The way Frank listened to Dougie and then gave him advice as a friend first and a lawyer second because he needed that at that moment is why Frank is a great asset to Wyrmwood.

except it sounds like Doug was getting the wrong lesson from it. asking if he might be able to back up what was done? saying that "wasn't it great when we didn't have HR?" in response to "CEO shouldn't be handling this stuff, HR should be handling all of this."

I interpret Frank as in many senses loving how Wyrmwood is/was a fresh new way of running a company and most of all a business. Frank tried to help by making clear what the risks were with each move. He never ever suggested something this drastic.

@@bunker1213 Exactly. If feels surreal to me that he had this meeting with the rest where he resigned BEFORE he even talked to the lawyer. Frank would probably suggest that if Doug doesn't want to handle it, he should appoint a COO whose job would be to implement it all.
@ForsakenFx
@ForsakenFx 4 жыл бұрын
@@Lathlaer I was going to comment with this when the video first went up, but decided not to in the end. Most CEO's (at least in tech, which is where all my experience is) are pretty incompetent at the day to day management of a company once it is in excess of ~60+ people. While more management is not always better, having a COO lessens the workload on the CEO and allows them to focus on macro management, rather than micro management. CEO should deal with the larger picture and scope of the company, and COO should deal with the actual hierarchy under them. Alternatively they could have implemented a CCO (Compliance officer), which is exactly what it sounds like Doug was personally unable to undertake as his role as CEO. In this particular case they could have just had Doug step aside, and write off on what decisions were made by the CCO. This is also commonly something that would also be overseen by a COO, as COO responsibilities varies from company to company. Also they could potentially get away with homebrew by paying as outsourced contractors if they are having to temporarily lay people off; this depends on the state laws and such, but it could work as a work around.

Well, to be fair, small businesses (which they aren't any more they're now much bigger than they started) don't really see a need for HR as you know all the people you work with. (I worked at a small restaurant of like 10 employees, and one was the owner so 9 other employees. To have an HR would have been odd, as all us girls didn't see a need for it. She also usually hired only girls, probably because that's mainly who'd apply. But there was a dude that is still there. I've since left but that's because I found a position elsewhere closer to what my field of study was and I couldn't let that slide by.

Not knowing what everyone has said at Wyrmwood, I will say from experience that a call by employees for HR is a sign of a harrassment problem. You may not know who, where, or why, but it's more than likely happening and can open you up to even more issues legally than just the OSHA stuff. Always remember, HR exists to protect the COMPANY, not the EMPLOYEE, and if the employee's are calling for something that doesn't exist to protect them, they are doing so because there is a bigger threat to them and their safety than something that should be there for the company. It's going to be rough going for the whole Wyrmwood team going forward, but we all appreciate your transparency, honesty, and acceptance. Get through the corporate shit, and make a better Wyrmwood on the other side!
@cogspace
@cogspace 4 жыл бұрын
I'd argue that HR exists to protect the company AND the employees, but I totally agree on all other points. This is a concerning red flag. Here's hoping it's just that these workers feel like they aren't being heard by management and want an HR person to be their advocate on things like OSHA compliance.
@harmarize
@harmarize 4 жыл бұрын
I disagree on that harassment is the only reason why you want HR. I worked at a small company that had about 7 employees, (no HR of course) all of us being there for 10+ years. The 7 of us were all good friends with no issues bringing stuff up to one another. There was no office politics, everyone knew each others quirks, what was fun meaningless jokes and banter. Then we started growing, and all of a sudden had about 35ish people. These were new people who didn't know the culture, didn't know our personalities, didn't know when we said stuff that meant to be a harmless joke. Since we had no HR, they could essentially only go to the owner or a manager to file a suggestion or complaint. Since we were all old timers they felt their voices couldn't be heard or felt ignored. I didn't blame them for a second. I was friends with a few of them and they felt they could only voice their concerns to me. Most didn't feel harassed other then some crude jokes which meant to be harmless but definitely tasteless. I would then bring it up to the owners. I wasn't supposed to be HR I was supposed to be a developer, but some of them felt they could only come to me. Some of the stuff was safety issues, or questions about sick leave, holidays, pay raises, etc. There was no employee handbook. HR is needed for stuff like this. You don't want HR to be one of the old-timers or you run into the same problems. The employee needs to be able to go to someone who isn't the owner or upper management. Yes there is bad HR which is only there to protect the company, but plenty of the time HR does care and will take complaints or suggestions properly. The founder/owner in a small business like that is generally an entrepreneur, they don't know or want to deal with stuff like that. Safety, regulations, employee handbooks, they see those as hurdles preventing from them being able to do what they love - building things. They want to see their business grow, and create things. It's often best for the owner to step down from CEO role and go to a product manager role so they can focus on what they love and are skilled at, while letting the normal day to day operations fall on someone who knows how to deal with that. I dont think Jason will be the best CEO either. I think he would be a great interim CEO, but he seems like he also has the entrepneure spirit in him too and feel like he will also be bogged down by this. I could be completely wrong though.

Listening to what they were saying, I took the need for HR to help push things up the pipeline and that the problems that employees had that weren’t problems in managements eyes weren’t being addressed. HR isn’t just about harassment. It’s about feeling comfortable in your workplace. If you’re upset about a policy or in this case, lack their of, and management don’t want to listen, you might feel a need for HR.

Okay, I feel a bit better. Bobby's comments helped. I agree with Frank in most respects -- Doug didn't need to step down from CEO, and Doug's wrong that it has to be "all or nothing". You don't need to put company culture in a strait jacket. Following OSHA regulations =/= a major change in company culture. It just isn't. Doug seriously overreacted to the situation and took it super personally. But that said, I also agree with Bobby: Is it that big a deal that folks are moving roles? I guess not. I feel better about it now. People will still be doing what they can to make the company as good as it can be. And I trust Jason. He'll do a great job.

Doug is a doer and a visionary. He likes to get his hands dirty and make on-the-spot decisions that make or break projects. A great leader to form a start-up, not necessarily the best kind of leader to implement stability and long-term growth within a company. For that you need someone who can make well-thought-out decisions and direct others while looking at the big picture. Not just for one project, but for the entire company for years to come. And I think Jason is that kind of a leader, so I'm confident this was the right decision for Doug to make.

The only thing I'd disagree with here is that being CEO might have to be "all or nothing." Specifically in the sense of -- if Doug isn't 100% sure he wants to be CEO and deal with all of this, then Wyrmwood probably needs another person to be CEO right now. I'm not sure a company at this specific inflection point of growth, expansion, HR concerns, etc, can afford to have someone who isn't 100% committed to the role of CEO.

There's a very good reason why the standard exit plan for leadership at disruptive startups is to sell, grab a massive blob of equity, and do it again in a different company; the reason is that people like Doug run startups, and people like Jason run maturing and mature businesses. Stepping back from the CEO chair is precisely the right thing at this stage. Doug shoots from the hip, moves fast, and pivots constantly, and those are absolutely necessary things until they're not. The one thing Doug's totally wrong on is safety regulation. Every time you see an OSHA reg, it's written in blood. There are multiple people maimed and dead behind every one. I was and EMT in a rural town, and my grandfather was a union carpenter. He buried friends; I (literally) picked up the pieces of farmers; in both cases, it was because they complied with the spirit of the reg, not the letter. Wyrmwood's been in good hands. Wyrmwood's in good hands. Can't wait for the next chapter.

So much respect for Frank, always the voice of reason... The fact that Doug recognized his own inability to conform to the corporate way of doing things in a growing company is to be commended... a huge chunk of the sentiments I saw on this and the previous video kinda echo how I feel about it though, that Doug is in the cheesiest way possible a "leader", someone who can rally people because he exudes authority through competence. And I don't think I'm going out on too much of a limb here, but hearing that a non-trivial amount of his employees basically gave him a vote of no confidence probably didn't feel great for a man so invested in the wellbeing of the company he helped create... The lack of HR/communication is a huge problem, but one to be expected for a company that multiplied in size within a few weeks... but like Frank put it, you can't have the tail wagging the dog...

I hope people who work in Wyrmwood watch this video. I think it really highlights a shift in the management style and mindset. For a long time, this was a fun company made of a tight knit group of friends of family who all have personal relationship and care for each and every member of the team. And that worked because it was a small group. But now they are completely shifting their management mindset to company first. Regulations, HR, OSHA compliance, health insurance, all of that is to protect the company from expensive problems. And those problems are caused by the employees that the company can no longer afford to care for individually.

Well, holy fuck. That was an intense two back to back episodes of Wyrmlyfe. 1. All the props to Doug, I think it takes real vision to see that hey, what I'm doing isn't right for this thing I've built and the people that I'm leading. And it takes real humility to be willing to let go of some power, so that you can step into a roll that is a better fit and letting someone else take the reigns that is going to make the things happen that need to happen. I really hope that both Doug is personally happier with the change and that Wyrmwood continues to grow and have wild success. 2. I don't think that you have to lose your "weird" while doing things more "traditional" and safe. Ya'll still can have fun at work. I have loved seeing this company evolve over this past year through the lens of Wyrmlyfe and I can't wait to watch where you go in the future.

It feels like there's two different issues here, neither of them world ending, and yet Doug's solution is to, in my eyes, cut off his arm because he broke his hand. No one likes dealing with HR, regulation compliance, etc. That's why HR departments exist. That's why Chief Compliance Officers exist. Doug has been doing the work of several different corporate officers and he needs to delegate some of it. The second issue is Doug's leadership. If he doesn't believe in his skills to get them through this, no one else will. And at the same time, if the employees feel like their concerns aren't being addressed by their leader, then that requires the leader to examine their leadership style. But neither of those require him stepping down from being CEO.

I feel like it is not stupid for people to want stability and safety. I have been watching these past episodes and no one is wearing a mask during a pandemic and the discussion of people being high at work while working machinery... it is actually insane. Plenty of companies can have rules and still be a good company and be fun to work for. I appreciate Doug and his transparency. He is a good guy, but he has a strong will and he is unwilling to compromise. He is not the right leader for what this company is now. I am curious to see what happens from here. Leaders need to be questioned and regimes change. Without change, there is no growth. I am excited to see how all of times moves forward.

So i know in the last Wyrmlife video Doug and others were talking about how weird Wyrmwood is and the fear that putting the safety regulations in place will dampen that. But this video just proved to me that it's not about the regulations it's about the people. Wyrmwood is weird because it has interesting and different people on staff. That won't change because of safety regulations!

To be fair, it's easy to play by ear and say "!@$@ the rules" when you're king. But when you're an average worker clocking in for that pay check, you need consistency. You need that safety net, that healthcare, and protections to ensure you're being treated fairly too. I love you guys, and just because you'll be adding a few more rules doesn't mean you guys will stop being weird or entertaining!

I like a lot of these people and I wish them all the best and I hope the company continues to soar and I can’t wait to keep supporting, but most of all I want Doug to be happy. I took a lot of inspiration from him as a leader and I can see the difficulty in this decision for him. Stepping away from something you take pride in building is not easy. Thankfully he’s still involved but I hope most of all he thrives in his new position and he can be proud of what he does in the future to build this company even higher. I’m proud to say I looked up to Doug for what he did at Wyrmwood.

There's a lot to digest here. Watching WyrmLyfe since the beginning, Doug as the CEO has been like a staple. But the company is growing. And I agree with Doug in that he's plateaued as far as pushing the boundaries of what the company can become. OSHA safety has been a huge issue with me (as a safety coordinator) with these videos, but seeing you guys work towards making things safe for the employees you care for (even if the regulations can DEFINITELY feel more like restrictions). I also agree with Frank in that Doug should have consulted his lawyer before doing this decision lol. But that's Doug, and probably the main piece of evidence of how he needed to step down. This is a great company, humble, and growing. I'm excited to see where you guys will go from here. Godspeed, Wyrmwood.

I think Bobby put the most perspective on the situation, in that it seems Doug has not wanted his role for years. That all said, I think the (now former) CEO of a company acting as though implementing an HR department and following OSHA regulations is “going corporate” is beyond frustrating. Human Resources and OSHA are there to protect and provide security to your workforce that is actually creating your product and lifeline in business. The idea that implementing these is “boring” or “going corporate” is not only insulting to those that fought to create the regulations for workers but massively tone deaf to the entire workforce of your company. Implementing practices that help those at the ground floor of your company is not a rejection of being weird or cool. It is insuring you have a god damn company to be a weird part of. The pandemic is real. Wear a mask. Workplace accidents are real. Follow OSHA. Employees deserve representation. Use an HR Department.

doug keeps bitching about HR departments but i don't think he actually knows what an HR department does (onboarding, protecting the company from legal complaints, dealing with health insurance, etc...) something that might benefit the company is finding someone who knows OSHA regulations well & hiring them to educate employees for a safety committee so that employees aren't accidentally breaking safety regulations. like, all of these things protect THE COMPANY at the end of the day because no one is suing Wyrmwood for letting them huff wood glue fumes or spray wood stain into their eyeballs with no warning or safety equipment.

That's some big faith from Bobby. Get you a friend who believes in you like that. Lol the fact that often people at the bottom of the chain were getting news from Wyrmlife says a lot about communications at the company. I can see the shift in Jason's eyes, but it looks less like he's effulgent with power, and more like he's suddenly responsible for the nuclear codes. Big stress. Not sure a guy who rolls d10's like that can handle it lol.
