The problem with forward swept wings is a phenomonen called 'aeroelastic divergence' meaning excessive and unwanted wing flex at certain flight regimes.
@hanrockabrand958 ай бұрын
True. In layman's terms, the design can cause air to push upward more at the wingtips, which twists the wingtips upward, which increases the upward force on the wingtips, which twists the wings more... which could cause them to snap at some point.
@doccls8 ай бұрын
Correct. With traditional spar-rib-stringer wing construction, the tip twist is divergent. The only way to make a forward-swept design work is with composite construction, which the Soviets didn't have at the time.
@vasilijevukadinovic68438 ай бұрын
@doccls u are correct but they did u composites on the wings. This was the first plane witch they used to test. There was something witch I forgot. It was either the got the composites from someone else or they used an inferior process to make them. Can't remember but maybe couldn't make wings in 1 pice or not a pre peg process. Anyway something
@vasilijevukadinovic68438 ай бұрын

I remember reading about when the Swedes first brought their Gripens to Red Flag. They did very well against red air at the beginning using their tactics like only 1 plane in the flight had their radar on and transmited the radar picture to the other Gripens via their very good data link and the Gripen being so small with a low RCS they were able to surprise the bandits.

The "no shoot," on missiles is probably due to the aerodynamic and ballistic limitations of the missiles themselves. A missile can't turn on a dime, they are just too fast and have small control surfaces. They can turn in longer sweeping turns and their speed allows them to make small adjustments in reaction to the target. But 'off the rail,' they are not capable of just doing wild sharp turns and being fast enough to catch the target in close.

The idea of forward swept wings was born because of the problem early jets had with back swept wings. Too much air pressure at the tips at high speed locked the ailerons, so the idea was to sweep the wings forward and bring the pressure to the root and free the control surfaces. Once tried though, they found it was causing more problems than it solved so they decided to move the ailerons closer to the wing root in the form of spoilers. Not as efficient for maneuvers but far more reliable for control

It's crazy how much the forward canopy bow obstructs the attempt to line up high aspect gunshots in the one circle. Surprising there aren't more fully transparent canopies like the F-16, but I guess it's not a common enough scenario to justify giving up the structural reinforcement.
