That poor truck.... I can understand the upgrades to the motor and such. Though keeping it original as possible is the better option. It would be nice to have a truck as good as that the way it was... I have 83 ford f250 460 4 speed long bed, in need of some upgrades but I would want it as original as I cold possibly keep it.

Rule #1: Never buy a diesel that doesn’t have a turbocharger! In 1977 I bought a new John Deere 4040 diesel tractor. The stock 4040 came naturally aspirated. No turbo! But the salesman agreed they’d instal a turbo and I’d still have factory warranty. The day the tractor came in the shop foreman told me how it’d go. I asked him to put it on the dyno right away. He agreed. It had 92 hp. They did the instal. Some body work was involved as the turbo was forward of the original muffler hole in the hood, but it looked stock. 👍 I asked the shop foreman to dyno it again now with the turbo and he did. The shop foreman asked if I wanted to turn the fuel up, which was common practice, and I said to leave it as is.The tractor had 135hp now. No change in fuel. So that’s why I say to never buy an unsupercharged diesel! You’ll be wasting lots of fuel! I used that tractor for heavy to medium farm work from 1977 until 2005 with no problems, just regular maintenance. Diesels need more air!

GOTCHA BEAT! I have the FIRST Cummins W350 delivered to the West Coast. Dodge built it for me in 1989, shipped it by train, had to bribe the Unions in charge of the yard to switch the cars that were lined up so I could get "DODGEZILLA" off loaded. One Union Crew to switch the cars around, Second Union crew to unload it, Third Union Crew to drive it about 50 yards to a staging location, and Finally a FOURTH Union Crew to release it to me so I could drive it from LA to Orange County where the mechanics at a well known performance shop were waiting to install a 5" LIFT, extended HD off road shocks, and cut and lengthen the drive shafts. Tires and rims were swapped so I ended up with 38's, a HEAVILY reinforced trailer hitch was welded in to provide Airstream Trailer towing capacity ( AND, to reinforce the rear frame), and the next morning I was off to Moab, Utah to try some never before run trails. That was a LOOONG time ago, AND, "ZILLA" still sits parked outside the front door running strong as ever:) That 5.9 Cummins engine has proved magnificent, as has the rest of the truck, sans the paint LOL, which went to hell after about ten years. Oh, I chose NOT to do the Dually setup, and instead opted for the oversize wheels and tires which proved (for my purposes) to be the best choice. PS: NOT EVEN KIDDING about the railroad related Unions, cost me 300 and something dollars in Pizza and Beer to get em to "bend the rules" and expedite my receiving the truck. Gotta wonder how the railroads manage to make money with all the 'extra' staffing .... ALSO, Zilla wa amazing in Moab. With her German Getrag 5 speed, low axel ratio's (4.10's), Detroil Lockers front and rear, and massive transfer case with true Granny, Zilla could IDLE up anything you could get the front wheels on with little drama. As for 'trail busting' , well we opened several new trails, climbed two which were promptly deemed "TOO DANGEROUS" by the Fed Park Service and immediately forbidden to access- one of em justifiably so as after climbing it, appeared life threatening to me too:)- one mistake, one rolled rock, and you were headed about 100 feet or so down into the river..... I later took it to the Imperial Dunes where one of the 4wd mags took a picture of Zilla parked at the topmost dune overlooking the sand bowl far below and flanked by a group of 5 or six Paddle wheeled dune climbing racing jeeps on either side, with Me standing on the hood with my arms crossed my chest with the smuggest grin you ever saw LOL. All her life, ZILLA consistently accomplished (often with 'ease') what everyone said "COULDN'T BE DONE"!!!!- Helluva truck (rides a bit 'rough' though ;)

That is a very fine truck that you should have painted and freshened up instead of putting all the garb on it. That's a 20k truck. First thing to do is put the air filter in the fender well to get the cool air, everyone puts a different air filter in the wrong place.

That was a heavy duty truck, except for the automatic transmission. My friends had a A-518, which was the same tranny that was in my Dakota 318, CI. We added some performance goodies to it and a bigger cooler, filter to the trans. We also changed the exhaust side of the turbo, extended the rack travel and got a good compromise between power and fuel economy. I don't remember all the details, but it ran good. But the convertor ballooned up with the additional HP. I would definitely upgrade the transmission, $$$$. Also the truck needed some more overdrive as it would redline the engine pretty easily as I remember, like 75 MPH? He also installed newer bucket seats & carpet. Nice truck and comfortable as well......😀.

I almost purchased a 1st generation Cummins I was impressed with it when I took it on a test drive But the turbo lag was almost impressive Hit the pedal to the floor And a second later the turbo spooled up and it took off 😂😂😂😂😂😂 Ended up with a 2nd generation which didn't have the turbo lag
