In this episode of Dialing In... I take a look at the new Pod Go device and discuss how the Pod Go Edit software works and also create a Template preset so you can just load up and change your amp and cab and be off to the races to create a great tone. If you would like to grab the Template presets, they are up on CustomTone here:

FWIW - being new to Line 6 and having to quickly get a feel for the various amps, cabs etc - I created a basic template but added a mono looper as the very first item on the input. That way, I can quickly record and loop some chords, picking or whatever playing style will suit my target sound and then leave it looping as I play with the various settings on the main elements of a sound. I find it lets me concentrate on the sound rather than the values of the settings. Once I've got my basic sound, I move or remove the looper.

Adding the LA Comp at the end of the signal chain is a complete game changer for me. The difference is just night and day. So much to learn in migrating from amp/pedals to digital. Thanks for a super useful video

I just bought one, and I thought it was crap but then I realized you actually have to put in the time and effort to create your own block profiles to find your sound. So it does take a lot of time in order to know all the combinations. But once you learned all that is needed, this thing has everything.

Fantastic video! I'd just like to thank you for all the content you've put time and work into. Getting into the modeling world is so much easier with fine folks like you sharing the knowledge they have with others. I'm taking everything I'm learning from you to the POD GO so I really appreciate videos dedicated to the little unit and hope there's more in the future! Thanks again Jason.

After trying the packI I'm so glad I bought this. I'm a pro musician for 50 years. I went to a Helix special event years ago at an amp show. It was the coolest thing I'd ever seen. But as a pro, money's tight. And $1500 was just too much for me. It was worth it, I didn't have the dough. I hoped this day would come. It has, and I'm pleased to have a simpler version. If you bought every amp and pedal in popular use, and had them delivered. What do you do next? Jason gives you a free starting template, My experience was much better after watching this video. You'll want to buy some "packs" even if just to see how pro's set up their gear. This little unit is amazing, and Jason seems like a good dude.

Great tutorial! I use a stomp live on a small pedalboard with a dual footswitch. My live signal chain in the stomp is Drive>Boost>Placater>Trem>Delay>Verb>EQ>Cab Wondering if i could achieve the same basic live rig in the pod but without needing a dual switch or even a pedalboard for that matter.. I love the idea of an all in one for taking to gigs!

Great Video Jason, thank you! Templates are a great way to save time when setting up an MFX unit and I've set my Vox Tonelab SE up like that (albeit an older less sophisticated unit) for years. A very important issue for me is how the Pod Go sounds with headphones. Some other MFX I have (Vox, Zoom) don't sound that good and can sound dull and lack-lustre and even distort with headphones. I have a good set of audio-technica ATH M50x headphones - does Pod Go still sound really good through headphones and allow decent volume settings (some units tend to treat you like a child and 'cap' the headphone volume at a ridiculously low level)?

I just got one for a customer and i don’t believe you can since its “limitations” that keep everything within specs. We all are probably under-loading them with the effects available. I haven’t tried any IR’s yet and not sure those will make a difference but i doubt it. One last I’ve found is when you’re using the edit software and keep saving quick you may experience a very small lag/delay in becoming saved to the pod itself and available but that can be the laptop interface 3.0 or the USB 2.0 cable I’m using.

Havent got this unit yet, but i hope to soon. Your video has given me a useful heads-up before I get one and start figuring it out. I will be upgrading from a fairly ancient Pod XT which after years of service, has just about seen its day! I couldt justify the price of a Helix - especially ith all gigs gone for now, but this unit seems to have landed at my price point. really useful info as always Thanks Jason. One question to anyone here who has one - a few Helix LT owners mentioned to me that they had issues with the reliability of the expression pedal - not an issue with the standard Helix itself. Do you find the exp pedal on the Go to be fairly sturdy and reliable?

I grew up kinda poor, so i was never able to afford tube amps, and fancy pedals. Always just had to settle for lower end digital gear. But, leave it to Line 6 to come out with an affordable solution for us not so fortunate average Joe's. They really came through with this new Pod! Now the question is, do i keep the HD500X to combine with this beast?
@sjsphotog
@sjsphotog 4 жыл бұрын
agree this is really going to help the younger / hobbyists/bedroom players and those on a very limited budget. Once they use this for a few years and get good on guitar they will upgrade to the LT and then if they get really good and start playing gigs they will get a full Helix floor. Great marketing to have 3 price points and also the simple and non-scary UI is very appealing. No need to have those new to L6 or Helix get turned off by ALL the advanced editing features in the full Helix. Most basic/new guitar players just want to set it and GO start playing and not mess around. If it doesnt sound good in 5 mins and without a lot of tweaking its not going to sell/be used and then they wont want to play guitar. The key is get a decent / good tone and PLAY PLAY PLAY not EDIT EDIT EDIT :)

@@sjsphotog Helix and Helix LT are entirely different animals to Pod Go - sorry my friend but I completely disagree with your take that Pod Go is mainly for hobbyists/bedroom players on limited budgets who will learn on Pod Go and 'upgrade' to Helix/LT once they 'get good'. In fact, most folk who have bought Helix/LT are hobbyists/bedroom players or studio users and not gigging players and frankly there are more than a few out there who had more money than sense and spent their money on Helix/LT to end up just using a few basic tones because they simply can't cope with it. The reason I personally don't want the Line 6 Helix or LT, is because I don't want the size and weight, and I don't need or want to spend that type of money on something where I won't use at least 80% of what it can do. Helix LT is a superb unit but it's simply overkill for my needs and you can easily get option paralysis and spend your life tweaking rather than playing. I currently use a Vox Tonelab SE straight through the main board for gigging (I also have the TLLE) - still a great sounding unit with (thanks to the clever dummy load valve design) valve-like feel/tone/punch even though it's 'old tech' from 2004. But it's big and heavy and I need something light that's easy to use with great floor control, easy to set up & easy and tweak at a gig with. I need something with great sounding & more up to date amp, cab & fx models and Pod Go with its good floor control, umpteen amp, cab, fx models, import RI and snap shot facilities and balanced outs fits all of that. It may not have the processing power of the Helix/LT & be able to do 4 amps, umpteen fx at once, umpteen routing options etc but I simply don't need that. Pod Go is still giving me way, way more than the Tonelab SE or LE and as Jason rightly says in his video, the Pod Go limitations can actually be a positive thing to make you focus and as I've learned over the years from the sometimes less is actually more. And for the record I'm not an inexperienced bedroom player who's strapped for cash - I'm a gigging guitarist who plays a wide range of styles, and who's been playing for some 48 years and could easily afford an LT if I wanted one.

@richardbirch5744
@richardbirch5744 4 жыл бұрын
@@sjsphotog Sorry, that's absolute nonsense and demonstrates you've completely misunderstood the Pod Go market - Line 6 says " The POD® Go guitar processor gets you on the road to ultimate tone via its ultra-portable and lightweight design, simple plug-and-play interface, and best-in-class tones." Pod Go is specifically aimed at players who need Helix quality tones but in a portable easier to use stand-alone pedal for rehearsals and gigging - you don't need 'light weight portability' to sit at home and you certainly don't need the extended floor control designed specifically for gigging players with snapshots and stomp options, over and above Helix Stomp for home users - they've been more than happy with the three footswitch Helix Stomp as is. Helix Stomp is also aimed at players who want to expand their existing pedal board with a compact Helix quality module. Pod Go is for users who require Helix quality tones but in a more streamlined, portable simpler plug 'n go approach for rehearsals and gigging - people like me who want to get great gigging tones quickly, who need to tweak quickly on stage, to change tones quickly on stage, and who don't want to spend their lives trying to work out how to use and find their tone from a big, heavy complex unit where much of the detailed minutiae & complex routing nuances and two amps and two cabs etc that is so great for recording and you hear at home simply gets lost in a live mix on stage (unless you are with a serious pro-band with your own sound engineer). If you don't agree, I suggest you go on to the formal Line 6 forum and ask Line 6 themselves - I'm on that forum and I can assure you they'll be quite clear to you where Pod Go is aimed at. Of course, home users will want it to - but home users are also using Helix, Helix LT, Helix Stomp, and Helix effects, so that means nothing - in fact the vast majority of Helix and Helix LT customers are home players/home recording devotees and NOT gigging players - yet most home players are just using a few tones and features because that's all they need to get their favourite Marshall or Fender sound . All the forums like line 6, the Fretboard, The Gear Page etc will all evidence this - and I'm on all of them. I'm a gigging player and I can easily afford Helix LT or even Helix if I wanted these...but I don't want these because they are simply too big, too heavy, far too complicated, & too expensive for what I need - I wouldn't use 80% of what these things can do. So. I'm the typical Pod Go customer that Line 6 wants to win. Beginners? There are so many way cheaper and perfectly decent sounding options out there that fit that niche perfectly such as the Zoom G3n/G5n/G10n, G1 Four, Vox Stomplabs, Boss GT1, ME 50, 70, 80 etc etc. Most beginners really don't want to spend £400+ on a MFX - again, that fits exactly what you'll see on the forums.
@roadshowautosports

Richard Birch nice explanation and i believe Stephen wasn’t trying to insult anyone but we all got the point. I’m just starting on the MFX scene and agree that the pod go is super powerful just like older units were at the time but now an upgrade is welcome to keep up with so many options available to everyone. I’ve never held a helix in my hands but i own two GT-6’s and understand why pro giving musicians won’t be attracted to the big boys making pigs go a great option. I’m going to try combining the pod go on a pedal board with an ME-5 and an MS-3 so i can experience the MIDI features and parallel effects for fun and profit. It’s a project to try add some income during this time when my job isn’t paying even for my rent and i has no recourse but buying the units in my card and trying to use the cash for food until things get to a more normal situation. Thank you for your input.

@LTJR.
@LTJR. 3 жыл бұрын
With this one you can’t do 2 Amps in a patch, at the same time, like a Helix. You can move the effects loop wherever you want it and it does react differently where you put it. If you put it before the amp, reverbs and delays come out very big, probably bigger than you would like, although it’s a matter of taste, and you can tame that with the controls, the same as they would if they were Frontloaded and being hit by the preamp, then the power amp. If you move it after the amp it calms down like it normally would. Like I said you can put it anywhere even after the cabinet, and that can sound good also. I realize this is an old question but these are becoming popular and I imagine a lot of other folks are wondering the same things.

@LTJR. 3 жыл бұрын
I think they’re assuming a regular guitar amplifier, that already has a characteristic curve and it’s own cabinet and speaker. Running a cab Sim into a amp and cabinet can sound like a blanket over the speaker. But if you were running it into a plain power amp, or even your home stereo, You would probably want to run the cab sim or an IR. I think the amp out comes factory set globally with cab and IR defeated but I’m pretty sure you can turn it on if you like, or need.

A bit surprising that (at least) the L.A. Rack Compressor isn't stereo capable. Good pedals will be made great once pitch effects almost become stereo, allowing routing of clean and effected signal hard panned. Lots of other early firmware limitations that are hopefully "fixed" with updates.

There’s no output and when I try to increase the level it clips and fizzes. Very informative video. For the 99% of “ home “ guitarists who haven’t a clue about KHz idiosyncrasies , do yourself a favour and pick up a Pod 2.0 on eBay for diddly squat. You will find tones instantly that you will like and spend your time playing - not fiddling with PC Software. You only need 3-4 tones for any gig and l’ve been playing for 45 years. IMHO Line 6 got it pretty well right 1st time round

There's no shame for a guitar player to not know how to set up amps and signal chain. I've been playing for over 50 years. I can't set up amps to save my ass, my mind doesn't work that way. I've owned all the flavors of famous amps, and I have the ability to make them sound not very good. I do soundtracks, I need new sounds all the time. That's why the presets are great. They already sound great, more time to make money.
