My dad was born in 67, he was a quiet guy from Dayton, he became a structural engineer and moved to chicago, but he died in 2015 when he was 48. i was 17, and I hadn't really gotten to know him that well yet, but i know hes in me and still watching over me. One of the bands that created, or supposedly created, the alt-rock sound - they were rock.. but also weren't. Though you could say the same of a bunch of 80's bands, Pixies being the most influential but there was also My Bloody Valentine, The Flaming Lips, Dinosaur Jr, The Wipers, alt rock is a very loose, umbrella-like label.

It's nice to see a lot of the younger generation getting into this music. It's very hard to explain how hard it is to listen to this music after all these years. When you lived in those days as a young person who was questioning everything in life, didn't know what career you wanted to go into, had parents that were breaking up at alarming rates more than any other generation before, thought you were going to rule the world someday...when you lived those days look back now, the ache in your heart sits there and mocks the fact that you are now in your fifties. Then there are days when you listen and you're sixteen again and free of all the shit you know.

I sat talking with him on the front steps of the venue before a Husker Du gig in Montreal in 1985 and watched as he dug into his pockets to give money to kids who were trying to collect enough cash to get into the very show he would be headlining in a couple of hours. +bderouen1964 from about 1981 through 1989. Their last record was on a major label, Warner Brothers, and they did have a video or two on MTV, but they broke up not long after this. They were an underground band, their record label was called SST Records. Wikipedia SST and you will learn a lot about many other great bands you never heard of. Its all on the Internet now. You certainly heard of Henry Rollins? He got his start in a band on SST called Black Flag. It was a whole, thriving underground culture of kids making magazines for each other, promoting shows, making records, and communicating via the mail. Usually you'd learn about it from another kid that knew after you decided to check out Punk and you bought the Sex Pistols record or some Clash records. Then you realized Hardcore was where it was at and was very different than that British stuff from the '70s. The scene as it was then - the scene is dead.
