2022 and before : how to download RAM ? 2023 : how to downlaod VRAM ?
@johndoh5182 Жыл бұрын
Here's my beef with KZbinrs that keep bitching about VRAM. You aren't the one who has to sell the product. Adding more VRAM makes a product more expensive, and it's more than just adding the cost of the extra chips. You should CERTAINLY know that space in a laptop is at a premium. Adding more chips means more real estate is needed on a PCB, more runs are needed in the PCB, more power is needed, so better power support and I'm sure I'll miss issues. The ONE thing for sure is if KZbinrs affect purchasing of less costly laptops regardless of sales of more expensive models, these companies will stop making less expensive laptops and KZbinrs are directly responsible then for starting to price consumers out of that lower end market. I'll take this to both AMD and Nvidia who BOTH chose to make low end GPUs for desktop with 8GB VRAM. You don't think they understand their market? You don't think they understand what the performance is of their products? They're not making a 4060 or 7600 for 4K or even 2K gaming. If a person CHOOSES to TRY to mess with settings so much that they can use a low end GPU for 2K gaming, OK???? But that's not AMD's or Nvidia's concern. Their concern is they can sell a low end product into a low end market, and just because there will be a small handful of games where you have to adjust graphics settings down to play them with a GPU with 8GB VRAM, it doesn't make the product BAD. It only means there's a handful of games where you have to adjust graphics settings. If I can buy a BRAND NEW 7600 that released at $60 USD less than a 6600 did, that's a pretty good thing IMO and with the 7600 being about 30% faster than the 6600 which is a pretty typical gen on gen uplift at the lower tier, I'm happy. With AMD in particular I know at some point that 7600 will drop in price and it will be a FANTASTIC buy at something like $230 - $240, and it only has to drop about $30 - $40 USD to be in that range. I ALSO know that AMD will improve their drivers over time and I'm going to get another 5 - 10% performance out of that product. In fact this is much better than RDNA 2 was at launch for price/perf and I don't care about how AMD puts an older gen product on sale because NO COMPANY can price a new product like a discounted old product and continue to exist, or they can never discount products because that's a slow move to a product that has such a low price the company can't make it and make money. Try following the math on that one. Start at a product that's $300 USD. Put a 25% discount on it. Make a new gen, price that new product the same as the DISCOUNTED old gen it's replacing. It's now $225 USD as a new product. When it's about to be replaced with a new gen, put it on discount for 25% off. NOW release a new gen and price it at the discounted price of the old gen. How much is it now? It's about $170 USD. Yeah I think that's about the time you go bankrupt. It only took 2, maybe 3 generations to bankrupt yourself using a 25% discount on a product that's about to be replaced with a new gen and saying the new gen should be priced like a discounted product. I like most of your content, I wish you'd stay out of the bitching game that Steve from HDWU, Steve from GN and a handful of other people get into which is often sensationalism and nothing else. It's low brow, appealing to the people who like to bitch about whatever, and it puts me off because it's SO subjective that I can't say the information has any value to it. And beating up on these companies only ensures their products will cost more over time because they'll over design them so the main KZbin channels have nothing to BITCH about.

4:15 With Pascal and Turing, the full-powered versions of those GPUs were very close to the desktop models, which is why Nvidia removed the M designation from the laptop GPUs. But Ampere threw that out the window, and Nvidia only required laptop OEMs to add the GPU power limit because consumers complained (and it could have been lawsuit worthy because of misleading advertising). I bought a gaming laptop for when a spend a few weeks regularly outside my home elsewhere. Usually, you know upfront that you are not going to have desktop performance, even if the GPU model number matches the one in your PC. It is also quite pricey compared to the desktop experience. But on the other hand, with modern laptops you are much more efficient, and it's amazing what you can pack into 15 inches and less. Some games, that don't rely on high FPS, can actually run for a 1.5 - 2 hrs easily on battery. Nowadays, I am also using it to do remote work. But overall, I think, buying a laptop as your only gaming computer is only really making sense if you are constantly on the move or don't have much space at home.

21:17 gaming on a laptop without it being plugged in is unusual. But there are many occasions in which you can plug in but you're not home. I agree that this is mostly a niche issue, in so much as most people do not travel for most of their life or most of the year. Even there there are occasions, where you might benefit from a very small factor system and carry as part of your luggage the monitor. For the most part, people who live in situations like dorms, or go to coffee shops or libraries, are the only other people that I can think of truly would benefit from a laptop that's for gaming. But that's not a niche portion of the market, a lot of students need to have that portability. But the portability is not about gaming on battery, it's about being able to take your whole device in your backpack

I bought my first gaming laptop in 2020 and at the time it was a fairly decent spec (i7 10750h and RTX 2070 Max-Q) and it was absolutely great for high refresh 1080p gaming even up until now. So that's about 3 years. Bare in mind when I bought it 30 series was only a few months away so if I had waited a bit longer then I could expect an extra year and a half out of it. I found I mainly used it docked ar a desk with keyboard, mouse and monitor and only really occasionally used it for gaming in my campervan. I decided this year to build a whole new desktop and its been incredible, sure im giving up the portability but the gaming experience has been incredible as I've gone up a resolution to 1440p fully ray traced HDR gaming but it's still nice to have the laptop as a backup and portable machine. In an ideal world a reasonable Dell XPS style system would make more sense due to decent battery life and work ergonomics whilst also being able to game a bit on the side

Great points. Another I'd add is that is that it depends on how often you play games on day one. Many games released across the last two years or so have been half baked in terms of optimisation eg Hogwarts Legacy and Last of Us Part 1. Many titles now benefit from patches that reduce vram use AND boost the visual quality of textures across configurations (particularly medium.and low). All that to say, best not to gauge vram being the limitation based on day 1 performance.

It's still holding up very well. It is a laptop purches by my work for remote work. I was able to finish some projects that the 1080ti in my desktop at work were struggling with precisely because I was running out of vram. I was using it for editing for about 2 years because our new edit suite project kept getting delayed until this year when I built a 4090 rig. So now I don't edit on it unless I am working remotely, but it still holds up for sure. And for gaming it definitely holds up fine.

Laptops definitely have a place. Used have a gaming rig, however since I got kids now just don’t have the space for it anymore so I’m my case a laptop is perfect. The performance levels aren’t the same (technically), but honestly as someone who has had top of the line Laptops Alienware and Razer and top of the end gaming rigs, once you start playing the games you really can’t notice the difference. After the initial ten minutes you just get used to it. For example I’ve played Mass Effect, Witcher 3 and Skyrim consistently over the last decade on nearly every platform imaginable (PC laptop, PC Desktop, PS3, Xbox 360, PS5 and Series x). But Because the games are good, and performance is decent on every platform I haven’t noticed a difference. Currently have a Blade 16 4080, and PS5 and Steam Deck. Play whenever I get the chance on whatever is easiest at the time and outside of what spot in the house I’m playing it really makes no difference to me.

Honestly, perfectly said. As long as a game isn't dipping below 60 fps (and honestly even 30 fps can be fine, especially with a smaller screen), the experience really isn't going to be crushed by that much. Most games look totally fine on lower settings, and certainly most modern day consoles/cheap(er) PCs are never going to bring you below even 60 fps with high/maxed out settings. Perhaps it's an age thing, I'm unsure. I grew up when games like FF7 were considered pioneers for graphical capabilities.

And another big use case is among university students. I need my laptop to do my coursework in data science, I can run some CPU heavy analysis in class, take it back to my apartment, plug it in an external monitor, do any programming on a much wider UW screen and game for whatever little time I can squeeze out, then pop it out again in the morning and take it to class. I don't want to spend $2500 dollar on a desktop and another $1500 on a laptop that is powerful enough for course requirements, when I can just spent like $2300 on a laptop get a i9+4080 that can handle anything related to coursework or my gaming requirements for the next 2-3 years. Obviosuly later when I don't have to carry a computer on weekdays, I'll build a desktop but there are certainly many use cases for a powerful laptop and their buyers are not dumb because I cant lug my PC tower and UW monitor everyday to class.

Yeah agree with everything you guys are saying, where at the point no where you don’t have to sacrifice performance for convenience, been gaming since I was a kid in the 90s and honestly there has never been a better time to be a gamer, just because their are so much good options. Also the kind of improvements we are seeing in form and factor you might not even need a desktop in 3/4 years time. @yangbalanceyin 😂 yep me to, remember people used to go on about how great the FMVs in the game was and then how blown away everyone was a year later when FFVIII released and it had that fight scene at the beginning of the game. Tbf it was some ground breaking stuff at the time 😂

Great video as always but while I know games are becoming more demanding, to say 8GB of vram is entry level just isn't true, (maybe at 1440p but at 1080p its not) if anything it's mid, entry is like 4GB -6GB (a 3050/4050 - 3060/4060) while a 3060ti/4060ti to 3070ti/4070ti is midrange, 4080 and 4090 are high end likes it always been. It wasn't until this year where we saw AAA games needing more than 8GB to run smoothly and those were mainly do to bad ports/optimization which were adjusted in later fixes. for example there was no reason Last of Us remastered can run smoothly on a ps5 and not a 3060 ti or higher (which is equivalent in performance only difference is the Vram size but the PS5 uses its system ram as vram and is shared with it CPU/APU hence the higher limit which should translate to a PC with it own dedicated RAM and Vram for resources)

What's unfortunate is some of these VRAM issues are just due to terribly optimized games like The Last of Us. It's a nice-looking game for sure, but no way should it be performing so crap on high end hardware. Take that in comparison to the Doom games from a company like ID software, who has had amazingly well optimized games ever since they existed in the early 90s. Doom Eternal on a GTX 1660TI laptop gets above 60 FPS at the highest settings at 1440P or a even a 1060 laptop that's good for over 60 FPS max settings at 1080p.

It's not the only game. Hogwarts Legacy has textures popping in and out becuase there just isn't enough vRAM on 8 GB GPUs with ray-tracing enabled. Two other games, A Plague Tale Requiem and The Callisto Protocol, both have massive stuttering with those 8 GB of vRAM GPUs. Edit: On second thought, the 6700M would be a way better choice than the 3060 and to an extent, even a 3070 (given price disparity). Similar to the point you talked about in the video with respect to the 3070 vs 6800, the added VRAM reduces any headaches you'd have with textures and other graphical settings significantly.

I spend a good amount of time abroad, and wind up wanting to kill some time in a hotel room. Being able to play games in that situation is invaluable. I am also in the fortunate position of being able to work from my own personal laptop, so I am able to bring my own personal machine around and use it in both a work and personal setting. @ around 25:00 talking of PC vs Laptop, Jarrod made the point, on a laptop you cant just swap out the GPU. PCs are made of solid stuff, Laptops aren't, unless you have a Panasonic tough-book. I can build A PC with a robust PSU, along with a decent Case, over-engineered to accept a better system when I decide to swap the Motherboard-CPU- and GPU, in five years. Also, a good case is not likely to become obsolete (neither is a PSU). Build a PC to be real, and last, for several upgrades in the next decade. Get an affordable laptop to compliment it.

Question re laptop vs dekstop: Main difference is you can more easily transport laptops. Desktop will always have better performance with the similarly named parts. BUT, building a 4090 desktop with 4TB of SSD, buying a 4K monitor, 64Gb DDR5 ram, and a 13900K will cost as much or more than a GT77 which has it all in one. You'll get 35% better average FPS in games, some will be more. So let's look at it this way. It will still cost near as much to build a desktop 4080 which will have similar gaming performance to a good 4090 laptop. The desktop will likely be quieter but they can be horrendously noisy under load too. It will also likely make the GT77 look tiny. So that's the thing that might matter. I love having a laptop on my overbed table in my room. Then I can take 10 steps and move the laptop to my studio room when I want to make music. Even though I COULD set up one of those overbed tables with desktop stands in my room, it would be a pain to move the desktop to the studio room, there is no room to roll the table and do it that way. Also think of it this way: Just last year you could buy a 3090 ti desktop and 12900K etc and pay the same price or more than a GT77 today. Remember I am including TWO 2tb SSD and 64GB DDR5. Right now that laptop is 7.1K in Australia, and includes Win 11 Pro. 13980HX which thrashes a 12900K also. I priced desktops last year with 3080ti, 64Gb ram, 4TB SSD and they were 6 grand in Australia, without a screen or proper gaming mouse and KB combo. About 7K all up. for a 3080 ti. Custom build, top cooling, etc. The GT77 with 4090 will outperform that in CPU and be neck and neck with all gaming FPS, not to mention DLSS3. It will THRASH a 3080 from last year though. And it's portable. If it's too bulky, get the GE78HX which is just as fast in every way. Just an IPS 300 nit 1600P screen instead of 4K mini LED screen. Still 2x2TB SSD and 32GB ram standard. If you need G-Sync and can live without F key lighting or any windows hello functionality, Asus is your answer in 2023. The only time you really lose with a laptop, the way I see it, is when you want a desktop 4090, which you can't get. That's basically it. But desktop processors are hitting 100c also with good cooling, are loud, and the main advantage is the GPU in 2023. Do you really think desktop GPU are quiet under 100% load? I promise they are not. And you know what? I cap many games at 60 FPS and my laptop therefore doesn't strain either GPU or CPU and it becomes silent. My legion 7i is also very portable, which is why I will always keep it even when I get my 4090 replacement within the next couple weeks (just deciding which laptop). Facts. Do you really think you can't play ANYTHING on a laptop 4090? Especially those using 1600P screens. You won't even need DLSS in any current game at that resolution with a laptop 4090. At 4K many 2 year old games will run native 60+, and modern games ultra settings/4K/DLSS quality are possible. You can play anything and have it look gorgeous. 22000 TimeSpy on GT77 should tell you. Heck, my laptop is 10,500 time spy (legion 3070 2021) and I can play anything at high settings/60 FPS if I use DLSS quality or balanced at the lowest (1600P). You only need a desktop if you want minimum 60 FPS at every game at 4K at native. That's it. If you can live with DLSS on some games, or 1440P or 1600OP native (depending on the laptop you buy aspect ratio), you can play anything for years to come without DLSS at all. Why don't we just say it how it is. the main difference is you can get to that 99th percentile of extreme performance with a desktop. The question is, do you care. I don't. Desktops are always better for audio professionals though, due to usually having much lower DPC latency. That's a different matter entirely.......

Hi Jarrod I have a rtx 2060 laptop from 2019 (with 32gb hyperx kit and 3 ssd's that are the fastest in their class), and didn't have any vram problems in games with ultra settings till now. a week ago I get Hogwarts legacy just for testing my laptop. frames was OK (between 60-110) at first with ultra settings preset and dlss on quality. but when I turned on ray tracing, fps dropped to 20 frames ( RAM usage over 20gb, VRAM around 5.4gb) on 1080p TUF external monitor. I think 6 or 8gb vram shouldn't be the problem since a lot of even high end laptops are using 6-8gb graphics card (about 70% of them). I tested AAA titles with my laptop on my channel. I also bought two 3060 asus rog laptops (intel and amd) for my brother and sister, one with 1080p and one 1440p and they dont have vram problems with ultra settings even with 6gb. Game performance is based on your system specs. I mean, a game might use 5gb vram on one card and 7gb on another with same settings. if the game optimized well, it will run without problems and automatically uses necessary amount of memory. a game like Hogwarts legacy is not optimized cause when you turn down settings to medium or high (instead of ultra) it will still use above 5gb again and stutters when going from one place to another. I don't think a person who just wanna play a video game have to spend 3k or 4k for a beast to reach the game requirements, I think it should be the game, that have to optimized well for budget GPUs. why shouldn't the rtx cards be able to use the one thing that they made for, with exclusive cores for that reason? a gtx 1080 with 8gb vram and rtx 2060 with 6gb vram both can't use ray tracing in Hogwarts, one for being gtx and one for less vram. or rtx 3050 with 8gb vram can't use ray tracing either. rtx cards have extra cores for ray tracing but cant use it?! I think games should be more optimized not vram. If an average gamer wanna play these unoptimized games, he/she has no choice to either buy a high end PC or not to buy at all. the recommended requirements system for this game is 11gb gtx 1080 ti, so you have to own a 12-16gb card to just erase the vram problem, so then for 4k res and ultra ray tracing we should go for 4090 or 3090 sli just for 30-60fps. Its all about optimizations, not vram. 6-8gb vram is enough for any games at ultra settings. I also tested a lot of AAA titles with my laptop in my channel. Thank you. p.s. Your laptop reviews are the best. oh and sorry for my bad English. (from iran)

Another part on vram is the steam hardware survey (which imo is pretty representative of pc gamers) where the top 5 popular cards are the: 1650 (4gb vram) 1060 (3-6gb vram) 3060 (12gb vram) 3060m (6gb vram) 2060 (6-12gb vram) These make up around 25% of steam users with around 46.5% for top 13 (14th being the 3080 with 8-16gb) so if game devs will be targeting 16gb vram since the ps5 has 16gb total ram, they'll be leaving out millions of users and blaming it on vram when as you said, it's quite clearly optimisation issues (which we've seen for any ported game that had little effort put into it). I don think nvidia not giving much vram to their latest cards is a good move considering the price but if the games that have vram issues are ps5 ports then is this really a thing that everyone should be scared about and that 8gb vram is useless so they have to buy a 7900 xtx or 4090 to be able to play games? Also i also think 8gb vram is enough for ultra in games (unless you're using path tracing but not many cards can even run that) and spending 3-4k like you said to play these games at all is unreasonable. Maybe when direct storage is finally in games it'll solve the vram issue mostly but that's not for a few years i reckon.

0:20 New HyperX cloud? New Flight in the works too? 😮 To save on vram just turn textures to high or very high compared to ultra and turn off msaa. My laptop with 3070Ti so far has zero issues running at 1080p. Ofc games demand more at 1440p, which is why my next laptop will have a good quality 1080p panel rather than the 1440p I have today. It's very clever to offer 1440p panels, consumers need more and more power to run the games at 1440p and such they will upgrade more often... I've got a 23,5" 1080p240 monitor at home as well as my 65" Oled TV, it's only when I'm away from home I use my built in 17" 1440p240 display.

VRAM + pricing is the exact reason that I got a G15 AE for $1000. 12GB of VRAM, and comparable performance to a 4070 outside of RT? No brainer. It was so much cheaper that I could justify swapping my 7900XTX to a 4090 too...

depends on your use case. was sold on getting a laptop with an AMD gpu until i remembered CUDA cores and RT performance, both of which are crazy useful for 3d modeling and animation, cad programs, and MATLAB, which i'm an aerospace engineering student so those are things i will be using during my time at university. AMD really does give best bang for the buck but unfortunately NVIDIA just has a massive edge in certain spaces, so for use cases like mine i got a 4070 laptop which i know isn't a great deal but i wanted as fast as possible without the huge price jump from 4070 to 4080. 8gb vram is enough for me as i'm coming from 6 and i'm not trying to play AAA games on max settings, mostly just play games like apex legends and minecraft. but if you don't have specific needs for CUDA cores, absolutely you should go for AMD. everyone has to consider their own situation very carefully because there are cases where someone might buy an AMD gpu because it seems like a no-brainer and then realize they really should've gone for NVIDIA.

I think ideally both laptop and desktops shall have identical GPU chips with identical VRAM configuration of each other, and there is still gap between 96MB L2 and VRAM. Thus, I believe RTX 60 shall have L3 cache on GPU, closing the gap, reduces VRAM cache load
@bastiangugu4083 Жыл бұрын
I think a possible outcome of the price hikes for GPUs might be the death of PC gaming. Why should I pay exorbitant prices if I can get a console that games better in most games, given the state of PC ports? Then there is no gaming market for nVidia at all, if the rumours are true that Nintendo might go with Qualcomm for the next Switch.

Im starting my architecture masters soon and I need a new laptop. I’ll be using CAD, rendering software, and creative tools like Adobe products. Which Do you think is better: the Lenovo Legion 7 pro 4090 or the Dell XPS 17 4080? The Dell comes out more expensive when specced with the same I9 and 32GB of RAM. Is the Dell build quality and portability worth the up charge? Then my follow up question: if I needed to go more budget friendly and more portable, which would be a better option, the Dell XPS 15 4070 or the Lenovo Legion Slim 7 4070?

About the eGPU situation I can say yes it would be viable solution if you are using either ASUS' proprietary XG1 mobile port which is based of off Oculink on their modern gaming laptops based on certain models or Oculink by it self because the performance of Oculink by itself is unmatched because there is no bandwidth bottlenecks which means if you had an Oculink eGPU dock /w desktop 4080 or 4090 you can get very close to the performance of those GPUs if you had them plugged into an actual desktop PC. If you are using USB4 or Thunderbolt then no it wouldn't be very viable because of the bandwidth bottlenecks that Thunderbolt and USB4 has. Also mind you that ASUS' eGPU solutions use only Laptop GPUs. Oculink is the same basic concept as Thunderbolt 4 and USB 4 that it taps into the PCI-E lanes however its not very user friendly because you cannot hot swap oculink devices like you can Thunderbolt however through the Oculink cable you have PCI-E Gen 4 x4 (4 lanes of PCI-E Gen4) which is indeed faster than what Thunderbolt and USB4 can offer. At the end of the Day boils down to what interface you are using for your eGPU solution on top what Desktop GPUs you are using.

i have a different perspective in regards to the laptop vs pc debate -- i just got the lenovo legion pro 7i gen 8 4080. i did this cause the last upgrade i had was when i built my pc, its a ryzen 5 3600 and rx 5700 so the laptop is a massive jump up in production and gaming capabilities. my idea is that i'll use this laptop for 3-4 years and then build another pc. if the generational gains are exponential enough, why not switch back and forth? i like being able to work and game while sitting in the same room with my family and i can't do that with a pc. i also like being able to go anywhere, anytime and i can't do that without a laptop.

I bought the g15 in mid 2021, it was my first gaming laptop. Its been serving me well, my only regret is that there was no option to have a g15 with a 3070 gpu at that time. 8gb vram in 2023 is still decent. 6gb is a bit limiting though.

At the moment i want to switch my Desktop to a more powerfull Laptop: Currently i am running an i7 8700k, GTX 1070, 16gb ddr4 3200mhz up to this day i never had a problem while running the games i usually play. Because of my job i'd like a machine that can take heavy CAD Work while also support me over the next 5 years or maybe more. I have my eyes on the Legion Pro 5i (2023) at the moment with the RTX 4070, i7 13700hx, and 16gb ddr5 4800mhz. I guess that this will be more than enough for my standart work and games but after this video i am thinking about making a step up to a 4080 but i have the feeling that there will be very few machines that will have such a nice price to power ratio like the Legion. If you read this Jarod maybe you could help me out on this one.
