Starting early is a big thing, but I believe once you have a good teacher you will pick it up very quickly and fly through tests, the first year I started ( I was 13 ) I skipped 4 years worth of courses

+Aidan Wahib It's never too late, I've been playing the ukulele for a many years and have gotten quite good at it, the solution to be good at the ukulele (and most instruments) is to learn as many songs (a large variety of genres too) to expand your ukulele knowledge. Learn them by ear, no tutorials or lessons because they tell you the ukulele not teach! It will be extremely frustrating for the first few months or year (depending on how often you play) but don't give up and stay away from tutorials. The change will be very noticeable, the change is like differentiation of light when turning a lightswitch on deep within a cavern. I garuntee this method and lot's of will is the key. Good luck!
