I have to say that this was one of the most in-depth reviews that I have seen of the Wave 2. I applaud you on your hard work. I do wish that you had done the test that you alluded to - placing the Wave 2 inside the truck camper and exhausting it as you did inside your house. That is the way this thing was designed to be used and it HAS to make a big difference because you would be recirculating the already cooled air instead of constantly introducing and having to heat the 100+ degree air from outside. Every reviewer I have watched has made this same mistake, and I really would like to know what the difference would actually be. Thank you for being the first one to actually acknowledging the fact that it could have been done that way at least. It would be awesome if you could run the test that way and do a Short on the results. BTW I am not intending to come off rude or negative, I was just really excited at your level of testing and was hoping someone had finally given me the info I have been looking for! Thanks for the diligence of your reviews!

I'll think about making a custom tailgate insert for the truck to test that out. I agree that it would be more effective to have the unit inside the truck and expelling out hot air.

Very informative video, thank you! One change I would make with your install. Instead of putting the intake and exhaust that close together, keep your vent tubes straight. IE, place the exhaust high enough in the window opening to straighten out the tube. Hot exhaust air will flow much better if you don’t change direction with that big drop section, AND natural flow is for heat to rise, don’t try to change that. The other change would be to actually wrap BOTH intake and exhaust tubes with insulation. Both ducts are carrying air warmer than indoor air. Flexible insulated duct or just wrap in batts with a protective cover will make a very decent difference. When the duct in completely “invisible” to you thermal camera (IE surface is room temp) you have the correct amount of insulation.
@Jasonoid
@Jasonoid Жыл бұрын
The exhaust air comes out with quite a bit of speed so I don't think the drop affects it too much but I do agree wrapping both in insulation will be beneficial, especially in the winter when I am bringing in frigid air from outside! Thanks for sharing your thoughts, much appreciated!
@marvinsauer8493
@marvinsauer8493 Жыл бұрын
@@Jasonoid part of the reason to separate the condenser inlet and outlet is to prevent crossover air. The manufacture built it with wide separation for that purpose. The exhaust really should be as far away from the condenser intake as reasonably possible. About 40% of the power used by the USA is just to move air. It isn’t cheap or energy efficient. To keep the consumption down the fans are engineered to ”just barely” move proper amount of air. So any restriction isn’t desirable. Those 12v fans do not have the ability to generate much static. I promise you that “kink” in the exhaust is reducing capacity. Change the tubes as I described and then check your tube temps with your thermal, you will see a change. That is reason your truck install was lacking. Once again reducing airflow through the evaporator caused the evaporator to ice, thus reducing air flow and cooling over time, as you observed. Also the unit MUST cool recirculating air, never single pass outside air. Physics forces the removal of the latent heat, BEFORE it can remove sensible heat. With single pass air it doesn’t get a chance to remove latent heat. Recirculating air will allow it to slowly remove latent heat (one time) and then the unit is just removing sensible heat.

Works well enough, achieved 15 degree difference (which felt cool inside the square drop trailer-in the shade, the lowered humidity helped a lot too) in 95F and 80% humidity weather here in Florida. I was also running two small USB powered fans to circulate the cooler air. My main complain is not being able to mechanically/manually set the unit to external drainage. Every time the unit shuts down the drainage is reset to internal, which in turn shuts down the unit when really full, which happens a heck of a LOT here in Florida. The hoses, being proprietary sizes are also a PITA to hook up to anything commonly used in small trailers. The Wave 2 was outside the small square drop due to space issues, I also wish the company made a raincoat for the unit.....

Makes sense that it wasn't able to work quite as well in the truck. It's the same as turning off recirculating air in a car's AC when it's hot. It has to start from scratch instead of recirculating pre-cooled air and making it more cool.

I did some one-hour testing with one of these. Off the top of my head (and in the height of Japanese summer, I'm on the top floor with a flat roof too, brutal) my installed mini-split used abot 0.75kwh, cooled the room in seconds and made the humidity much more comfortable in minutes. The Wave 2 plugged into AC used about 0.37kwh, and had basically zero effect on the room if you weren't sitting right in front of it. Nice ¥177,000 paperweight. I also had two t-shirts tightly wrapped around the exhaust pipe. The sides of the unit itself get pretty hot, and also the thing the exhause hose clips into doesn't seal well, so a lot of hot air was escaping from the sides. For reference, the room is a "6-mat" space with about 2m high ceilings, also a 4.5mat loft space and a further 6 mat area below this, but that's broken up with internal doors. I moved the ecoflow up into the attic space, and put the pipes out of the window up there. I got a second set of pipes and now have the cold air blowing along a long run and coming out, angled slightly downwards, into the main room. That works a lot better (though we've also had a slightly colder spell around a typhoon).
@larrywong7834
@larrywong7834 Жыл бұрын
Use your .75khw mini split to cool the larger room. Making the room ambient air hit desired temp for like an hour. This also removes heat contained in the walls, ceiling, and flooring of the room. Everything now is temperature cold neutralized. Now turn off that .75kwh mini split. Then. Turn on the Wave 2 set at fan#2 or fan#3 at 60F to 71F. Power draw should be under 400w range. Use Solar panels to drive this needed 400w. You could pretty much run just off Solar for free now. Your PRE colded neutralized room temp likely can be maintained for hours. If needed switch W2 to MAX. Still running W2 free from Solar.

Thanks for the testing Jason, I just wonder why everybody calls this a heatpump while ignoring the fact that the temperature range in which it will work in heating mode is VERY limited. The Wave 2 will not operate in heating mode when the ambient temperature is below 5°C/41°F. This is something i consider a serious limitation for unit also sold for heating. Technically it's clear that they didn't want to worry about the evaporator freezing and having to include a defrost function but nonetheless it's something worth being mentioned!

Probably the main reason you weren't getting that much cooling in the truck cab, was that the cooling loop was compromised. When you were running the unit inside, the unit takes the room air in and then cools it, and is a closed loop. When you were running it outside you were running it in an open loop configuration and the pressure was no loner net zero. It would be like trying to run a refrigerator by just bringing in room air instead of recirculating the cool air inside. I have seen other people tackle the cab cover issue by building a plug that sits in place of the tailgate (just a bigger piece of foam with the same two holes, which retains the net zero pressure operation and leaves to cooling loop closed. Even with no cab cover insulation, a smaller unit was able to keep the truck bed much cooler, even in the desert. I am actually considering one of these for my car, as it is much cheaper than having the car AC unit repaired. Thanks for another great review!

A really good test that I don't see anyone doing on KZbin is demonstrating how long the Wave2 can run in a car or van when it's been charged via the Ecflow 800.00 Adaptor where it get's it's power off the regular car battery, (there are so many people posting videos on KZbin about how they're suffering in the heat living in there cars, when they have a source of power for air conditioning in the form of there ICE vehicles, (with the ICE engine turned off) they just don't know how to convert that ICE Power to power the Ecoflow product lines of the adaptor and WAVE 2 , so at a minimum they probably can sleep at night more comfortably when it's over 90 degrees still in there car.

I have the unit and not sure how impressed I am with it yet. I don't like that you have to use Ecoflow battery banks for the DC option only. I wish you could use something else. Here is something for you to try, which I think would work. 1. If there could be a way to put a little bit of the cold air coming out into the intake to lower the intake air, that would lower the out cold air. I routed my tube from the cold coming out to the intake and that made the Wave 2 temperature drop significantly. 2. I wonder if it would cool better if you used the heating function, since the exhaust would be cold and you have more BTUs.

I see most people throw 2 hoses outside. But I guess you can only do the cold air exhaust hose outside , and let the intake air come from the room itself on the heat exchanger side. This means if you are warming the room, instead of pulling heat from the cooler outside air, you do a pull from the warmer inside air. Of course that does a suction effect, but most tents are not sealed. So should not be an issue

Excellent research Jason!! I use an EcoFlow Wave 2 connected to a Delta 2 Max with an additional D2 battery for 4096Wh (and a measly 320W solar but it holds its own), it works great. The weakest link in the entire setup is also the cheapest part - the exhaust hose! Your loss of energy through its thin plastic is insane. I'm sure a towel can help reduce that loss but I use an insulated 6 inch exhaust hose from Amazon. I haven't run a thermal camera on it but if I had to guess it's well below 100 degrees even after being used for hours.

You can buy insulated flex duct and slide it over your hoses to completely block most of the heat transfer from the ducts. also, the reason you got such poor results on your truck was because you had the unit outside, and it was having to heat the outside air as it pulled it into the front evap coil and try to cool it. I bet the air duct temp wasn't as cold as it was when you had it indoors.

I assume since the inlet of the suction hose is so close to the outlet (hot) hose, there will be a "short circulation". The hot air from the outlet hose discharge (near its outlet, overpressure is created) will be automatically drawn into the inlet hose (near its inlet, underpressure is created). This will obviously worsen the efficiency of the unit, as some of the heated air will be drawn back and air warmer than the outside temperature will be processed. This problem can be easily solved by delaying the output/input Thank you for the perfect video 👋

So whatever room you're in, it only drops the temp like max 5 to 6 degrees for about a couple hours then u gotta recharge for 3 to 4 hours. Then it'll run for another couple hours, lower the temp a few degrees, then recharge it again for few hours.. 1,200 bucks to get that results... Damn man idk. 😬 People are wanting results that are closer to an actual window unit. Doesn't have to be EXACTLY like a window unit, but a hell of alot closer than these results especially at that price range. Can run an actual window unit off that eco flow delta 2 for that hour and a half and get better numbers. Per manufacturer, the 2 solar panels recharge the station in 3 hours and then u can turn the actual window ac unit back on for a couple hours. Seems better results than this 😬🔥

I wonder if the device would be any more efficient if you had some more separation between the two hoses. I imagine as close as they are a fair bit of your outtake air is going right back in the intake. It's an interesting device. At the current price I can't personally justify it but I like the idea. I think it'd be neat if you hooked it up to a central AC return duct and turned on fan mode to see if it could do anything to the whole house when you are running it full power. I am still moving stuff over to solar and right now I have a situation where my batteries are full, I run the PTAC in my office full power and I am freezing, but the rest of my house isn't benefiting, and I need a way to push the excess cold into the house. Right now, I have a fan on an AC duct trying to push air through it backwards.

It's really not that efficient compared to a 5,000btu window unit, I would know. I run mine off solar, just looked at your chart on average watts per mode. I believe it's not worth it for a small home.

How does the unit deal with water condensate. I know they inject it into the exhaust. I have a dual tube stand alone unit from a different vendor. But on really damp days in heat mode or really damp days in cool mode the unit can condense more water than can be exhausted? How did the EcoFlow engineers solve this?

I don't think no one has touched on pass through charging where the unit is sitting by itself with the battery and hooked up to a DC source say in your car. Will you be able to run the unit and charge the unit at the same time say through your cigarette lighter I know it's just a hundred Watts or some sort of DC booster. Remember this is just the unit with its battery sitting in your car without any solar generator hooked up.

I've been thinking about snagging one of these during the anniversary sale and wanted to see what people may advice in my specific situation. This product is a no brainer camping in a minivan (Sienna) for cooler temperatures during the night in hotter climate (Texas etc). I understand the limitations of the product but would only need it to keep temperature comfortable overnight in the warmer months of the year. My plan would be to use the vans own AC to cool it before bedtime, and then run the Wave2 in eco mode to keep things at a comfortable level while sleeping. It looks like it's perfect for this. The ONE concern that I have is the battery and being able to use it more than one night without shore power.. I'm assuming it will drain most of the attached battery over night, and while I have 2 solar panels, it's only 230w (100 + 130). Will this even be close to enough to top up the battery for night 2 and onward or will the capacity just get smaller for each night ? lol? Is this a scenario that makes sense if I'd need to use it for several night out in the middle of nowhere? I do see that they sell the 800w alternator charger, so I guess that could be a way to recharge it while running the car for faster top up, but then you do have to run the car a long time... What say y'all?

Can I just confirm that you were able to run it via an expansion battery? Ecoflow told me this didn't work when I directly asked them (which seemed very stupid to me). I have one and it takes about an hour to have any impact on a 3mx3m room but is then effective.

I live on a 65 x12ft Widebeam canal boat in the UK which I am currently just about able to run, during the summer, using the AC200max (with B300 battery) and love watching your channel. This is the official response from Ecoflow " The Delta 2 extra battery can't be connected to Wave 2. So it can't charge the extra battery." It made no sense to me so I am really happy to know it does work especially given the difference in battery chemistry.

To be quite honest, I would prefer buying a portable window unit a/c at one-third the cost. This ecoflow unit does not sound like a game changer. It also appears that it does not significantly reduce ambient temperature like a portable window unit on wheels would. I know a portable window unit may be bulkier and heavier, but I'm sure it would make it cooler inside. Well worth the inconvenience while going easy on the wallet.
@Jasonoid

It's definitely built more for a portable setup and I wasn't really using it that way in the video. This works just like a 5000btu window AC unit but it's also a heat pump. That's where the added cost comes from. I haven't ever seen a window heat pump before. Maybe a different brand will come out with something like that soon? I'm looking forward to testing this as a heater this winter as well.

Does the wave 2 solar input or ac input , charge the delta 2 max in addition of the 1000w pv1 and pv2 ? So technically Does the wave 2 add an additional pv3 (limited to 400w) for a total of 1400w solar input And simultaneously discharged the battery for the wave 2 load? I doubt but it would be nice. Can the wave 2 be plug on only a delta 2 max extra battery without the delta 2 max and act as a battery charger with solar /Ac input ?

Came back to watch this again because I am trying to budget some large purchases for next year's camping and this winter backup power... I'm seriously looking at the Delta 2 Max and the Wave 2 and skip the Wave 2 battery with all of its ridiculous limitations like having to be plugged in to charge and not having any way to really use the power other than a USB port, so it's not even a good backup battery to run a refrigerator or anyting, along with its much lower charging input capacity. Just putting that money into a Delta 2 seems smarter but the Delta 2 Max gives a lot more functionality

Going with the Delta 2 would give you similar run-times but much more functionality since it's a full power station.
@NoZenith

@Jasonoid I'm glad you agree with that thought. I think your review of the max makes me lean that way for the additional investment, because it gets you 2 solar input ports so you can plug in to the car and a solar panel to get more juice on cloudy days and the increased capacity gives a bit of buffer to make sure you're not fully discharging the battery for added longevity. It would probably last me for a good decade and be a really good option for a few days of no power to run my house fridge

To run off DC power it need to be their power station or battery (using the xt150 port). If you want to run it off a larger LFP battery / inverter / solar setup it uses a little more power (since it's AC) but it still works great that way too! For example I run this off my AC500 inverter / solar everyday through my transfer switch and its been great.

I have D2M attached to W2 via xt150 efficient dc current. D2M PV2 solar feed is 3 x 220w panels serial array. PV1 is 2 x 220w bificial serial array. I run my W2 8am to 8pm. Couple hours at MAX. Rest tends to be Fan at level#2 or level#3. Temp set to 71 mostly. At 8pm my D2M state of charge is 60%. I power off the W2 near this time. At 8am my D2M state of charge is about 56%. Everyday I do not need to attach AC power supply to the D2M. Air Condition mode is always on via Solar Power or D2M battery. My W2 only has the 5 inch Exhaust hose connected to Outside Patio. 6 inch hose not connected. Air In is from Living room ambient air. 5 inch hose is completely Insulated. Very very Important to do this. Patio in shade been 110F to 118F degrees.

At 8am my D2M state of charge is about 56%. During the morning with W2 air Condition on my SOC drains to about 20%. But Solar brings SOC back up to 98-99% in the afternoon. Which often holds at this level till about 5:30pm. As the Sun goes down my SOC drops to about 60% near 8pm. Yes. For a couple hours my W2 air condition uses D2M Battery quite a bit.

These twin tube a/c,heaters make no sense to me. For a/c you are sucking in hot air and cooling it down rather than taking the already cooled air from the room which needs less energy to cool. Even worse for the heating where the mechanism is taking very cold air from outside and trying to warm it up rather than taking the already semi-warm air directly from the room and warming that. I wrote "even worse" because I doubt this heat pump will warm up any air if it is trying to process outside air that is under 45 degrees F. In my test of the Whynter heat pump a/c and heater combo, not having a second hose worked great in a 250 sq ft room with lots of windows that is attached to a large warehouse in the middle of the winter with temps in the 20's. This is a situation where your setup would fail, might have been nice to mention that. Also would have been nice to see your home charts go across a full 24 hours with another chart line showing outdoor temperature. Decent review, with a bunch of missing data/discussion but at least you provided the wattage.
