Yeah, we learned to play in the harder way! 😄 I play bass guitar since 86, but lately I am trying to learn some songs on guitar too (most of them are from old Metallica's albums 🤘, just rhythms and arpeggios... Hammett's solos are too fast for me, apart from a couple more slow that I can do) and really I find useful videos like these and sites like Songsterr! Definetely, we should have had all of this back in the days of our youth (I am 50), but it is never too late! Thanks to Jason and to many others like him, who really are a huge help for those who wants to learn!😄 Greetings from Italy !

I'm a 60 year old drummer and been playing for over 40+ years and I was in a car wreck that took 70% use of my right arm due to nerve damage. That's what every musician fears, and I had to retire my drum career...after not playing for almost 8 years I realized my arm worked just enough and I could hold a pick, I bought a Jackson guitar and an amp and have been teaching myself to shred guitar. As a 72 year old metal disciple and beginner guitarist, I think your video is the best metal tutor I’ve come across. So simply explained. I think all 6 techniques are great. I’ve tended to try playing 3 fretted string power chords, but I think the 2 note method is easier for me to master and gain speed, and the sound is still good. You’ve certainly inspired me to plug in my guitar and get riffing! Well done Jason.

It's been 3 years since I lost the chance to play guitar, now I'm back in the game. Watching these videos before my guitar is delivered and I'm already feeling great about everything. All the techniques I used to play. Riffs are awesome and I believe they are the hardest techniques because they require other techniques to be applied along as well, and also there are many more possibilities of playing riffs than picking or palm muting techniques. So it would be a good investment if we put our time on learning more riffs.

I had a guitar for a couple of weeks when I was 16 in 1994 and one shitty book that could have been titled "Hot Cross Buns and Other Cringey Songs to Make You Hate Music," and no instruction, no internet, and not even fuckin cable at my dad's house, so I gave it to my brother (the firstborn Golden Child) who lived with our mom in the suburbs and he got lessons, now he's a capable hippie campfire player and I spent most of my life thinking the music gene skipped me, till I watched my own teenage daughter teach herself to be metal as fuck on bass and then guitar (yay internet). I'm old now but I just started learning from KZbin videos a couple months ago and I'm learning SO FAST and having so much fun. I'm an elementary teacher now. The public school music curriculum hasn't evolved past Hot Cross Buns, and most of the music teachers are Boomers, so it's no wonder Music is no kid's favorite class 😢. I wish I had time to show students how easy and fun music can be when you just skip past all that cringey baby crap and learn what you're interested in. But NOOOOOOOO...teachers have no time for anything but farming data. I'm loving videos like this one that make learning easy and fun

I've been playing for a bit, and while I can kind of easily get through these techniques - it's really great to find a straightforward and enjoyable instructor to watch. I do go back and watch basic methods like this occasionally to listen to advice and discover bad habits I've developed by playing on my own. I hope that didn't sound too pompous ass. I really like your style of instruction. Great video.😀👍

Hello Jason, Rod here. I've been into guitars for years. Unfortunately most of my life has been a busy mess. My father had a 335 Gibson guitar when I was younger. And I always tried to pick it up when I could, but dad was a possessive, you know what!! As I have gotten older, I have had a few guitars but I was also an over worked truck driver so the guitars just collected dust mostly. These years I am 45 but my work load has went down so I have picked the guitar back up. I bought knock off SG which actually turned out to be a half decent guitar. I was looking around KZbin and found your video. It's going a little slow but I really enjoy your videos. May even get your lessons. Thank you sir for making some really cool how to videos. Hope to be shredding up my fretboard some day soon.

Dude, I'm glad to hear your workload has slowed down. I left my corporate job a couple of years ago for similar reasons. It sounds like you have more time to dedicate to guitar these days, and it's never to late to go all in on it! Keep pushing yourself a little more each day!

Now I am playing for two years, mastered a lot of techniques. I watched this video when I started playing guitar. It was inspiring me a lot. Now I came back to the roots because after watching thousands of videos I got lost. So coming back to the fundamentals I have to say THIS IS still one of the best videos I have ever seen about learning metal guitar. One thumb isn't enough 😁 Every technique for its self is not a big problem but I am still struggling with RIFFING (and creativity) - playing some tabs is nice but I want to learn how to improvise especially for metal. Is there a scale or a theoretical knowledge or do you just riffing, riffing, riffing like you said?
@jasonstallworth

Thank you and man, it's great to hear how much this video has helped you. Yeah, everything goes back to these fundamentals. They're the foundation for rhythms and riffs. I like power chords because they sound cool and are easy to play. One (out of other things) that I have trouble with is trying to come up with a melody playing individual notes vertically in the fretboard. First of all, your passion and enthusiasm for helping others learn to play metal is amazing. Also, the fact that you respond to all your comments is really quite admirable... like seriously. I did however wanted to clearify the difference between the galloping rhythm and triplets. Galloping is typically heard as an eighth note followed by two sixteenth notes. A prime example is Run To The Hills (basically the whole song past the intro) and several other Iron Maiden songs. Sometimes the term "reverse gallop" will be used to describe the opposite, two sixteenth notes followed by an eighth note. The second riff in Raining Blood utilizes this rhythm. Triplets are most commonly played by dividing a beat EVENLY into three notes. Lamb of God's Laid to Rest, Ruin, As The Palaces Burn, many others uses this rhythm. Each measure of music contains four groups of three notes, all played at a consistent pulse. Another example would be For Whom The Bell Tolls. In the chorus, the three palm muted open-E notes before each power chord are one group of eighth note triplets and the three power chords played under the lyrics "time marches" would be a group of quarter note triplets. Just a few suggestions for future videos: prepare your personal examples of techniques ahead of time so you don't run into the same problem that you did during you "riffing" section. Also, present examples of well-known songs like I did above.

I've been playing guitar (mostly acoustic) for 40 years. I still watch videos like this one for beginners because, hey you never know, maybe I missed something. I like metal so this was cool for me seeing these basic elements broken down into those things we typically hear in the genre. I've always played fifths as part of barre chords or power chords. Recently I've experimented with playing the fourth and the octave. Fifths are cool and powerful. But I'm learning that sometimes they're too much for a song. Fifths are better used sparingly in some songs and especially in other styles of music. Anyway, cool video. I'll definitely check out some of your other stuff.

I admit I searched for a long time to understand the technique of galloping, since a lot with Amon Amarth .. and there I come across you! Well explained, I just have to practice ... a lot and a lot and still a lot 😅 since I am a beginner and my baritone guitar only for 1 year. I also made the mistake of always picking down. I worked it hard, now it's ok but it's to a point that I do it without thinking when sometimes I have to, depending on the score, just do down picking, oddly it's a bit difficult that it takes me a while to think. If my English is not perfect, it's Google Translate to blame 🤷
@jasonstallworth
@jasonstallworth 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the comment, and your English is fine! For galloping, it helps to start very slow and allow yourself time to get the technique down. And I totally understand what you're saying...it does take a moment to shift your brain to do this!

Due to the marvel of KZbin's algorithm, your channel showed up on my home page today, and I love it. It could have done it when you actually made the video, but hey, maybe that is asking a little much.. I watch so many channels and great guitarists who play other stuff, which my fingers simply refuse to do. But I try learning it so I can play what you are playing, and that looks a lot easier than running the circle of fifths on the minor pentatonic blues scale. So.. I am going to try this and see if I can play a few riffs, since honestly, that is my entire ambition. I want to make a little noise, not headline a band. Let me clarify that. I want to do what you are doing in this video. I am obviously not familiar with your entire library yet. :) Thanks for this one.
