Your guess that they cut out some of the after performance dialog seems right. All that buoyancy talk seems like they guessed that he was adding or releasing gas in the balloon via the string in his hand. So, since he fooled them, I'm inclined to think that there was an "invisible" string from above. Or, maybe the visible string in his hand was thick enough to house a wire that articulated, i.e., mechanically lifted/lowered the balloon?

His performance was superb. I'm slightly surprised that neither you nor Penn mentioned the possibility that Xavier had a small rubber bulb in his hand; if this were connected to the balloon by a small tube in the string, he'd be able to control the volume of gas in the balloon, and hence its average density relative to the air.

My guess was that the "string" was actually a hose, and he was able to control a pump somehow that put fluid into the "string", causing it to gain/lose weight. This would keep the balloon weighted down when the "string" was full, and would allow it to rise when the "string" was emptied.

@@MrMurphyum right, but how does he pop it at the end.
@gaugehardt49504 жыл бұрын
Off the top of my head, the the string was a thin hose pumping an alternating combo of helium and sulfer hexaflouride, helium makes it rise, sulfer hexaflouride makes it fall, but too much helium makes it pop, that or there was a small needle that popped the balloon at the end of the hose when it went just high enough to end the trick.
@lawofficeofprestonparkpllc49184 жыл бұрын
Rats. I see you beat me to it, except I said xenon. He wouldn't need to pump more helium into the balloon though. The amount of helium required would make the balloon noticeably larger anyway. And, I don't think his hand could conceal enough helium to pop the balloon. The SF6 would flow up into the balloon when he squeezed the pump and drain back out when he released it. The weight of the SF6 would keep it at the bottom of the balloon so it would always be the first gas to be forced back out. I don't know how he popped the balloon, but that doesn't seem like it would be much of a mystery to a magician.

I also think the "string" is involved, like pumping gas or something. His grip on the string is awkward and looks like he's trying to palm something. And he gathered up the string at the end, because it would look silly and not mesh with the plot if he dragged it on the ground behind him after it popped, and he couldn't just drop it on the ground without revealing the secret. So he did the least-awkward choreography possible of just gathering it up into his hand. Now, why didn't the balloon visibly inflate or deflate, is the amazing effect to me. But maybe this is achievable chemically, I don't know.

My theory is it does work like a hot air balloon. The way he was holding the end of the balloon string and the way it attached to the balloon seemed unusual. The string also seemed more like a thin rope than a string so it could have been some type of hose with an apparatus built in that uses heat to make it rise. He controls it with a device hidden in the hand holding the end of the hose, which the ropelike hose also helps conceal.

I’ve seen an explanation elsewhere for the balloon: memory wire. My thoughts were nichrome wire which heated the gas and made it rise, with extreme heat causing it to burst. Either way, the secret was in the wire, which clearly was a wire, not a string. Nice trick but messy wire.
@TokyoXtreme4 жыл бұрын
I believe the “string” is a cable that can stiffen and loosen based upon some hand control. When loosened, the balloon can rise; when stiffened, the balloon is restricted to a certain height, based upon the shortened length of cable. And I guess that when the cable is fully loosened and the balloon rises to maximum height, a mechanism pops the balloon.

Maybe the string had a hollow tube through which some kind of air or gas could be pumped from somewhere inside his rather awkwardly fitting jacket... or maybe the string carries an electric or static or heat element to the balloon.A sudden increase in delivery of this mechanism for raising the balloon could burst it, but so could a small fishhook at the end of the string and hidden inside the balloon.I seem to remember seeing something like this in a book somewhere, where a quick tug on the string makes the sharp hook pull against the inside of the balloon and burst it.Another thought I had was that the string could be a high tech design of sections of the string becoming more taut as if you had microscopic beads like small cotton reels with string through their holes which when pulled gradually tightens up the string- remember those funny wands that you had to hold pulled tightly together and then it would collapse when you said to a volunteer "here, hold this for me for a moment please" and when they gave it back to you you pulled on the string strung through the length of the wand. and the wand would go taut and appear normal again as everyone laughed.(either something like that, or some electrical high-tech switching is sent to the static sensitive balloon and thus heats it, or gives it some kind of static charge. Maybe the string wicks up water or oil or some fluid that makes the string heavier (dragging the balloon down) and then can somehow be sucked back out of the string into a reservoir somewhere in the magician's clothing , allowing the balloon to rise(it may have some helium in it and require a change of density or weight in the string to balance its relative buoyancy) ... nah! I've got nothing... it's witchcraft!
@keithgoodnight34634 жыл бұрын
1. Penn mentioned "dense," and neutral buoyancy; I think he was getting at Xavier doing something to change the density of the balloon, although in the end they couldn't figure out how. Did you ever see the children's toy with a water-filled plastic container and a "diving bell" inside? If you squeezed the container the diving bell would sink, if you let go it would rise. The trick was that the diving bell contained air, and was weighted to be close to neutral in the water. When you squeezed the bottle, water is incompressible so wouldn't change, but the air in the toy diving bell would compress, increasing its density enough to make the bell sink. I think Penn was hinting that Xavier had something similar going on-- but like Penn and Teller I have no idea how. 2. What am I missing about the "impossible" card? I won't describe how I think it was made, since evidently that's supposed to be a secret, but I'm not sure what's considered strange about it? 3. Aesop's fables weren't originally meant to be stories with morals; it was only centuries later that editors began adding morals to the stories. Aesop's original collection was meant as "useful anecdotes for speech writers." Some do indeed make a point or have a moral, but others are just jokes, sometimes based on puns in the ancient Greek that can't be translated. I think today you came across a fable that just doesn't want to be updated with a moral. It's proud to be a joke and stands by it.
@Malfehzan4 жыл бұрын
re 2. - Most people won't see the "twist" in the hypercard because a card could usually be bent in all ways, ripped in pieces, but its very shape makes it pretty much impossible to twist. Of course, cuts in just the right places change all that, but the asymmetry of the montage makes it not too obvious. -- It's not so great as a puzzle, especially if you haven't stapled it to some other (contrasting) card as a sort of base to limit reverse-engineering, but it makes for a GREAT ending to a Card Warp.
@KevinZimmerman3604 жыл бұрын
I think the fact that the balloon popped is very convenient for him since if there was some kind of heat-controlling device (which would make the air more/less dense, which is what Penn was referring to), it could have self-destructed and no one would be able to investigate it. Also, the balloon wasn't transparent which is another clue suggesting there may have been something inside of it.
@richross19744 жыл бұрын
Jason. the balloon trick is simple. watch his hand holding the string, the balloon works like a nurses blood pressure cuff. the string is a tube, his hand controls a valve that will allow helium to release from the balloon, just enough to let the balloon drop, without losing much size. he can then switch the valve to reverse the flow to fill it enough to raise the balloon from a cartridge in the handle.

He seems to be holding the red string close in hand after the magic trick is over 8:43 and the string looks kind of thick. Hot air rises and cool air sinks. The balloon seemed to be affected by the ambient studio air currents which caused some problems with the balloon wanting to be behind him so I don't think there was an assistant above. I wonder if you could make a small enough heating element to warm the air in the balloon to make it rise. I don't know how responsive the balloon would be to cooling on it's own so that it descends. I think there might be electrical wires in the sting. It would have been another thing if he blew up the balloon and tied it to a string and then did the trick.

Then i figured an easier method, just altering the buoyancy of the balloon. The string is a small tube, in his hand he has a small reservoir-balloon- filled with water. He squeezes, water flows in balloon, goes down. Release, pressure of balloon drives water back, balloon rises. Some confetti and small explosive added to disguise the gimmicks. At the end all water is out of the balloon avoiding a shower. He pulls on the string/tube pulling it out activating a trigger and confetti.

I think the string was a hose leading to a smaller baloon inside the larger baloon and a bulb of heavy gas in his hand lkeading to the smaller baloon. if he releases pressure the heavy gas transfers to the bulb in his hand and vice versa. @BoringDad884 жыл бұрын
I was thinking that too, but it seems like a tube would weigh it down, especially a heavygas. Helium and hydrogen are not able to lift much. Also, the amount of gas would have to have a delicate balance every single show. Maybe he put helium until it barely starts to lift, then uses a syringe to inflate/deflate? perhaps the string is a thin tube, and that Xavier has a BULB containing additional helium somewhere on his person, and the balloon has the right amount of helium such that a tiny amount of extra in or out can make it go up or down, and Xavier squeezes the bulb in to send it up, or releases the bulb to make it go down. this could be concealed anywhere on his person, eg, under his arm, or in his shoe etc.

Its a tiny battery & switch in hand (or switch only with battery in baloon) connected to very very thin wires going into baloon, slightly heating air inside baloon to make it rise. Finally full power applied to tiny heating element inside baloon to puncture and blow the baloon. This happens while diverting attention to kiss

they are actually two balloons: a smaller one containing XeF6 or CO2 and the big balloon containing helium at equilibrium. He just inflates and deflates the small XeF6 balloon inside and this is enough to change buoyancy. He could have a pouch in his hands (his left chest looks kind of weird) to squeeze the XeF6 (don't need a lot) and then unsqueeze for XeF6 to get back in the pouch and make the balloon lift.

My first thought is that it was a tube not a string and he had a device in his hand that could raise and lower the amount of helium in the balloon. Culminating in raising it so much that the balloon burst

I think the thick string is the key. There is a bottle of hydrogen involved with a valve and he inflates the ballon a bit more or a bit less to make it rise and fall.

I think there were strings, to keep the balloon down. The ballon stays vertical, even when it is on the floor, which suggests that it is lighter than air, like helium. What do you think?

If the balloon has neutral buoyancy (aka if balloon rubber, the balloon air, and balloon string weighs the same as the air around it) it would have neither a tendency to rise or fall thus making it tend to float at a constant altitude. If it had slightly negative buoyancy, it would slowly fall. If it had slightly positive buoyancy it would slowly rise. It it had a small electrical circuit that could warm the air slightly inside, it could go from slightly negative buoyancy to slightly positive buoyancy. If tiny heater was left on long enough, it could pop the balloon even.

The sting isn’t solid. There is another balloon between his legs. The helium is there when he relaxes, when he tenses it forces it into the balloon and it rises.

Maybe but he does not seem to be opening and closing his legs that much maybe it has something to do with him turning right or left which he does do a bit more

I think the rising comes from a bladder along his arm. He keeps his arm down until it's time to rise - I guess lifting his arm creates a path for extra hellium to get to the balloon. Then at end you can see him fold his arm up to squeeze the bladder to pop the balloon. I don't know how getting the balloon to fall works though.. His left arm is out of shot too much to really see what's happening.

How about the pop?
@DominoMarama4 жыл бұрын
Afterthought: Probably all done by pressure on the arm bladder, squeeze to rise, release to fall.. Just has pressure spot on so bladder reinflates allowing balloon to fall when not squeezed.

I'm convinced that the string was key to the performance. I have some theories: - The string is actually a hose and the performer is able to pump helium in and out of the balloon with a hidden device. - The string is used as a heat conductor (metallic core, perhaps). The performer can use a hidden device to increase the temperature of the air inside the ballon (it would be difficult to make it come down, but perhaps doable). This could also explain the final burst part. - The string is used as an electric conductor, allowing the balloon AND the performer to exchange electric charges. A hidden Van de Graaff generator could be employed to pump the charges in and out. Also, he might be using the act of taking hands with Alison to get "grounded" and close a circuit, but the type of shoes she's wearing has to be taken into account. It could also be a system that is affected by the total impedance (like touch-sensitive lamps).

Those are great explanations for how the trick may have been done. The reason I don't think it's the string is because that would be the obvious choice. This guy is known for being pretty innovative. I think he wanted them to focus on the string but did the trick another way. If it is the string, then Your 3rd explanations looks really good (Van de Graaff generator, circuits/grounding). #2 is good because it explains the bursting of the balloon. Can't wait to find out how it's done.

Best WiFi name is "Error" ....fun with IT people. The way he rolled up the "string" he may have used a gas cannister, with helium he could inflate and release air from the baloon. You wouldnt need much to raise and lower the baloon.

There's a second balloon inside the balloon. He's pumping helium into and out of it through the string, which is actually a very thin pipe.
@attentionaddicts3 жыл бұрын
At 6:30 you can see the string is very thick.

The controls to pump helium in, let it out, and pop the balloon are the hand holding the string. He definitely tries to pocket it by turning his right side away at the end.
@singleasasin4 жыл бұрын
08:00 Regarding the balloon, maybe the string is NOT a string, and, maybe he has, on his back, a small cillinder of helium and another one of ... whatever makes the helium disappear and the balloon go down. He might have a buton to push in his hand.
