Switzerland requested considerable strengthening of the airframe mainly for maneuvering/handling inside bunkers. This requirement allowed the aircraft to be hocked to a crane assembly for easier handling in confined spaces (bunkers). This resulted in a more robust aircraft (like the one suited for catapult take-offs on carriers, not that Switzerland intended to use its Mirage IIIS that way off course) but it allowed JATO starts and thus STO (short take off) procedures ideal for an intercept on short notice followed by fast climbing with a full weapons load. Another notable change was the addition of a canards (the small winglets above the intake), a feature that would re-emerge later with the Dassault Rafale (as well as the Gripen and Typhoon) albeit fixed in the Mirage IIIS.
