Hang on, when I do this, I'm finding that if you don't set the Spread to PNT (or 0) in each of the assigned tracks, they'll come out of all the speakers.

Awesome tutorial, there is a more convenient way to do this however that you should do an update tutorial on. If you check on the Dolby Atmos box in the settings and set your track to Dolby Atmos 5.1 or 7.1 and open the track properties in Fairlight you eliminate the need for multiple tracks. The single track is spilt into 5 or 7 tracks that you can control within the properties of the track itself, then you can check off the speakers you want. This helps your workflow and frees up a lot of space on your timeline. This way, if you have a big project with 50 audio tracks it won’t multiply it by 5 or 7.

Thanks! Great tutorial. You hit all the basics and a lot of them are tricky. I've been doing the Davinci tutorials, which are much more extended, and you did a great job of summarizing the critical information, especially about creating the busses and assigning the channels. I have a 5.1 system and I actually managed to creat an LFE track for your tutorial. First, I cut up your download and put the clips in their proper places on the other 5 channels and set up the panning. Then I copied all the clips onto the LFE track, selected the proper clip attributes and used the eq for the LFE track to emphasize the low frequencies and push down the higher ones. I pushed up the levels on some clips and left most of them alone. There's almost always low frequency information in a recording like this one; to create an LFE track you just have to filter it a bit and bring up the levels. Then, I turned on the LFE in the pan control for the LFE channel and cranked it up. Finally I used the LFE filter on the 5.1 bus to add a bit of control there and fiddled with the levels to make sure I didn't exceed -2.0 TP. Thanks again.

Hi Jason, thanks for the helpful video. After first try-out I only got stereo. Then discovered that you have to make some changes in the preferences/video and audio IO settings from the main Davinci Resolve menu. Speaker set up , monitor set format, this is default set to stereo. You have to set this to manual and select 5.1 and assign your computer speakers in the stem/output table below. Then restart Davinci and it works perfectly!

This brings up another question which I have not seen a clear answer to online, If working with both stereo and 5.1 formats in the project, how does one keep the workflow organized and how does one put the tracks correctly for both formats? Example - For dialogue, should it be on two tracks? (let's say one on Track 1 for stereo output and a copy of the same dialogue track on the center track of the 5.1? and for the foley, FX, music, ADR, does it need to be duplicated and placed on the appropriate tracks for both formats? So I don’t have any professional experience creating surroundsound etc. but I would say that vocals should always be on a stereo track. Each vocal in theory should be on its own separate stereo track. You can have multiple 5.1 surround sound channels if you need to for effects, etc. it does not necessarily need to be on both types of tracks, you can always export whichever master output you want, including more than one type. For example a 5.1 master and a stereo master track can both be exported in the same file.

@@JasonYadlovski Googling provides no answers. Both film and, well... "not film" have 6 channels in the same configuration. My guess is that 5.1 Film is just some metadata thing... no actual effect on the sound or its mapping. I've never mixed in Resolve/Fairlight before but I'm gonna attempt to learn it because my director edited everything in Resolve and OF COURSE Resolve sucks at exporting XMLs so that projects can be worked on in other apps.

Good old tutorial but after a lot of efforts of few days I got stuck at the Bus assign option, seems like version 18.6.6 has different way to do things so I don't see similar option as yours. Can you please make a new tutorial of mixing 5.1 surround in Resolve 18/19. Also add how to handle if our audio is already on multiple tracks & we want to have 2 of the audio tracks assigned to 5.1 center speaker, how to do that? as of now with tutorial I can only assign 1 track at a time. For Eg: I had already done my project sound in stereo with 5 different tracks having multiple audio (city traffic, car honking, people sound, foot steps etc) since these are now on separate track how to convert such audio to 5.1 where multiple sound are required to be played assigned to specific channel? Thanks! Honestly I haven't done much surround sound work, but as far as EQ, I'd just EQ it the same way I'd work with any other audio. Try and remove harsh frequencies and just clean it up. Unless there is a specific sound you are going for. Thanks for watching!

Jason, two questions (1) other videos that provide instructions in this reference the SETTINGS of Davinci (System > Video and Audio I/O) and setting monitor speaker configuration to 5.1. Do you know what the difference is between you doing it this way and doing it in the settings? Also, other videos reference changing the track type to 5.1 (not sure why or if that matters whereas you set yours to Mono). (2) Have you used plugins like Waves UM226 or NUGEN Halo Upmix? If so, do I need to follow your same instructions or does it handle all of the routing?

Thanks! A fixed bus is one that can only be used for one purpose - for example, an Aux, a Main or a Sub Mix. You have to select a bus that does what you want it to do. The new Flexible bus allows you to use a bus for anything - hence it's flexible. You're not locked into one thing with a particular kind of bus. Secondly, I need to know if there is a way to edit an individual channel within a track in Davinci? I'm currently using a video with a 6-channel audio (listed as 5.1 in DVR) and I only want the dialogue part of the audio. Currently, the audio is shown as one track with 6 channels. Hi! So I'm assuming you've got your audio clip already in one track that is a 5.1 surround sound track, right? If you go into the fairlight tab, then go to your 5.1 track, right click somewhere near the name of the track, you'll see an option to 'Convert to linked group' Choose that and it will separate your 6 'layers' (of the 5.1 track) into individual tracks. Then you should be able to edit the one that has your vocals in it. Hope this helps! If it's confusing, let me know. Thanks for watching!

Thanks Jason. This is a great tutorial. I recently got a short film I'd previously mixed in stereo into a film festival and must now make it 5.1. So this video is timely. Question. Stupid question. Originally, when I mixed my audio tracks, I had multiple tracks, like 9 for different characters, SFX, foley, etc. I'd like to have dialogue, foley, and fx coming through the center channel. I know how to use the pan tool to move those audio tracks to the center in a 5.1 mix. But, here's the stupid question, do I need to mix those three separate tracks into one track then assign the combined track as my center channel? Or, can I leave them as separate tracks and pan each of them individually to the center channel so they all come out of the same speaker. I need to deliver a 5.1 mix. But, not sure if me leaving them as separate tracks on my end will result in something being wonky on the DCP end???

You're welcome! I think panning them should work. Another option might be to work with the routing a little - maybe send all of the tracks to a bus and use that bus in the 5.1? Or maybe you can link all of the center channel tracks? It's been a little while since I've worked in 5.1 so I'd probably have to mess around with it for a little bit to see what works best.

Since it’s really just a stereo mix, you can use the pan feature to move it from the front speakers to the back speakers, I’d start there and see how it works out.

Watching this video in 2023 in 5.1 which YT now supports on a Chromecast with Google TV / Samsung TV / Onkyo decoder and there is basically no audio for your speech. (Only when you manually pan to left/right/center/rear.) I have to disable 5.1 surround in YT to hear you.

Hi! I'm not 100% sure what you are asking and I haven't used Premiere Pro, but maybe you're talking about using something like the Stereo Width effect? In the Fairlight page, add the effect to your track, it's under Imaging, then Stereo Width. Or maybe you are looking for something like those offered in under Modulation effects. Just discovered 2 easy ways to add an LFE without having a dedicated track: 1. Turn on the LFE in any of the channels you want to generate the effect. Set appropriate volume levels for the effect. Then add the LFE filter to your 5.1 buss. The LFE buss filter gives you control over the effect globally. 2. Create an LFE buss, then send each of the channels to that buss and route that buss to the 5.1 buss. Add EQ to the LFE buss that acts like a low pass filter. Then add the LFE filter. But in essence this is a bit redundant: the other channels with automatically route to the 5.1 buss as long as you have the LFE turned on in their pan settings as in method #1. In either case, you can use the channel controls to automate the boom (LFE) levels any individual channel, which in effect, gives you the ability to turn it on and off as well. You can have a dedicated LFE channel if you need it, or if it makes the sound design easier for you to understand. It also makes it possible to add fx, eq, etc. to individual sound clips. Even if you leave it empty, it's probably a good idea to have an LFE channel, just to keep things clear about your 5.1 layout. Otherwise you can't use the group/ungroup track to quickly assign pans. Your tutorial really made me think about this. Thanks.

I've been really struggling to get 5.1 to work as I expect it too. It's easy enough for the mono dialogue to be played on the center track and be faded to FL/FR via automation or the pan controls. However, I could never figure out how to make my also mono SFX not appear on the center speaker and only on FL/FR or RL/RR. If panned to the front, it will also always come out of the center. Do you happen to know how to fix this?

Hey! You can set up some busses - SFX, MUSIC and DIALOGUE, that might help with being able to do it.

@brown2840 yes, a bus is like a track, just remember to send your individual tracks to the bus only and then send the bus to your main output. On your individual tracks you need to remove the Bus1 so you’re not double sending the tracks. So the buses are what would get sent to the main output. When watching this video on my 5.1/7.1 channel setup, I can't hear you talk until you are sending to one discreet channel. For example, during your intro and initial speech, I don't hear a thing. When you start mentioning only hearing from center or panning to left/right, I hear where it's supposed to be. Then after that, nothing again. What is going on? I really want to watch and hear this lol.

I know that KZbin does not support 5.1 surround sound, I’m not sure why you would hear things from certain speakers but not others. As far as I know KZbin only puts the videos out in stereo. Maybe because the original file panned two different speakers which didn’t come through in the stereo set up of KZbin.

I use DaVinci Resolve 18.5 Studio. I have shot a film that consists of 16 different scenes. I have created a timeline for each scene. The individual scenes are in 5.1 format. I also created a master timeline that contains the 16 individual timelines. This master timeline should also be exported in 5.1 format at the end. Now the problem: While the individual scenes still have a 5.1 structure, the master timeline has only created a stereo track from each timeline. I would like the master timeline to also have a 5.1 structure (L,R,C,LFE,RL,RR) where I can still control each individual track. What settings do I need to make?

One final thing, I used an import tool to import an mp4 file and it made 2 tracks, a video track and a composite of the 5.1 channels all into one. To view them all I had to right click and select 'Convert to linked group'. Then after much grief, I didn't know I could unlink them. Finally, there's a 'Bus' instead of Main. I that semantics for ver. 7?

You only show half (the most important thing is to hear it in the studio if you have 6 speakers. For example, how do you connect your 6 lines to an audio interface (for example the "focusrite 18i20") in Windows . The idea is that you test it first before publishing it.

If it's all in 1 track, you won't be able to separate it in DaVinci....At least not that I know of. You'll need something more advanced like Izotope.

Kinda strange. I can only hear about half of what you're saying, when listening on my 5.1 surround sound system. All other SS videos, and SS tests play fine... I know you do awesome videos, so just curious why that might be?

Hey Jason, I have a problem with geting the surround main to work. When I try to activate it in the control room drop down like you do at 20:38 it does change to the Main that I want but it's still only stereo and not 5.1 even though I did select a 5.1 main. This is really frustrating me and I hope you can helpme. Great video though.

I'm telling you, without your excellent videos I would throw DaVinci in the garbage! not because its bad. But the logic to it makes little sense to me. ANYWAY, I wanted to let you (and others) know that in order for me to get this working. If the video has and is edited in 5.1 , there would be an option to turn on 5.1 (provided you have a 5.1 sound system hooked up) Even the receiver of your surround sound will display the audio source as something else other than stereo

As a beginner this is teaching some seriously flawed fundamentals. Tracks are generally not organized like this when editing. Best practice is to track out by contents like Dialogue, Music and FX. Then just pan those tracks to left/right and surrounds in the panner. Mapping out each track like this this early is a really restricting method and I think could really hurt a beginner trying to learn the skill set here.

I know this is an old video but if you’re still around, I would like to know how to do this. After watching this video, that was pretty much the first thing that crossed my mind. I have a bunch of different tracks, all designated for certain sounds-dialogue (x2), some foley, effects, a bunch of sound design tracks, the score, room tone, etc. And cramming them into just five or six separate tracks means I would have to make a bunch of compound clips or something. So, when panning the sound, is it as simple as moving that little dot around to your taste? And after that, to make it ACTUAL 5.1, can I still follow the steps he did toward the end?

Interesting, another thing to keep in mind is that KZbin does not support 5.1 surround sound, at least it didn’t when I was making this video. So the audio will likely only be stereo. I didn’t realize that until after I started making this video.

At time 2:30 where you say "I'm assuming it would appear here" Well it does but when I goto: Manual / Main / Vizio (NV...tion audio) / 5.1 Then under outputs it only allows me to st 2 outputs not all 6. even when I set outputs to the left and Right surround out puts it still comes out the front and center speakers/ That's been fixed some how don't why or how. I get all 6 channels to assign to. Even the 5.1 surround sound you made for down load doesn't work any idea why. Wish I could attach a screen shot to these comments.
