A Different World was my absolute favorite show in the 90's. I just couldn't ask for a perfect show that dealt with African American when I was growing up. Jasmine Guy and Kadeem Hardison relationship made the show all that much enjoyable. They are an important part of my childhood. They are incredible actors along with the rest of the cast.

@@maryjs4878 back in the day, the one drop rule was more common so it probably implied her being biracial meant that she could still have an impact in that space. It depended on the situation, Eartha Kitt was a biracial woman who famously claimed her blackness and was treated as a black woman, but it was in her earlier years she was called “high yellow” by her mother’s partners. Today, we have expanded the conversation, but I don’t think that retroactively means she had no impact in black spaces. I’m sure even back then, dark skinned women were not able to relate. I’d definitely be interested to hear thoughts of darker complected women who lived through this time.

Thanks to everyone for just showering her with compliments and not making it about her physical appearance. She aged gracefully. We're allowed to do that. One of the reasons people are so hard on her and Kadeem is because A Different World is still on in reruns and it's still immensely popular. Therefore most people only remember seeing them as being youthful on the show. One of my fondest memories was going to drop my daughter off at Virginia State University for college, and every television on campus was tuned into A Different World marathon. The entire time I was helping her move into the dorm, I would find myself standing in front of the TV catching episodes.

This was a fun segment. Side note - No one ever talks about the movie she acted in called, “ Perfect Crime.” It’s a true story about DV victim, Shirley Gibbs Russell. I saw it back in 1997. I grew up with Jasmine Guy, almost literally.. she’s only a year older than myself and I couldn’t get enough of her Whitley character. Her sarcastic wit just killed me! LoL She wasn’t just a popular black character on the show “It’s a Different World,” she was a popular character who everyone enjoyed at that time, she was on top of her game and the show itself was impactful. I don’t know what happened to her career, if maybe she was typecast too much afterwards? I know she did a couple Lifetime movies and a couple other sitcom roles but nothing as popular as her Whitley character, I think ppl had a difficult time looking past that character when she started to play more drama roles. I think she’s fantastic and I’ll always have a soft spot for her. Has anyone seen her docu called The Uncensored Truth About Jasmine Guy?
