Rishabh Pant hit a six today, which was so massive that it could cost India their shot at one of the greatest comebacks in Test cricket history. Not sure what I mean? Well, watch through till the end.

Similar to the game where a west indian player smashed a ball out of the park and when a replacement ball was ordered, the umpires accidentally, in an attempt to make the ball "old", made it so that the ball would start to reverse.

Same thing happened in 2001 in Ashes match at Leeds when England were chasing a stiff target. 2 quick wickets fell as the ball was jagging around, when Hussain hooked the ball for 6 which got them replaced and the replacement hardly swung. England cantered to a comfortable win in 4th innings target of 315, with Butcher smashing 173*.

I was wondering the same, they blunted the 2nd new ball for 40 odd balls, with Sarfraz's wicket also owing to his impatient shot. But I just thought the ball that was replaced after the 6 was a brand new ball again, which effectively ruined their efforts on the prior ball and hence, the excessive movement and eventual collapse.

What kind of day has it been. Aaron Sorkin India has: (1,2) The World's best openers (3,4) Incredibly driven (one absent) (5,6) Highly impactful, one of which is the world's greatest wicketkeeper-batter. (7,8) Accurate, each with two good balls (9,10) A servicable swing bowler, a servicable seam bowler (absent), a unique and good left hand wristie. (11) Bumrah. That said, Rohit did fail as a captain. (1) He didn't open with KL Rahul and Kuldeep Yadav: India's most capable blockers. (2) He didn't use Ashwin's new ball and Bumrah's reverse swing in the 2nd and 4th innings. (3) He didn't calm down Jaiswal. (4) He used Ashwin's old ball too much. Rohit does give in to panic. He gave Shami the new ball in Ahmedabad. India was incredibly unlucky too. False shots/Wickets was insane for Indian bowling. Indian batting had incredible cloud cover and darkness and Indian bowling had lots of sunlight. Rohit and Kohli's dismissals were extremely unlucky. Pant was injured, which slowed him and SarKh down. 1) Rachin's batting was absolutely masterclass, and they just couldn't get him out. Kohli-like decisiveness, Smith-like execution. Shiver me timbers. 2) New Zealand's seam bowling were miles better than India's in both innings. 3) GP got a few good balls in. These three things and a returning KW are the only things that will challenge India. What a bloody great test match. Also, JK there are two things I do object to: 1) KL Rahul has incredible talent but a hopeless temperament. That is incredibly self-evident, right from his reaction to getting out at 199, or hitting the last ball six at Chepauk and it is for that that Indians can't stand him and unless he learns consistency, don't patronize in expecting us to forgive him. 2) Catches do win matches. They did in Ind vs Aus 2023 group game (Kohli drop), 2023 final (Rohit), Ind vs Eng 3rd test (Root, 1st), 2024 final (Miller), the last Ind vs Ban (1st, Litton and Shakib) and in this match (1st, Kohli). When chances are rare an incredible catch kills you mentally.

Pitches, Ball condition matter so much to the game that it makes it more or less skeptical. No wonder sports like football flourished. I think the ball must be made to the precision and must not lose their condition being played on and also must inherently support swing and seaming. The ball didn't matter much earlier, it may be the seam!!!

But they were already playing with a new ball. The ball was changed a dew overs back, thats why NZ fast bowlers came back in attck, and India's run rate slowed down as Sarfaraz was taking time to adjust and eventually got out. We can balme it on the change of the ball, but not on Pant's six because it merely just replaced one new ball with another new ball.

Jarrod, am afraid you got it wrong here. Sarfraz played no less than 7 misses with the new ball before he finally got out, as the new ball was taken on time at the end of 80th over. The batting pair including Pant were having a tough time playing and missing quite a few times in that half an hour or so before that six. You said it got soft. That’s not correct, as that monster six was hit on over 86.3, so literally 7th over with that ball. No question of the ball having gone soft in just 6 overs!

this is all hind sight trivial analysis...and one event doesn't impact the game the way this video has been titled as a click bait....there are so many factors at play...sarfaraz did not have to play an unnecessary shot which clearly is his weakest shot on offside and jadeja also played a lose shot...having said that india should have already lost by now if rishabh pant had been run out when he was on 6....and if any of their audacious shots had gone wrong....so best thing is to just watch and enjoy the game without analyzing too much every small little thing...this is some of the best ever cricket being played by young indian cricketers and we should not bother whether they win or lose and just enjoy the ride...

The ball change played a role yes. But, if India had even a half competent batter coming in after sarfraz instead of the useless pack of human jelly that is KLol Rahul, they'd have seen off the new ball and scored more. Duck in the first innings because of his spineless decision to not go to 4. Misses the best part of the pitch in the second dig. Can't hang on and exposes the all rounders to a swinging ball. Averages 30 after 50+ tests. Tell me when to stop...
