@Riteshbabu Allam I agree, thing is the Aussies had their plans (mostly the field positioning) working against him which made it even more difficult for him to score. Yeah he plays dual roles. (i.e make sure the ball gets old enough before he gets out and manage to score runs off the loose deliveries.Also more often than not he ends up doing the former more consistently)The absence of virat had a major impact on the overall state of the game since Rahane and Vihari were forced to follow Pujara as soon as the openers gets out and since they have similar playstyle (I know Rahane can counter-attack at times but he had to be responsible this time around), the trio hence were forced to play Pujara-esque innings. Finally I was disappointed to see that Pujara wasn't quite able to get through the Australian tight field position strategy (credit goes to their ultra-disciplined bowling lineup too) by the end of the series whereas Steven Smith ended up figuring out a way to score runs against Ashwin. PS : Even if Pujara counter attacked (assuming that he managed to execute his shots perfectly all the time) those lines that their Bowlers opted to bowl against him was aggressive and they know that they don't need to change it unless he figured out to sneak singles. Whereas when Smith counter attacked those lines bowled by Ashwin, the bowler didn't have to much options since Smith was able to push the Mid off and mid on back at the boundaries generating opportunity for easy singles.

Pujara had a set target of playing lots of deliveries as possible and tiring the Aussies bowlers and making the ball old. So the likes of pant can later come and capitalize on that. Which I think he succeeded in doing playing over 900+ balls in that series.

Now, this one is really amazing. People always forget to see importance of impact playing number of bowls have on the game. And as a number 3 batsman, often it is his job to play out fairly new ball and give better chance to number 4,5 batsmans to bat against older ball. It would be interesting to see how many balls he faced (or strike rate) betweens 0-25 overs. And same stat for second new ball. I've a feeling that he scores faster facing 2nd new ball. Which is kind of obvious with tired bowlers but would be interesting to see that kind of stat.

Spot on Jarrod - Here's the proof = Its bit long but have a read I am sure few decades form now, some guys like us will talk about this series. Maybe with the help of how'sthat they will see pujara scored 271 at just 34 runs per innings, saying he didn't have a good tour in 2020-21. But what they'll be unaware of is how did these 271 contributed in team's cause. I tried to dig in to know what impact did Puajra leave on this series. Let's have a look at how many overs he encountered while his stay at the crease. 4th test (2nd innings) When he came out to bat Hazlewood - 4 overs Cummins - 3 overs Starc -1 over Lyon -0 overs When he was dismissed Hazlewood -18 overs Cummins - 17.2 overs Starc - 16 overs Lyon - 25 overs 4th test (1st innings) When he came out to bat Hazlewood - 3 overs Cummins - 3.2 overs Starc -2 overs Lyon -0 overs When he was dismissed Hazlewood - 10 overs Cummins - 11 overs Starc - 8 overs Lyon -7 overs 3rd Test (2nd innings) When he came out to bat Hazlewood - 5.1 overs Cummins - 6 overs Starc -6 overs Lyon - 3 overs When he was dismissed Hazlewood - 17.2 overs Cummins - 20 overs Starc - 12 overs Lyon - 32 overs 3rd test (1st innings) When he came out to bat Hazlewood - 10 overs Cummins - 5 vers Starc - 3 overs Lyon - 7 overs When he was dismissed Hazlewood - 20 overs Cummins - 20 overs Starc - 14 overs Lyon - 28 overs 2nd test (1st innings) When he came out to bat Hazlewood - 0 overs Cummins - 0 overs Starc - 1 over Lyon -0 overs When he was dismissed Hazlewood - 6 overs Cummins - 10.4 overs Starc - 3 overs Lyon - 0 overs 1st Test (1st innings) When he came out to bat Hazlewood - 0 overs Cummins - 0 overs Starc - 0.2 overs Lyon - 0 overs When he was dismissed Hazlewood - 12 overs Cummins - 11 overs Starc - 12 overs Lyon - 9.4 overs I know all of us are good at arithmetic from calculating Strike Rates, session run rates to dot ball percentage. But what we can't see on TV is Does Hazlewood want to have another spell? Is Starc going to have same control after steaming in for all day? Can Cummins' body take one last extra effort from him? Are Nathan Lyon's fingers hurting? Almost Every time when Pujara left the ground he made sure that his successor is facing less effective versions of Cummins, Hazlewood, Stark and Lyon. That's what your number 3 is supposed to do in test matches.

Personally problem is not Pujara, he has a set role, plays a certain way and most often than not does it pretty well. It's the partnerships and other players around him that create the problem. If others don't try to be proactive and play at a same pace as Pujara (atleast when Pujara is batting below 50). The scoreboard doesn't move enough and if there is a case when couple of wickets fall along with Pujara, the pressure builds massively on the lower order as the balls are played without enough runs on the board and probably a second new ball within sights. At home it is fine as India score rapidly anyway but sometimes is visible on away tours. Great content by the way! New Sub from now!👍🏼

I've been enjoying these videos. Can you please do a video on some of my favourite topics in cricket: 1.Was Dean Jones being dropped fair as he was still a world class batsman in tests in the 90s? 2.Can you do a piece on whether Vinod Kambli was wasted by the ICCB? IMO, he seemed like he was a better and more stylish batsman than Tendulkar but I've always wondered was it a combination of his recklessness/poor management that basically meant India wasted one of the best talents around that time? 3.Australian Selection Policy and our decline in test batsmen. Apart from Pucovski, it seems like selectors just haven't chosen a decent top order/middle order in a while. I didn't think Khawaja deserved to be dropped. Is the problem the selection policy or Sheffield shield cricket declining? Anyway, Jarrod, your videos are so insightful and great.

Cheteshwar pujara played 86 test match with average of 46 including 18 century and mohammad azharuddin played 99 test with avarage of 45 something including 22 century and with 63 strike rate and pujara strike rate is 40 when i compare these two stats i feel how genious was azhar beacuse he used to come for batting after 3 wickets plus in his bowling attack was more dangerous and green top wicket used to prepare for test matches salute to the legend azhar

Pat Cummins said before the 2020 tour that Pujara was the most difficult batsman he has bowled to, calling him a pain in the back
@PrateekS1411
@PrateekS1411 3 жыл бұрын
I find Pujara funny, in an interview he said he has not given up on his white ball career and has aspirations for the same. But his running is ridiculous and his big hitting is even more pathetic. The IPL money which his peers have earned over the last 8 to 9 IPLs is hurting him. However their skill set is completely different from his. Pujara believes in tiring the bowlers out, his negative gameplay is not going to fetch him any money. It is time he applies his mind towards scoring runs rather than playing for survival. Plus his record in England and SA is dismal for an experienced top order batsman, unless he improves he is likely to fail in the coming tours and will have to make way for the younger lot.

If Pujara gets 0 off 100 and then gets 50 off the next 100 balls, he's done his job of wearing out the new ball as well as of scoring runs. But. If he gets less than ten off 50 and then gets out, he's failed both. It's a fine line and it's his own style. But Virat has an argument as well. There needs to be at least one batsman with a slight attacking mindset. Because you can't allow the bowlers to settle, or the good ball that gets you out will become even more imminent. THAT IS WHY India have decided to pair up attackers and defenders on the crease. Promoting Pant. Rahane playing both roles based on the situation. Pujara doing his thing. Gill, Pant and Rohit doing their thing. It's why India have batted so well for 7 innings in this test series. I'm not gonna mention what happened in the one innings they didn't :-(

Actually I think it was needed by the team. Last time Virat was around so Pujara was confident and had a nice strike rate. But Virat was not around and there was no other player apart from Rahane who could have stayed in the middle for longer time. And due to him facing so many balls in the Brisbane test, India had chance to decide midway through the innings to either go for the draw or for the win- he was an anchor where Gill and Pant tried to win it for India.
@JarrodKimberYT
@JarrodKimberYT 3 жыл бұрын
I think Pujara's strike rate would have gone up if he'd made some bigger scores. I don't think he was consciously scoring slower because of Virat. I think the bowling was better than last time, and he was trying to do a similar thing but just didn't make it that far.

@@JarrodKimberYT but imagine the kind of pressure after getting all out for 36. I mean he was one of the senior most guy in the team along with Rahane- openers failed to score big, no proper contribution from no. 5&6- and apart from that it was the deadly attack of Cummins and Hazlewood. Hadn't he batted slowly and "ate" so many balls Australia had a definite chance to take all the wickets on day 5 of last 2 tests.

Hey @Jarrod Kimber, it would be great if you can statistically analyze how do players such as Pujara and Azhar Ali that have massive dot ball percentages, impact the performance of batsmen (especially attacking batsmen) at the other end. Their sturdiness can liberate the partners sometimes as seen in Brisbane, or I guess hinder the flow, which I feel sometimes happens with Kohli when he plays with Pujara. As an indicator, Kohli's 0-50 conversion in tests is also not as impressive as his rest of the records.
