Stumbled across some old photos so decided to dig to see where this ship is now and came across this video. I worked on this ship when she was Seacat Rapide. Honestly I much preferred Seacat Scotland(Incat 74 fast cat). This used to be an unreliable tub of a thing and she had a couple of attempts at killing me which I didn't much like 😂 When she did run properly though she was solid. Easily made her operational speed of 35knts. These ships at reduced speed just seem like they just want to be let off the leash so to speak. They hate going slow and really hate trying to back up. Flat out is where they're happiest. Looks like they did a complete rebuild on the stern too. SOLAS boats are in the same position but I don't think the cranes for them are and there used to be 2 ramps for the vehicle deck. Makes sense, she never needed 2 ramps. From what I dug up she had a massive refit at some point for machinery so hopefully they finally resolved the reliability. She used to be a bit of a pig and that only got worse after a massive engine room fire gutted port side engine room(which was attempt number 2 at killing me) As much as I hated this ship when I worked on her, lots of fond memories from my time on her and I'm glad to see she's still plodding along somewhere 😊

@@glangsaprick bloody good ships as well. Incat 74 Hover Speed GB was Blue Riband holder for a number of years and I was part of the crew that took Seacat Scotland light ship from Belfast to Dover to hand her over. We got caught in a massive storm off the coast of Wales. We came out it with some bumps n bruises but the ship came through without a scratch. There were massive container ships and tankers that made us look like a tonka toy out in the same crap and they got the utter snot kicked out of them. A lot of injuries and damage that night. The ship in this video is an Incat 81 and was Seacat Rapide when I worked on her

Hmmm... just to break the admirers' chorus, this doesn't look like a well designed ship. No smoke stack, exhaust fumes blown at waterline level can enter the ship, and those air conditioning external units look like an afterthought. I don't suppose a ride on this ship is very pleasant. Epic video btw.

So as someone that did 2 and a half seasons on this exact ship in the Irish sea when she was Seacat rapide I can tell you there were 3 main problems with her. 1: she was plagued with engine problems that got even more random after her port side engine rebuild after a fire. 2: on the vehicle deck to the bow there's a section we called the helter skelter. It's quite a tight turn up onto a small upper deck in the bow for some of the cars and being a ramp it was common for a stench of clutch burn to come up into the cabin. The extractor fans weren't that good up in the bow either. 3: you're bang on about the fumes from the stern. In certain weather at reduced speed the fumes are blown back onto the stern and in the aft doors(aft obs deck into cabin). When she's up to speed though is when the design makes sense. At 35knts there's a lot of turbulent air at the stern. A traditional smoke stack on top would have the fumes blown straight down over both upper and lower aft decks. That turbulent air also blows back into the cabin doors out onto those decks. Bel-Troon was 2 and a half hour crossing. 15 mins reduced speed out of Belfast, 2 hours running at speed then 10-15mins reduced speed into Troon so majority of the time is spent at speed. Your point on the aircon is spot on to. Looks like quite a few more have been bolted on since I was on her. Makes sense considering the climates she serves now though. In her early 2000's config I wouldn't be too keen being on her where she is now 😂

@MoA-Reload...2 жыл бұрын
At 35knts you might not think so though. It'd be like clinging onto the bonnet of your car at 60+kph. The forward mooring stations were a favourite spot for crew smoke breaks... Not when it's bouncy though. Gets a bit wet 😂
