but lack of experience, Similarly Mushfakir Rahim makes case for WK but weak numbers against India. English batters can't play spin expect for Root, Rachin Ravindra hasn't played yet so not included, Devon Conway out of form, Babar Azam doesn't seem confident against this Indian Attack. SA batters too weak against spin. So yeah pretty much this top 15.

Now that 2013 or 2014 England series in India will become a Case Study😊 How did England beat India in India in that series? I still remember that day, we went to see the test match 2nd day in Mumbai Wankhede, where India were some around 240/6 after day 1 and they lost 4 wickets very quickly in 2nd day Morning. Zaheer hit one or two sixes I guess. Then afternoon and evening session was purely dominated by Cook and Peterson, they batted the whole day, I guess they lost only 2 wickets on that day and they both were unbeaten. They won that match, they won the series later.

Only one option, Pakistan of 1999, they had a decent batting line-up and a bowling unit which might be better than India's on their days. Yeah that's true . But look at wt20 for example this man is having economy of about 5-6. Against pak -rizwan+babar wicket at most imp time Against sa -top 2 batters + last over against jansen Taking wickets is good but there are bowlers who atleast give runs and give bad balls . This one just don't give loose balls so that pressure could be released. I used to think that he isjust a yorker specialist , a one trick pony but the way he bowls outswinger from that awkward action is just amazing.

If we are talking about their respective peaks Kohli is as good as anyone in India(Sachin included), Rohit averages literally 80+ in India which was second only to Bradman in terms of home average at his peak too. Jaiswal is anyday better than everyone apart from Sehwag too. Pant is our best wk batter and equal to VVS easily. Jaddu and Ash are any day better than any other 7 or down batter in the past teams. The only places where the previous batters win is Dravid is light years better than Gill right now. Along with the fact that this bowling line up is miles ahead of previous gen. Bumrah+Ash+Jaddu+Shami+Siraj/Axar is anyday better than Kumble+Bhajji+Zaheer+(srinath or Irfan).
@swapnilthorat4648

Bro pant can be the X factor where past team struggled to find a keeper batter but Ash and Jaddu won't be hard work for Sachin, Dravid and VVS. Look at stats of Warne and Murali 2 undoubtedly greatest spinners of all time were just avrage routine bowlers for these stalwarts, Kohli and Rohit has higher prime but yeah Sachin and Dravid could play session by session and are brilliant spin batters specially off spin of Ashwin. May be this 'Bumrah vs Dravid' and Sachin now that would have been competition to pay the money for. Also Kumble and Bhajji vs Kohli and company didn't underestimate those 2 giants. It all comes down to current pacers vs Big 4 back then and what kind of day Pant has against either spinner he is sole difference between the 2 teams! In all honesty Kohli is miles behind Sachin even he is far from Dravid in Test we shouldn't get started about Rohit in test cricket!

Absolutely amazing video and it was very enlightening to learn about other great teams from the past. One aspect that doesn't get talked about often is the quality of fielding. These days, you rarely see the Indian team dropping simple catches, and more often than not, they take the half chances as well. That means they have to take just 20 wickets as opposed to 30-35 (including the dropped catches).

That team only drew the 1999 series. And Chennai test was very close. The issue in that Indian team was that it did not have enough pace battery. That base is also covered now. So the 90s Pak team would compete and lose with this Indian team - like a few teams had competed and lost. Granted the series won't be one sided.

You also forget that Indian batsmen of today themselves cannot play on rank turners like what the greats of Indian cricket (Sachin, Dravid, Laxman, Ganguly) used to. So rank turners are out now, pitches with good bounce and gentle spin is what India thrives on at home.

I think, SL team with Murali, Herath, Sangakara, Mahela, Dilshan, etc. should have been considered as 3rd, 4th or 5th team. The fact that Murali and Herath did not have a good record in India was because they were playing against one of the greatest batting line-up of all time against spin. The recent struggle (I don't think struggle would be the right word) of the Indian batters against quality spin bowling, might actually work in favour of Murali and Herath.

Tbh Pakistan of 1999 is probably the only one I'd legit fear rolling us even now, but if only they have another couple of cheat codes - bring Waqar from 1993-94 (by 1999 he was already past his prime) and be allowed to use bottle caps. The batting was stacked af, I'd especially like to mention Ijaz or Salim Malik - not incredible batters, but temperamentally super effective. And of course, Inzy.

NZ finally have a spin attack that is suited for Indian conditions. Santner is not quick through the air but he kinda knows how to bowl in India. Patel took a 10-fer and Phillips is quick through the air. Ravindra is their 4th spin option. If (a very big if) someone like Williamson touches god and has an away series like Smith in Ashes 2019, NZ can give India a run for their money I don’t see that happening, but it’s the closest that a team can potentially get to in the next couple of years before Ashwin or Rohit retire

I do not see how the duo will be faced by the current batting lineup. Well for the WI they have to face a much much better Indian bowling attack. Better both in the spin and the pace department. It would be a contest and I think they would stand a chance to beat the modern day India team.
