I bought a built Land Cruiser for 15k. Had plenty of miles. It got totaled out and they wanted to give me $6,700 for it. I thought I had done it right by declaring all the modifications up front and paying additional premiums for the off road bumpers, roof rack, etc. They said no actually that was only for theft or vandalism. So then I disputed their number with a bunch of comparables for sale that were equipped similarly. No change to their number. So I hired an independent pre-loss adjuster for $320. $200 of that came from the policy itself. The guy did a fancy binder with photos and comps and said it was worth $15,300. GEICO immediately said yes. Best $120 I've ever spent. Kept the car minus the few grand buyout and got another 10k for it as-is. I agree with the assessment of "better to have that argument at the beginning."

Jason, I wish I had your tenacity when it comes to fighting insurance claims. My baby is a Mk3 VW Jetta Trek 5 speed manual from 97. It's a 2 owner car-just me and my mom; I was brought home from the hospital when I was born in that car, so I draw a lot of similarities between it and your Scirocco and always love hearing your stories about it. That's why I was so devastated when I hit a patch of ice about a month ago then sent me careening into a concrete barrier going 30 on an onramp. Part of it is my fault for not having gotten my winter tires on sooner (I had an appointment scheduled that was supposed to take place the next day), but part of it was also whatever d**m engineer designed an underpass onramp banked downhill away from the inside of the turn. Bumper, fender, and front-right suspension damage. Dealing with StateFarm claims has just been a living nightmare, where exactly like you said, they've been acting like I'm their enemy, not their customer, and one of the worst parts has been getting a different person each time I call, and it being a game of chance if the person on the other end knows how to do their job or not. I honestly wish I never filed a claim with them in the first place. I'm just happy I've got it at a really good and seemingly honest body shop. Can't wait to have my baby back, and thanks for all the great stories.

Yeah, this episode hits a bit close to home. I had a Toyota Camry come up the onramp on the interstate last September, cross both lanes, and basically pit maneuvered me, then drove off along with the witness. Spun me out and put into the guard rail backwards. Totaled the 240z. All after a great day participating at two car shows and just going home. Not sure it can get much more random than that. Unfortunately Hagerty wouldn't insure the car as I can't store it under cover. We have hail in Colorado. Things kind of worked out, and I'm looking for a replacement shell to move the surviving parts over to. Then I get to spend thousands of hours again getting it back to where I want it. Every classic car owner should listen to this episode.

Hagerty covers my Beat but I have to pay around 1700$ for 11,000$ agreed value which sounds allot until I state that I explain that it is listed that I drive the car allot for half the year AND the ONLY cover it gets is a car fabric cover for the Fall/Winter Time. I think this is the MOST Hagerty will go to covering a car in such conditions.
@TonySims888 Жыл бұрын
Hagerty saved me when my 2800CS was rear ended back in 2005 or thereabout. The driver who hit me was insured by Allstate, who wanted to total the coupe and pay me something like $8k. The Hagerty adjuster stepped in and took over all the negotiation, and in a short time my car was being repaired. The body shop took over a year, which is a whole 'nutha story, but in the end the car was better than before the accident.

1- That entitled Ram driver has NO idea the Grizzly she's poked. Yikes. Hoping the financial and legal punishments teach her (and her ilk) a lesson. And we hope the Beat comes back good as new. 2- Cammisa and The Hyphen should get Hagerty "organizational credits" for all the people they've helped become aware of Hagerty's business and philosophy. They're the reason Hagerty now insures our little collection - and I hope more enthusiasts see the light. 3- Perfect examples of Agreed, Replacement, and Stated Value differences. 4- Keep up the great work - you help fellow enthusiasts feel like we're not the only ones around us who appreciate this hobby.

I’ve compared between the classic policy we have on my wife’s 73 Grand Am between SF and Hagerty and Hagerty is $30 a month more expensive for the same agreed value policy. However, I haven’t been pleased with the process for classic insurance (for one thing they’ve classified it as a Lemans and won’t change the model designation) and am considering switching it to Hagerty just for our classics.

Jason made me feel better about being pedantic about where/when and who you drive your pride and joy around. It brings back terrible memories of a similar situation in 2004. Driving my 63 Sunbeam Alpine i got " Pajero"ed. Lady driving erratically like lost in her mitsu Pajero.. I kept my distance. Pulled up behind her at the lights. 10 seconds pass and her reversing lights come on. I honk..yell ...wave arms .. Reverse back until im about 4 ft from the car behind me...she starts to turn and CRUCH front right corner of my car punched. Jumped out..photographs immediately on my 640x480 sony phone.. Then to her window.. She apologizes.. Says she didnt see my small car.. She admits to reversing into me and put it on a voice recording... I then qucikly get the guy behind me to confirm he saw what happened. Her insurance company send me to their reparier, when i go to pick the car up the front bumper has veen straightened but the recrome is terrible, the brackets are still tweaked. The front right wheel arch lip is "fat" clearly blemded into the guard with filler. I raise all issues and they tell me its an pld car and its as it should be.. I show them the other 3 guards sharp lip profiles and get told all old cars have variation. Also they didnt seal the engine compartment and the engine bay is covered in sanding dust and overspray in the bonnet drain channel. I Refused to take posseison.. Called the insurance company assessor to meet me.. Had 3 photo albums of photos with closeup shots of the guards ( lucky i took the artistic closed up side profile pics) insurance agreed to get it redone... But at same place... I of course refused... Ended up waiting 6 months to finally get them to agree to another repairer. But couldn't take the car until they agreed..of course when I picked it up to take to the New shop my car was covered in 6 months of shop crap.... Having a company that can make sure your car is repaired by a restoration shop ..Not a "crash repair" place is essential

I have a car which has seen a massive increase in its valuation over the past few years, a car that I bought before starting university because I didn't think I would be able to afford it after finishing school for a long time. Unfortunately, Hagerty insurance requires a minimum age of 25 in my province, and very few companies insure right hand drive vehicles. I have two JDM cars, one is the daily driver, and is insured with one of the cheaper insurers available through my broker because they would insure a right hand drive car. I desperately want a Hagerty insurance policy so I can just protect my car from harm. Why Hagerty offers NOTHING for someone under 25 is beyond me, even a policy that'll cover the car as it sits and is undriven... Also, many JDM cars lack metal bumpers.

An important lesson about car insurance that I learned the hard way is what happens when you are hit by a drunk, uninsured, (shithead) driver. If you are injured in such an accident your only recourse for recovering incurred losses is entering in to arbitration with your own insurance company. In this event your potential coverage is dependent on the limits of your own policy. So if you have low limits for bodily injury, and property damage this is where you can potentially get screwed. Keep in mind that any lost wages, legal fees etc... all need to be covered by your policy limit in addition to whatever medical bills and injury you might have.
@rsr789 Жыл бұрын
My father worked in the insurance biz: ALWAYS get the proper coverage. Yes, you'll pay more but that one day when you need to file a claim, you'll be super happy that you paid an extra $30 or $50 a month vs getting cheaper insurance that ends up ramming you up the ass more than a truck driving chick in San Fransisco (too soon?).
